Solo AltitudeNew York brand, Solo, got in touch about their laptop bags recently. So, I have been living with one of their Altitude rucksacks from the Black Ops range for the past couple of months.

Having a few jobs means that I have to be mobile. In London, mobility means public transport or walking, for the most part. This all adds up to me and my kit having to get around easily. Sometimes I just need a notebook and a laptop. Other times, I also need camera kit including tripods, and the like.

I am reliant on a good bag. I have tried messenger bags but, over a certain weight, putting all that on one side soon irks my old back. It is generally rucksacks, or backpacks, that offer the most comfort and space.

The Black Ops Altitude backpack certainly looked to tick all the boxes.

Solo Altitude design

solo altitude frontAccording to Solo, the Altitude backpack is designed for “every adventure” and its construction seems to verify this.

What you get is a bag made from parachute nylon, so it is lightweight and durable. Additionally, the rucksack features some rather unique, and cool-looking, hardware that is “inspired by aviators”. I am assuming that this refers to chunky zippers and metal clasps as well as the military-grade Velcro. The latter enables you to affix the included ‘New York’ patch, for a start.

On the front is a rather natty metal Solo logo. The webbing that runs along the front could be used for hanging items from. There are also compression straps to alter the depth of the bag.

solo altitude laptop sectionThe rear, padded laptop compartment can accommodate a laptop up to 17.3-inches. Here there is also a separate section for tablets and a mesh pocket facing them for odds and ends. Between those is quite a large area that will happily swallow A4 notebooks.

solo altitude front mainThe front zippered section boasts two smaller organiser pockets as well as a large storage section. Additionally, this part has a handy key clasp.

solo altitude front pocketsFinally, rounding off the main sections, there are two further zipped pockets on the very front. The top one is ideal for business card holder, door pass cards, keys, etc. The lower one is larger than the one above and, again, contains organiser pockets, the larger of which holds a glasses case perfectly.

Even more pockets

That’s the main event covered but that still leaves the sides.

solo altitide rightOn one side you will find four levels of small pockets. The lower two are sectioned off. I find the third level the right depth for pens. Here you will also see one of the discrete Solo logos as well as one of the compression straps.

solo altitude leftThe other side has an extendable pouch which is perfect for bottles, flasks or umbrellas. Again, there is another compression strap.

Comfort

solo altitude backThe back of the pack is well padded.

Furthermore, the padded section is secured at the edges which enables the bag to slip over rolling luggage handles.

solo altitude luggageThe straps are also well padded and feature d-rings for attaching things via carabiners. Lastly, there is a waist strap that fastens across your body to aid comfort and security. Great for cyclists as well as walkers.

The bag measures 18.50 x 12.6 x 4.92 inches, which is well under the requirements for airline carry-on luggage.

Although constructed from lightweight nylon, it still manages to tip the scales at 2.2 pounds when empty. This will be mostly due to the quality heavy-duty fasteners and padding.

Solo Altitude performance

solo altitude reviewI have had this bag packed full. The main compartment’s laptop area cossets your computer with 1/4-inch thick padding. This has looked after my Lenovo Yoga II Pro as well as a HP Envy X2 without issue. The tablet section has been home to my Nvidia Shield; again with plenty of room to spare.

The main section between the device pockets and mesh pocket gobbles up 12-inch records still in their card mailers easily. As I get most of my LPs delivered to my office address, this is more handy than you’d think. For those of you that do not have a vinyl addiction, this section has also proved handy for product catalogues and full-sized notebooks.

solo altitude packI have actually used the front section to pack my DSLR in its case. That’s as well as cabling and my headphones.

The Solo Altitude has proven itself good as a weekend bag too. The large main areas easily accommodating clothes and a change of footwear.

Let’s not forget how it looks. This really won me over. I love the discrete branding as well as the metal details and stealthy look. The top carrying handle is a must as I refuse to wear a pack on my pack on the train – nobody needs to wear their pack on a train! – so being able to easily hold my bag in those situations is a good thing.

