Brainwavz announces the availability of the Koel balanced armature earphones.

With the Koel earphones, Brainwavz hopes to continue where the other recent headsets left off. Understandable when the B200 received 5-star reviews and the B400 added ‘best in-ear earphone’ to the trophy cabinet. As with all Brainwavz products, their aggressive pricing is also not to be overlooked.

The balanced armature in-ear-monitors (IEM’s) drivers are tuned to produce a balanced and accurate sound signature. Furthermore, you get audio with little to no colouring. All of that adds up to a genuine sound experience and a great introduction to the world of refined audio.

Brainwavz Koel IEM

The Koel is lightweight and ergonomic. The IEMs have been created to sit comfortably in the ear for a true fit-and-forget experience. The unique shells are designed and printed in-house using state-of-the-art 3D resin printers. This enables the makers to shape the cases in a way that is not possible using standard manufacturing methods. The rest of the Koel has been assembled using components from the USA and Europe.

Additionally, the Koel earphones are accompanied by one detachable MMCX 3.5mm cable, 6 sets of silicone ear tips, and one set of Comply T-100 memory foam tips. Finally, there is also a stylish carrying case added to the bundle to protect the earphones when not in use.

Brainwavz Koel

Brainwavz looks to be continuing their bang-for-buck reputation with this latest offering. Add to that their 24-month warranty, there’s little in the way of trying these bargain IEMs.

Price and availability

The Brainwavz 3D printed balanced armature Koel earphones are available for £53.20.

best 3D printers uk3D Printing has come a long way in a short time. While it is yet to achieve the Star Trek level of immediacy and convenience, “rapid prototyping” has gone from novelty to mainstream, and with it a whole industry has grown.

The UK has a lot of 3d printers to choose from, which should you consider investing in?

We have rounded up the best options for 2017. Let’s dig in!

First, let’s start with the very cheapest of the budget end …

Anet A8

anet a8 3d printerWhile this Prusa i3 clone is the cheapest of the cheap 3d printer kits, it has a whole community behind it and it has the capability to create surprisingly good output if you build it right and spend some time on it.

It is supplied as acrylic, but free instructions are available to upgrade it to a metal frame using off the shelf aluminium extrusion, that takes it to a whole more solid level. The base kit is great though, and is well-suited to people just starting out and wanting to dip in a toe, or for families looking for a project to build together.

Available from Amazon.co.uk for around £175. In fact, GearBest has them in a Flash Sale right now for £110!

Creality CR-10

creality cr-10 3d printerStill considered budget, this machine has an astonishing 300mm x 300mm build plate (with the option to even go bigger, up to 500mm x 500mm!).

Output quality is excellent with the correct settings, it has reliability only beaten by machines double the price, and even more convenient, it comes almost fully assembled. In literally half an hour you can be up and printing to a high quality level.

You can buy the Creality CR-10 from either Amazon for just over £400. GearBest currently has them from £290.

Prusa i3 Mk2s/Mk3

original-prusa-i3-mk2-kitWe are getting into the upper end of the hobbyist price range here, but still as a kit this is affordable to many, and pre-built still comes in at a reasonable cost considering the high quality, branded parts, the technology that makes it much more easy to use and reliable, and the fact this machine is the one many are “inspired” by and compare to.

Output quality is stellar, and with Prusa’s own software, it’s plug and play.

Currently you can only order these direct from Prusa. Prices start at $699 for the DIY kit or pay another $200 for pre-assembled.

Lulzbot Taz 6

lulzbot taz 6If you need a larger build area but still have responsive support, then the next step from the Prusa is the Lulzbot family. These machines are rock solid, industrial strength beasts. While they don’t have the fine details of the Prusa, they have the sheer beast-like construction that makes them robust and ready to take a daily bashing.

You even have the option of the “Moarstruder” to print big, beefy layers in a fraction of the time.

The Taz 6 can be yours for around £2,450 from Amazon.

Ultimaker 3

ultimaker 3The gold standard of the “prosumer” level 3d printers, this machine has a hefty price tag, but premium quality and convenience to match.

