What you have to know about GearBest

  1. Shipping: GearBest is a Chinese online shopping website that’s able to deliver worldwide. The logistics department is able to dispatch to over 150+ nations. While four years ago the most common shipping method was “flat rate shipping”, nowadays GearBest developed a sophisticated delivery line called Priority Direct Mail. This shipping line, developed by GearBest, brings your order in your country with a dedicated carrier. A national express provider will then complete the shipping in as low as few hours. The dimensions of this shipping network made GearBest the biggest Chinese online B2B international shopping website
  2. Product selection: You won’t find the brands you are used to. GearBest portfolio of producers focuses on most promising Chinese brands: comparable quality at an unbelievable price. These brands might not be as popular as American top brands but the selection of Gadgets on GearBest is composed by the most popular and used by the earth’s biggest country
  3. Price: GearBest is the only distributor between the producer and the customer. There are no importers and no distribution partners to bring the product to you. With a workforce of over 5,000+ employees in the time frame of 4 years, GearBest managed to run in-house most of the logistics
  4. Support: you have plenty of ways to reach out GearBest. From facebook pages to forums and groups. If you are interested in a tv-box for example, you can reach out the dedicated group on facebook to check stock availability and coupons and have suggestion on the best delivery to use for your needs!

Bloggers Lounge Tech Blogger of the Year

Bloggers Lounge Tech Blogger of the YearYesterday I received some very exciting news – could GadgetyNews possibly stop always being the bridesmaid and never the bride?

Don’t get me wrong, I am very proud of what I have achieved so far with GadgetyNews. Over the past eight years I have watched the readership grow as well as my list of contacts and friends I have made through writing reviews and news that’s easy to understand.

This year GadgetyNews was in the final 10 for the UK Blog Awards and now it is in the final five for the Bloggers’ Lounge Tech Blogger of the Year Award!

To say that I am excited is an understatement. I am so happy to have my little corner of the interweblogosphere noticed, let alone be recognised by its peers.

blogger of the year 2015If you have a second or so to spare, please click here or the picture above to vote – the Tech Blogger category is the third down on the left-handside, unless you’re using a mobile.

Thanks to all of you who have already voted as well as those who will do.

Most of all, thanks for reading, commenting and for supporting GadgetyNews.

GagdetyNews cubeAmongst all the fancy dress costumes, fog and consumption of way too many sweets and chocolates over the weekend, GadgetyNews entered its ninth year.

Way back on October 30th 2007 I decided it was time to move my first attempts at a gadget and tech blog over from some temporary hosting and make it official.

What was Jay Garrett’s Gadget News (snappy huh?) was moved over to WordPress and the announcement, as is the way of WordPress blogs, appeared as a ‘Hello world!‘ post.

Nokia N95At that point I was so very in love with my brand new Nokia N95!

I am fortunate enough to have made a number of good friends and excellent contacts over the years which has enabled me to get hands-on with the latest tech and gadgets to review.

I’d like to think that my writing has improved and that the style of GadgetyNews has evolved. Most importantly though, after eight years and 5,797 posts, I hope that GadgetyNews is still keeping it low jargon for all your high tech needs.

Thanks to all who have dropped by.

gadget allergy

gadget allergyImagine, not being able to use a smartphone, tablet, PC or even bare to be around tech in general. I know, scary isn’t it. For some people this is a reality but is rarely treated as a serious thing. A breakthrough has happened though as a French woman has won a disability grant after telling a court she suffers from an allergy to electromagnetic radiation from gadgets.

The BBC reports that Marine Richard was told that she may claim €800 (£580) per month for three years as a result of her disability.

This is being considered a breakthrough for all people affected by electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS). The condition is recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO), even though the causes of this condition remain unclear.

Typical symptoms reported by those who say they suffer from EHS include headaches, fatigue, nausea and palpitations. The disability allowance was granted by a court in Toulouse, though the ruling did not formally recognise EHS as an illness.

Ms Richard had to move out to a remote area in the mountains of south-west France and live in a barn that has no electricity. Richard had been affected by everyday gadgets such as phones.