Solo Altitude backpack review conclusion

There isn’t an area that disappoints with the Solo Altitude. It has done well in all weathers and my belongs have remained dry in deluges.

I actually like the yellow lining and the whole thing is well put together. The last two months have seen it in constant use and there are no visible signs of wear.

Furthermore, it stores everything that I have tried it with: laptops, show catalogues, notebooks, tablets, cameras, tripods, food containers, clothes, and LPs. It is surprising just how much this can carry – the only limit will be your back.

Capacious, comfortable, cool – I can thoroughly recommend the Solo Altitude backpack.

Price and availability

You can buy the Solo Altitude backpack right now from Amazon for £48.93.

cf-sv7

CF-SV7Panasonic has introduced a new addition to their range of laptops with the unique-looking Let’s Note CF-SV7.

The new Panasonic Let’s Note CF-SV7-series notebooks are the only ultra-compact PCs to feature Intel’s latest mobile processors. It also bucks the trend seen on Apple and co and boasts 7 ports plus an SD card reader.

The 12.1-inch CF-SV7 features Intel’s quad-core 8th Generation Core i5 and i7 processors. Oh, it also packs an optical disc drive. Now, how many companies offer ultra-light laptops with a disc spinner these days?

Panasonic CF-SV7

cf-sv7As well as the options of Intel Core i5-8250U or Core i7-8650U processors, you get up to 16GB of LPDDR3 memory. Storage can run up to 512GB of SATA SSD and up to 1TB of PCIe SSD.

The screen is a 12.1-inch WUXGA (1920×1200) display. Stamina is up to 21 hours thanks to the hefty long-life battery.

cf-sv7All of this is in a case that measures 11.2 x 8 x 1-inches. The CF-SV7 tips the scales at no more than 1.124 kilograms, even when equipped with a high-capacity “L” battery.

However, it’s the range of connectivity that impressed me.

Plenty ports

panasonic cf-sv7This ultra-compact offers a Thunderbolt USB Type-C port, 3 x USB 3.0 Type-A ports, HDMI, Ethernet, VGA, 3.5mm audio jacks and a handy SD card reader.

Furthermore, there’s wireless connectivity support for both 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1.

Finally, Panasonic is also offering optional 4G LTE connectivity with speeds of 300Mbps down and 50Mbps up.

I’ve not seen anything like it

panasonic cf-sv7You might be looking at this laptop thinking, “that’s unlike any other ultra-light lappy I’ve seen” and you’d be right.

Firstly, these devices are very light because they are made of plastic. Don’t worry though, they’re still hardy enough to withstand a drop from a height of 76 cm.

Even though they weigh under a kilogram, they’re not ultra-thin like modern notebooks from the likes of Apple, HP or Lenovo.

Some may even say that the CF-SV7 is a little chunky. But, they are designed to offer their owners the best possible connectivity, feature set and battery life, something that we usually see on 14-inch+ laptops from other manufacturers.

Market-driven

In Europe and the U.S. most go for ultra-thin PCs even if they lack replaceable batteries or certain ports. You see, preferences are different in Japan. This is who Panasonic is aiming the CF-SV7 at. This market really digs its 12-inch laptops with optical drives. Users also demand thick replaceable batteries and plenty of connectors.

For more information on the Panasonic Let’s Note CF-SV7 laptop jump over to the official website by following the link below. Panasonic has not announced any worldwide availability for the Let’s Note CF-SV7 as yet In the system may not even make it out of Japan.

Price and availability

The Panasonic CF-SV7 will be available to purchase throughout Japan with prices starting from $2,300 rising to nearly $4,000 for the flagship system.

No word if it will see a global release as yet.

moto z2 playThe new Motorola Moto Z2 Play is now available online at Vodafone UK. This new phone not only looks good value but it’s also modular.

LG did have a decent stab at creating a modular phone, but Motorola looks like they might have got it right.

The Motorola Moto Z2 Play comes packing a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

The main 12MP dual LED camera boasts phase detection and laser autofocus. This should translate to amazing photos in any light.