As all the machines in this list, you can use any 3rd party filament and software, but it really shines when you use all Ultimaker and get the benefit of their end-to-end ecosystem. They provide hardware, software, and materials that all work together to make a “it just works” experience. Even the filament has tech – Ultimaker branded filaments have NFC tags that speak to the printer to tell it which materials you are using to make it absolutely foolproof.

Just like Lulzbot, you can easily swap and change hot-ends, plus this guy comes complete with dual extruders so you can have two colours, or have one dedicated to dissolvable support material.

Quality of output is the best of the bunch due to the way the mechanical aspects are organised (the bed only moves in the Z axis, and the extruders are fixed to the machine rather than the X carriage), and the fact Ultimaker designed the machine from the ground-up rather than picking off the shelf parts.

The best does come at a price. Amazon has the UM2+ for sale at £3,400. You can nab the regular UM3 from official resellars for £3,354.00 inc VAT and UK postage. The Extended version will cost you £4,242.00 inc VAT and delivery.

Conclusion

  • If your budget is tight, build your own Anet A8
  • Need a big build area but still on a budget, go with the highly respected and reviewed CR-10
  • Want something that is high quality but won’t max out your credit card? The Prusa is the world’s best general purpose 3d printer.
  • Going for convenience and quality, to heck with the budget? You won’t be disappointed with the Ultimaker.

iphone x announcementApple held its usual hype-fest at its new Cupertino headquarters last night. There they unveiled its latest lineup of gadgets and software. However, could this be the first time in quite a while that we’ve seen Apple innovate once more?

If you have 2 hours to spare then feel free to sit through the entire event.

However, if you have more going on in your life, I have tried to break down the fruit-fest in to five headings and a few sentences under each.

So, let’s sprint through this together.

New iPhones

iphone xYup, unless you’ve been without power or an internet connection, you will have heard that there are some new iPhones. In fact, Apple revealed triplets.

The iPhone 8, the iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X, as we already know, are as expected.

The first two are small upgrades over last year’s iPhone 7 lineup (standard Apple practise), whilst the iPhone X is an eye-wateringly expensive glimpse in to Apple’s future.

The iPhone 8 is the iPhone 7 with wireless charging, upgraded cameras and a faster processor. It retains the iPhone 7’s water resistance, thankfully and launches later this month starting at £699 (£799 for the iPhone 8 Plus).

The iPhone X is an actual new device. You get practically a full-screen display as well as a powerful new front-facing camera with Face ID and other skills.

It starts at £999 with the top dog asking £1149 and you can pre-order yours from 8:01 am on Oct 27th.

[youtube id=”mW6hFttt_KE”]

iOS 11

ios 11Even if you’re not intending to buy an iPhone 8 or X, you can still play with the new iOS 11 software (as long as your iPhone supports it).

The latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system officially launches on Sept 19th.

iOS 11 brings the ability to record your onscreen activity and adds a better tool for snapping and editing screenshots.

It also includes a peer-to-peer payment option for Apple Pay, a redesigned Control Center and new augmented reality (AR) features thanks to ARKit.

apple ARKitApple’s AR skills are being lauded as being a “game changer” and, well, it could be. The thing is, the ZenPhone AR (released last month – Google got there first again) has one massive Achilles Heel. Battery life.

It looks like this will be a shared problem with the iPhone. Word is that, after 30 minutes of AR gaming, then it’s time to hit that wireless charging.

Well, at least it will be handy to see if your new Ikea bookcase will actually fit and suit the room though.

iPad users are handed an easily accessible dock for saving your favorite apps.

Face ID

face idTouch ID, Apple’s fingerprint-scanning technology, has been around since the iPhone 5s launched in 2013. Yesterday, Apple started its countdown to destruction.

Last night Apple introduced Face ID, a face-scanning system exclusive to the iPhone X. Although, they did have a little problem with it, but that’s live demos isn’t it?

Face ID uses an array of cameras and sensors to unlock your device, activate Apple Pay and more. Apple also says its a lot more secure than Touch ID.

Scanners

Now, this is the bit that I am actually excited about. Where most people are looking at Animoji (also reveled at the launch) and talking chickens, I can see this 3D-scanning tech becoming awesome.

Not only is there the opportunity for us to have a virtual presence that actually looks like us, but how about scanning objects and then pinging that over to a 3D printer?

