UK finally gets Amazon Cloud Drive – 5GB Free!
Amazon Cloud Drive is now available for us Brits – it’s only taken over a year for us to join our American cousins in the joy of the online store’s cloud storage.
Before there was the official announcement I managed to find the UK Amazon Cloud Drive page over the bank holiday weekend I was expecting to have to wait until Amazon’s press event on 6 September. This is when we all want to hear news about the latest Kindle Fire hitting these shores as well as, just maybe, some snippet about an Amazon smartphone.
Available in the US for over a year now, UK users get the same 5GB of free cloud storage through the service as our US counterparts.
Compatible with both PC and mac, the Amazon Cloud Drive App offers enough storage space for around 2,000 photos, free of charge, while 20GB of storage costs just £6 a year. £320 a year will bag you a giant 1TB worth of cloud-based storage.
All sorts of media, be they documents, videos, music files or images, can be stored and shared through the service.
The Amazon Cloud Drive lands in a now busy UK market for cloud storage services. The newly, even more secure Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft SkyDrive and Apple iCloud all offer similar features.
Amazon has scheduled a press event for 6 September, with rumours abound it’ll unveil the sequel to the Kindle Fire Android tablet.
The Kindle Fire 2 is said to be thinner, lighter, and have a rear-facing camera, which was missing from the original (which still isn’t available to us Brits). The screen could also be beefed up to 1,280×800-pixels, matching the Google Nexus 7’s. The Nexus 7 has undercut the Kindle Fire, so Amazon could well want to see off the threat from the big G.