Moto Mods

That gamepad is pretty nifty as I had a quick play of the Sega classic, Sonic the Hedgehog. I have the 360 camera and JBL speaker to also test.

There is also word of a wireless charging case, booster battery pack, Hasselblad camera and Polaroid mods. All these simply snap right on the back!

All the Moto Mods are purchased separately, apart from the JBL SoundBoost 2 Speaker which will be bundled free with the phone.

Windows 10 Mixed Reality Headset

Samsung HMD OdysseyMicrosoft has announced that pre-orders are now open for their new mixed reality headsets, including the Samsung HMD Odyssey.

Microsoft has been busy putting its mixed reality concept through its paces since early 2015 and the HoloLens reveal.

Over two years later, and a hook-up with Samsung, they may have a product that you might buy. Moreover, a headset that you can actually afford.

Samsung HMD Odyssey

samsung hmd odyssey headsetOn October 3rd, Microsoft revealed the Samsung HMD Odyssey at an event covering its Windows Mixed Reality platform and the Window 10 Fall Creators Update.

The new headset looks a lot like others, such as the HTC Vive, and Facebook’s Oculus Rift but, according to Microsoft, it’s easier to use.

Additionally, Microsoft states that it also has a few other big advantages too.

Power

The Samsung HMD Odyssey works with any computer running the Window 10 Falls Creators Update. This software update will be released on October 17th.

That appears to be the only real requirement. This is a lot different to the Vives, Rifts, etc that need a puter with plenty of poke.

Samsung’s headset boasts dual AMOLED screens pushing out a higher resolution than either of those headsets too.

Furthermore, Microsoft says it only takes minutes to set up, whereas the Vive and Rift can take an hour plus to install.

The HMD Odyssey also features built-in camera. This enables you to walk around in virtual reality without setting up a bunch of cameras in the room first.

Finally, there’s the built-in AKG headphones and a microphone so you can talk to Microsoft’s AI assistant Cortana.

New software and apps

As with all tech these days, you need that killer app to make people get aboard.

It appears that Microsoft may have a solution for that, too.

As of October 17th, Windows Mixed Reality will offer 20,000 apps through the Microsoft Store. I will just let that sink in for a second.

Gaming

You will get popular titles such as; Minecraft, Fantastic Contraption, Superhot and a brand new mixed reality Halo experience called Halo Recruit. By the sounds of things the latter is pretty much just a demo.

Microsoft is also working with gaming giant Valve to add support for SteamVR, its library of virtual reality games.

I am nit currently able to say when this will be happening. However, what I can say is that there should be some sort of preview available later this year.

Other Windows headsets

Windows 10 Mixed Reality HeadsetIf you cannot wait until November and the Samsung kit, further headsets were also announced at the event.

These will all be available with the software, on October 17th.

Acer Windows Mixed Reality headset

Acer Windows MR headsetAcer will offer their Windows Mixed Reality Headset with motion controllers.

Once the headset is paired with the controllers, you can take advantage of the full position and rotational tracking in the headset to easily create content or play games.

Dell Visor Windows Mixed Reality headset

Dell VisorThe Dell Visor features high resolution 1440 x 1440 LCD panels for a sharp and smooth 360° panoramic experience.

It’s thoughtfully engineered for comfort and convenience with well-cushioned head and face padding that allow for comfortable wear, even for people who wear glasses.

HP Windows Mixed Reality headset

HP Windows MR headsetThe HP Windows Mixed Reality headset will also be bundled with motion controllers to provide great Mixed Reality experiences.

Lenovo Explorer Windows Mixed Reality headset

Lenovo ExplorerThe Lenovo Explorer headset is ergonomically designed and optimised for comfort so you can immerse yourself in mixed reality experiences for long periods.

It tracks your movements with superior fidelity and spatial awareness so you can move around naturally in an area of 3.5 by 3.5 meters (about 11.5 by 11.5 feet) without constantly reorienting yourself.