This is definitely something I hope that Apple builds upon and, perhaps, Android too.

Apple Watch Series 3

apple watch 3The fruity wearable also got some pretty big upgrades.

Apple Watch 3 features LTE, which means you can use it to make calls or play songs on Apple Music without syncing to your iPhone.

Apple also announced some upgrades to its watchOS software, including a redesigned workout app and improvements to the heart rate monitor. Your Apple Watch will display your heart rate right on the home screen, and it can warn you if

Your Apple Watch will display your heart rate right on the home screen, and it can warn you if you’re heart rate goes up when you aren’t working out. A potential life saver.

The Apple Watch Series 3 launches on Sept 22nd starting at £329.

An upgrade to watchOS 4 will be available for older models starting on Sept 19th.

Apple TV 4K

apple 4k tv withremoteFinally, Apple is upgrading its set-top box to support 4K video. If you have a 4K television this is great news.

The Apple TV 4K can stream high-resolution video from services such as Netflix.

It offers High Dynamic Range too for brighter and more realistic colours.

Apple’s also putting a big emphasis on live sports. The Appcolours4K features a dedicated tab for live and upcoming games.

If your favourite team is playing or if there’s a particularly close match, it will even surface those games automatically.

Round up

Well, that’s it in a nutshell.

The iPhone X might be more expensive than most of us thought it would be, but I am sure it will still sell well.

It is easy to bash Apple on that aspect alone, but at least they have delivered a new device and managed to present some things that have not been seen on a phone before.

It’s now down to the buying public to react with their cash. Now, we just have to wait until next year for Samsung’s folding phone.

I like that the Apple Watch no longer needs to be tethered to a Phone and Apple has brought 4K to its telly box. This could see the Ultra-HD tech adopted a bit more widely. That, hopefully, could have the knock-on effect of 4K TVs becoming cheaper. Perhaps. Maybe.

rival 700

rival 700 boxSteelSeries recently released a new gaming mouse, the Rival 700, and seeing its customisation abilities and OLED screen, I just had to review it.

SteelSeries has some great tech for serious gamers and I know that the Rival 300 has been a firm favourite for many FPS fans.

The Rival 700 looks to tick all the right (mouse) buttons, as well as the inclusion of light profiles. Furthermore, it brings something that I have never ever seen on a mouse before. That customisable OLED screen. That really needs to be investigated.

Does this new gaming mouse from SteelSeries carry the torch forwards, or has the bling got in the way of performance?

Rival 700 design

The mouse comes bundled with a 2 meter long braided cable and a shorter, 1 meter, rubber-coated laptop cable.

rival 700 bundleI love the fat, long and low profile of my Corsair M65 (yes it could do with a clean) but the Rival 700 seems to follow a more conventional mouse design.

m65 and Rival 700The Rival 700 has an almost typical 2:1 size ratio at 4.92(L) x 2.70(W) x 1.65(H) inches / 124.85 x 68.46 x 41.97 mm.

The first thing I notices was that the SteelSeries controller weighs quite a bit more than my M65. The Rival 700 tips the balance at 135 grams, in contrast to the 31g of my Vengeance mouse.

rival 700 gripThe sides of the mouse are covered with textured rubber grips and the rubber textured scroll wheel has a flush tread.

rival 700 rearThe mouse has two RGB light zones and features a removable rubber nameplate at the rear.

There are no fewer than 7 programmable buttons, and a removable top cover adds to further customisabilty (that’s a word, right?).

Rival 700 customisation

Hardware

As this is an obvious unique selling point (USP) I reckon this deserves a section to itself.

Let me start with possibly the most important aspect. The Rival 700 comes equipped with the fantastic 16,000 DPI PixArt PMW3360 optical sensor. This can be swapped out by way of four screws so that you can slip in the Pixart 9800 laser sensor module if you should so wish.

rival 700 front blueThe rubber nameplate at the rear end of the mouse can be removed. SteelSeries provides a template on the Rival 700 product page for 3D printers. This allows you to personalise your mouse with your name, or your team logo, etc.

The top cover can also be removed and replaced with another piece from SteelSeries. The cover pack comes with one glossy cover and one anti-sweat textured cover.