Price and availability

All the headsets are available to pre-order now.

The Samsung HMD Odyssey will be released on November 6th, whilst the others will be available on October 17th.

Prices

  • Samsung HMD Odyssey – $499
  • Lenovo Explorer – $399
  • HP Windows MR Headset – $449
  • Dell Visor – $449
  • Acer Windows MR Headset – $399

google pixel 2I fell back in love with HTC’s hardware back with the One M8. It seems that Google loves it too, to the tune of $1.1 billion.

HTC has announced that its “Powered by HTC” R&D division, those behind Google’s Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones, will be bought by Google for $1.1 billion.

This is seemingly part of the search giant’s new hardware strategy. Remember when it acquired then seperated from Motorola?

According to HTC’s CFO Peter Shen, this will mean about half of the 4,000 people in his company’s R&D team will be joining Google. That’s quite a migration.

However, Shen did say that that HTC will continue developing its own range of smartphones, including its next flagship product.

Agreement

The agreement also grants Google a non-exclusive license for a large part of HTC’s intellectual property. The deal is expected to be approved and closed by early 2018.

google-pixel-2-xlThe Taiwanese company has focused increasingly on its emerging VR business, which includes the awesome HTC Vive headset. Additionally, it still cobbles its own smartphones too. Most recently, the U11 has received much praise.

Google HTC deal

The deal between Google and HTC will see the latter company retain its branding, but Google will take over some of its hardware engineering resources. This should help it own even more of its device-making process.

Google had stepped back from in-house hardware after selling its Motorola unit to Lenovo. However, it has recently re-engaged on that front with a different approach focused on premium smartphones, as well as accessories and smart home and connectivity devices like Google WiFi, and Google Home.

dell latitude 5289 reviewThe Dell Latitude 5289 is a 2-in-1, 12.5-inch convertible. I’ve been spending some quality time with an i5-powered one.

I still enjoy using my Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro. I bought it so I could have an ultrabook when I needed a laptop and a tablet for when jabbing at the screen was required.

The Latitude 5289 is a similar beast in that it can flip and fold between both aforementioned modes.

How was my Latitude experience?

Dell Latitude 5289 design

The 5289 is a compact black slab that looks more utilitarian than lust-worthy. Although I do love the soft-touch coating it has.

Also, I must add, it is far from ugly. As a friend said when I introduced it to him “There is a lot to said for classy and understated”. I am pretty sure he was talking about the Latitude and not your’s truly.

latitude 5289 front closedThe ultrabook measures 0.73 x 12 x 8.3-inches (HxWxD) and weighs in at 1.34kg. Nicely portable.

The 5289 apparently has bragging rights to have survived an array of MIL-STD 810G tests for temperature extremes, vibration, and shock. The display has been treated to Gorilla Glass 4 protection.

latitude 5289 tablet standIt certainly feels sturdy. However, I have not been brave enough to drop it or shove it in the freezer. I do have to hand this back in one piece at the end of my allotted review period.

There are ports aplenty which is great to see when other companies, mentioning no names (Apple), are cutting right back.

latitude 5289 right portsYou get two USB-C/DisplayPort connectors, a HDMI port and a USB 3.0 port on the left side.

latitude 5289 left portsOver on the right side you’ll find the power button, a volume rocker, an audio jack, microSD card and SIM slots, another USB 3.0 port, and a Noble (not Kensington) lock slot. Naturally, 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are all present and correct.

On the base of the machine there are two, practically full-width, rubber feet. These rubbery rails do a great job of preventing this laptop from sliding around your desk.

The base model of the Latitude 5289 makes do with an Intel Core i3 CPU, 4GB of memory, and a 128GB solid-state drive.

What I have here is loaded with a Core i5-7300U running at 2.60GHz. This is also packing 256GB of SanDisk X400 M.2 SSD and 8GB of RAM.

It is, of course, delivered with Windows 10 as its operating system of choice.

You can add a pen for on-screen scribbling. This latches on to the 5289’s side through magnet magic.