Software

More tweaking can be achieved via the SteelSeries Engine 3 software. This plays nice with Windows and OS X.

This program allows adjustments to the button assignments, sensor tracking settings, and lighting configurations.

steelseries engineThe Rival 700 also supports the GameSense feature which allows the mouse to react directly in response to game events. At the moment there’s not much support but Counter-Strike Global Offensive (CS:GO), DOTA 2, and Minecraft do.

GameSense takes up its own submenu where you can configure the Rival 700’s RGB LEDs, OLED screen, and tactile motor. You can also set when the vibrations happen via the Tactile menu. This allows customisation to when and how the feedback motor reacts to assigned game events. Multiple game events can be assigned to trigger the motor such as low health, low ammo, stun states, and so on.

Buttons

Opening the settings for the Rival 700 for the first time you’ll see the CONFIGS sidebar. This shows five on-board profiles and any locally stored profiles.

The seven buttons (Left and Right, the three thumb buttons, CPI and scroll) as well as the scroll wheel are all fully customisable.

To the right are various sliders for adjusting the tracking sensor. These are the two sensitivity banks, pointer acceleration, angle snapping / prediction, and polling rate / latency.

You can also set a key or mouse button to trigger a timer that vibrates the mouse when time’s up.

rival 700 oledThere’s a whole slew of customisable button settings: keyboard keys, macros, media controls, and any other mouse button can be sorted.

The Macro Editor has two interfaces. Here keypresses and delays are shown in a flow diagram allowing for macro micromanagement.

Alternatively, the text macro editor makes it much easier to dump a block of words, sentences, or even paragraphs. Handy for those RPG players.

Lights. Action!

The Illumination Effects menu is perhaps the most fun. Each zone, track wheel and SteelSeries logo, can each be assigned a preset or custom colour effect. This is all very easily configured.

rival 700 side violetNow, that OLED screen.

You can, of course put what you want on there. I managed to get my band logo to appear (please excuse the blurry pic), but there’s other things you can do.

rival 700 lackFor instance, get it to display the ‘Headshot’ graphic when you take someone out in that matter when playing CS:GO.

There are even GIFs you can download made by the community. To me, this brings back memories of when you could buy designs for your Nokia from the back of magazines and newspapers.

I guess the main difference is that these can be triggered by certain things. Although its usefulness for imparting important info at crucial moments is dubious.

Rival 700 performance

The mouse feels just about right for me to use a ‘claw grip’ as well as the more standard ‘palm grip’. Although, as I have quite long fingers, the palm grip isn’t ideal for me. Using the ‘finger tip grip’ doesn’t really feel comfortable on this mouse for me either as it’s a tad slim. It might be one of those things that gets easier after a while though.

The important thing is that the Rival 700 performs brilliantly. I couldn’t confuse it with swift movements and it tracked well even through magnified scopes.

rival 700 pink sideThe buttons are useful and I preferred the placement of the thumb buttons on the SteelSeries mouse than my Corsair daily driver.

All the buttons give good feedback with nice, definite clicks.

The scroll wheel is also precise as is its button.

I even like the vibration feedback. The good thing is, as the feedback motor runs up and down, it doesn’t throw things off balance when it kicks in.

Rival 700 review conclusion

I cannot ignore that the Rival 700 owns (or PWNS) some firsts. The tactile feedback motor, swapable tracking sensor and an OLED screen are all new to me on a mouse.

Does it need these though? Well, the vibrating feedback works remarkably well I have to say. I like it.

The swapable sensor? Well, if there were other units than the one on offer, possibly. I suppose it does somewhat future-proof it when better ones come along. The thing is, the one in the mouse already is pretty darned fantastic.

[youtube id=”ZPI4J-IqLi4″]

The OLED screen? I can’t help but think that this is the equivalent of spinners on your hubcaps. It’s not really there for anything other than impressing the people around you. It is fun but taking your eyes of the monitor to check what’s going on your mouse – you get shot in-game my friend. I know. I was there man.

The Engine 3 software is easy to use and I do like the light configurations too.

This is a great mouse and definitely one for those who like to pimp their controllers. This is one FPS mouse that you cannot ignore.

samsung galaxy x skinNow, here’s a test. Who here can remember the Samsung Foldiplay from 2013? Well, It’s folding smartphone rumour time again!