The Latitude looks decent and feels nice. I like it.

Dell Latitude 5289 performance

As I said before, this Latitude feels solid. There’s virtually no flex from the keyboard or display.

Even when holding it at the bottom corner in laptop mode and using the touchscreen, there is no noticeable wobble.

latitude 5289 side openBoot-up time is swift and there is no noticeable lag when flicking between applications.

Wi-Fi connectivity is stable and I did not suffer any drop out when moving around my home or office.

Keys

The nicely back-lit keyboard is not quite full-sized. It sits in a slightly recessed tray and is really comfortable to use.

latitude 5289 keyboard lightsInstead of whisking away the Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down keys away to the land of Fn-key confusion, these have their very own homes.

I have to say that the screen reacts better than the trackpad to my digits. The buttons below it seem to play well-enough to my thumb jabs though.

After playing with the touchpads on the latest Acer Aspires, I can’t help but feel that Dell has let itself down here.

Display

The 5289’s anti-reflective, anti-smudge 12.5-inch display is bright enough for most tasks. Dell rates this at 255 nits, if that makes sense to you.

Text and videos on the 1920×1080 screen are sharp but the colours and contrast fail to make any of it ‘pop’. I think that this all lends the Latitude to long hours on working train journeys, rather than exciting movie or game action. You do get 176 pixels packed in per inch, mind you.

latitude 5289 screenThere is a little backlight bleeding but blacks render good and inky.

The screen responds swiftly and accurately to touch input, which is great.

latitude 5289 open flatWhen unfurled so that the screen and keyboard should lie out flat, they don’t. I can’t actually think of a time when I’d need to use it in that position but I’ve seen other convertibles manage it.

This is by no means a deal-breaker. Just thought I’d throw it out there.

Audio

The bottom front-mounted speakers produce good sound.

There were instances where the throw of sound almost tricked me in to believing that the soundstage was much wider than it actually was. This might have been down to how I had the ultrabook on my lap, or some strange Dell-magic. Either way, it was pleasing.

latitude 5289 tablet angleAcoustic tracks came though bright and crisp, albeit with pianos and vocals missing definitive low end. Chuck something on a little more complicated and involved and the speakers start to struggle to discern instruments.

For video conferencing, however, it’s plenty good enough on the clarity and focus fronts.

Longevity

Working away from walls with sockets is the mobile employee’s worst nightmare.

However, relax now. The Latitude has more stamina than a troupe of Chippendales would have you believe they had.

laptop latitude 5289-2-in-1I have easily seen 10+ hours use or more during my weeks of commutes and lunch hour testing.

Getting a day of work and entertainment seems easily possible.

Dell Latitude 5289 review conclusion

Performance from this Latitude convertible has been impressive and consistent.

Gaming is not the 5289’s forte, but it has never claimed such.

yoga 2 pro and latitude 5289 tablet standWatching movies, updating socials and getting stuff done – this is where the Latitude is happiest. It will also keep on going whilst other similarly-priced machines will be searching for a plug socket.

The Dell Latitude 5289 fitted with the Core i5 is a reliable performer on all counts. Furthermore, it has the build quality to withstand the every-day-use of a portable device.

Dell Latitude 5289 price and availability

You can buy the Latitude 5289 now, of course, directly from Dell UK.

Prices start at a reasonable £897.

If you are looking to buy one with the same spec as reviewed here, that will cost you £1,047. With that though, you are getting a great workhorse.

TECH ADADICTS UK PodcastIn today’s episode, Gareth and Gavin take a look at what’s been going on in the gadgety world this week.

I was busy checking out a parasol with artificial intelligence (true story!) but you are in safe hands with the G-Team!

With the Apple WWDC looming the Tech Addicts have a chat about what’s expected next week.

We also have an interview with Harry from F-Secure about their SENSE IoT security tech. I will be flying out to Finland in a couple of weeks to check out for myself.

As well as all of this, you get the usual reviews and bargain spotting.

Grab yourself a refreshing beverage and hit play.