Granted, this fold-up tech could well be the biggest mobile technology breakthrough since the invention of the touchscreen but we have already seen Samsung and LG come up with concepts only to be thwarted when it comes to the flexibility of other smartphone components, as well as the durability of the stretchy ensemble.

OPPO may have recently joined the ranks of Android device manufacturers cooking up bendy handhelds but I reckon it’s a safer bet that Samsung’s Youm concept, now codenamed Project Valley, will hit the shelves first.

That could actually be as soon as “early” next year.

According to Bloomberg, word has it that two Galaxy X models, one capable of folding in half like a “cosmetic compact”, and the second a 5-incher with the capacity to unfurl into an 8-inch tablet.

I hope the latter is something akin to the Paperfold concept we saw a couple of years ago. This would be both compact and portable without having to sacrifice a large media-friendly screen.

Foldable smartphone conceptI think the modern twist of the flip phone could really bring back the memories for those of us around in the 90s – not only that though, it would also improve the portability of today’s many jumbo-sized gadgets.

Apparently, Samsung somehow managed to resolve the biggest obstacle preventing Galaxy X mass-manufacturing – “making transparent plastics and making them durable” – so the final challenge could be coming up with a “user interface suitable for bendable screens.”

All eyes will now be on Samsung at the 2017 Mobile World Congress in February. If that goes well, a commercial launch (or two) may take place in the ensuing months.

This is genuinely exciting times!

3-d printer

3-d printerOne of the downsides to all of those dominating big brands is that individuality slowly becomes a rarity as businesses start to adjust their aesthetics to be more in line with whatever is selling best. While this does mean that you get a product that is stylish, you also lose a bit of yourself in the sameness. This is even true with many of the accessories you can purchase to help stand out. Many of the designs and colours tend to boil down to being the same. However, this is where 3-D printing helps you make a break.

No longer are you limited to what sells best because, these days, you can customise your smartphone accessories yourself thanks to the range of 3-D printers out there.

Cases

Cases are the easiest and cheapest way to customise your device while adding protection from spills and drops.

3D Printed Smartphone CaseOther than the size needed to physically fit on your phone, the design choices are limitless. Any colour that is available to print from can be used for your case, and you can make intricate designs that are not normally available or are prohibitively expensive in store-bought cases.

You also have the ability to include cut outs that show off logos or to give a better grip when you 3-D print your case.

Stands

Sometimes you just want to stay in bed watching YouTube or Netflix. But using your hands to hold it all night can be annoying, so a custom stand makes it easier to relax.

With a little ingenuity you can add custom functions to a stand, such as including places for wrapping your charging cord or adding amplifiers for your phone’s speakers.

Because you have the ability to create negative spaces within a 3-D printed object, you can easily run charging cords or plates to create a customised charging stand or night stand clock, so you’ll always know where your phone is in the morning.

The old party trick of putting your phone into an empty glass to increase the resonance of the speakers also gets a bit more mature with 3-D printing. The stands can be integrated with this space, giving your phone’s speakers a boost while being a little bit more classy than a red solo cup.

Gaming

Recently, there has been a push to more seamlessly integrate the use of mobile devices into a full-fledged gaming experience. This is evident with devices like the Sony Xperia line that work as a mobile screen for the PlayStation 4 system.

You can design custom cases and holders to make a phone-based gaming experience more comfortable. Incorporate grips that resemble traditional controllers, so there is less strain on your hands.

3d printed vrThese custom rigs also translate into holders for augmented reality headsets, similar to Oculus or Google Cardboard. While some phones like the Galaxy Note 4 work seamlessly with Samsung’s VR headset, other phones need 3-D printing techniques to have a more premium feel.

What would you print?

The wonderful thing about 3-D printing is that you are only limited by your imagination. Everything from skins, cases, bumpers and stands can be quickly and easily created.

Even if you don’t have the design experience, chances are someone on the Internet has already developed and created the idea, which means you’re never out of luck.

hoover flashlightThere’s a bunch of people I know who already are kitted out with 3D printers and where this used to be the domain of the Gadgety hobbiest, now that more and more companies are allowing consumers to print their own parts and accessories, I’m starting to think that I should be joining in. Following in the footsteps of Hasbro and Martha Stewart, Hoover will now let consumers print their own accessories for its vacuums, improving their functionality.

The company has just announced that they will release a couple of 3D-printable models through MakerBot‘s Thingiverse platform which can be downloaded by anyone wanting to add additional functionality to their Hoover Air Cordless vacuum cleaner.

One of the accessories (above) allows a flashlight to be clipped onto its extension wand to make it easier to spot fluff and such dark corner detritus. The other (below) is a snap-on mount that allows the vacuum’s extra rechargeable battery to piggyback on the vacuum’s handle.

Wanting an even finer nozzle attachment? Reckon that cleaning up would be better if your Hoover had a can holder or two? Just print them off yourself.

The company will also be listening closely to customer feedback about this initiative, and will be open to considering almost any suggestion for other parts and accessories. I’m sure that Hoover will be wanting you to keep them clean 😉

3d printed key bump

3d printed key bumpI am sure that these have already been 3D printed but this is the first time I’ve seen someone admit to creating their own ‘bump key’.

Bump keys are primitive tools used by locksmiths, as well as ne’er-do-wells, to knock open simple locks.

Until now, many locks were secure simply because they were too tricky to ‘bump’, unless you’re a spy with access to a hair-clip. Basically, because few people have the tools and the knowledge, you were pretty safe, but that’s all about to change.

Jos Weyers and Christian Holler have created these keys which have been designed to knock or bump the pins in a standard lock into place after a few taps with a hammer. The pair discovered how to 3D print a piece of plastic that will fit into the keyhole based on a photo of the hole itself. A few carefully cut notches in the plastic and you’ve got a usable bump key.

The pair don’t want us to break into jewelers or galleries with their tool. Instead, they want to show how primitive most locks really are and how it’s becoming easier and easier to foil physical security systems.

If anyone with a 3D printer and a camera can make a key, how secure are we?

Just as well I have secondary security by way of a good old-fashioned tiger pit. Just saying 😉

Check out the video below and remember to put the deadbolt on before going to bed.

Roccat Skeltr gaming keybaord

Roccat Skeltr gaming keybaordRoccat has announced its Nyth modular gaming mouse and Skeltr keyboard/smartphone combo. Both are supposed to the be the first of their kind, the question is what makes them fit for such a bold claim?

Roccat this week unveiled a new gaming keyboard called the Roccat Skeltr. Not much news there. Companies regularly release new gaming keyboards. The difference with the Skeltr is that it enables you to integrate your smartphone with it add extra functionality through a companion app.

The Roccat Skeltr gaming keyboard and app combine to allow you to connect both your smartphone and keyboard together using Bluetooth so that your mobile becomes a second screen.

The sliding rail and rotating holster fit every size smart device, according to Roccat. René Korte, CEO and founder of Roccat explains:

being able to use your keyboard to communicate on your smartphone is a no-brainer feature Roccat fans will deeply appreciate

Roccat Skeltr rearRoccat has also shown off its new Nyth gaming mouse which will be debuted along with the new gaming keyboard during Gamescom 2014 in Cologne, Germany next week.

We’ve wanted to develop our own MMO mouse for a long time, but like always, we end up seeing a bigger picture once we begin brainstorming. MMO mice have these massive button grids that are locked in. You can change the button functionality, but what if you don’t like the layout?

ROC NythRoccat hasn’t said anything about the innards of the Nyth (isn’t that near Swansea?), so if you want to know about DPI or IPS or whatever, you’re going to have to wait for its full and proper debut at Gamescom.

Saying that though, the modular button design is undeniably interesting. Not only does it allow users to cook up whatever kind of button layout works for them, it also lets owners of 3D printers create their own, or to select and print designs from Roccat’s online library.

With a replaceable side-part, coupled with our button modularity, the Nyth can absolutely transition into a perfectly fine-tuned MOBA mouse, and yes, even an FPS mouse. The Nyth adapts, evolves, and keeps on giving far into the future. It’s a remarkable peripheral conceptualized and created by our amazing design team.

More details, specifications and prices for both the new gaming keyboard and mouse will be made available by Roccat next week. I’ll be sure to keep you posted.