Anyone who watches the ‘Breaking Bad’ spin-off ‘Better Call Saul‘ may be familiar with the syndrome as Saul’s brother, Chuck, apparently suffered the with the same.

Electrosensitivty UK (ES-UK), a charity that campaigns for wider recognition of EHS, said it welcomed the French court’s decision.

The charity stated:

Several people in the UK have been diagnosed with electrosensitivity and received help for the disability but any financial allowance usually refers to a different name for the condition or a related condition,”

tech funeral

tech funeralIt is time to update those “Which songs would you have played at your funeral?” lists and add some tech because, according to the latest research, 1 in 3 UK funerals now includes a gadgety aspect.

Personally I’d like to put the ‘fun’ in to my funeral – perhaps a bouncy castle graveyard, or some ‘you’re dead funny’ helium balloons.

It seems that tech is making an ever increasing feature in funeral services these days with the majority seemingly featuring ‘video calls’ for those unable to attend the funeral and it seems that the people polled felt this is only the tip of the death day gadgets.

Now, I am aware of QR Codes embedded in to headstones and even coffins that feature mobile phones for those calls from the other side.

The study, conducted by perfectchoicefunerals.com, polled 2,145 British adults, all of whom were aged 18 or over, with an even gender split. In order to be eligible for the survey, all participants were required to have attended a funeral within the last 18 months – I am a bit concerned that this may have incited some uninvited appearances 😉

Initially, all participants were asked ‘Have you been to a funeral in which technology played a role within the last 18 months?’ They were asked not to include music played through a CD or MP3 player when considering their answer. 1 in 3 (32%) of respondents revealed that they had been to a funeral in the past 18 months where technology was used in some way.

The survey then asked these respondents to reveal what the technology was. Respondents were able to select all answers that were applicable, which revealed the below top 5:

  1. Video call – 21%
  2. Memorial videos –  19%
  3. Digital order of service – 15%
  4. Music streamed – 13%
  5. Photobooth – 4%

A photobooth? Really? I know that weddings and funerals are probably those times when you get to see great aunt Ethel who now lives miles away but, really? I am guessing that the photobooths are there for the attendees and not to get that last snap with the dearly departed!

All relevant respondents were asked to reveal what effect the technology used had on the service.

The majority of respondents (67%) said that it had a positive effect, with almost half of these (49%) saying that it had a positive effect because it brought distant friends and family together and involved them in the service.

Those who experienced the use of ‘video calls’ during a funeral were asked to reveal why this had been done. A majority of 65% of respondents said that it had been done so that those living abroad or far away could share the day to remember their loved one.

All respondents were asked to reveal whether they felt comfortable with the use of technology in funerals, to which a majority of 59% revealed that they did not. 76% of these felt it was ‘too disruptive’.

Finally, the survey asked all respondents whether they thought the role of technology in funerals would increase in years to come. A majority of 57% revealed that they thought that it would. When asked how they thought this would be so, 21% said that they believed holograms of the deceased would be used in funerals in the future.

Emma Simpson of perfectchoicefunerals.com made the following comments:

With digital developments comes a rise in the involvement of technology in funerals. Britons may feel uncomfortable with this, but it certainly adds a whole new element to someone’s final farewell.”

She continued:

A funeral is a tough time for everyone involved, so it’s nice for those living abroad or far away to share in the event in some form, even if it is via a video link. As for holograms at funerals, we think that’s a few decades away yet!”

Have you got your last event planned? What tech would you request?

Feedly Logo

Feedly LogoI clocked off for my lunch-break and headed, as usual, to news feed reader Feedly only to find that I couldn’t connect. It turns out that it is currently suffering a DDoS (distributed denial of service) attack.

The attack, and subsequent downage, has been announced on Feedly’s blog.

Users are currently unable to access the website or load any of your feeds via the app. Feedly explained in a short message that the DDoS perpetrator is holding Feedly to ransom and asking for money to stop the attack, Feedly has refused to comply.

CEO of Feedly, Edwin Khodabakchian, said in the following short statement:

Criminals are attacking feedly with a distributed denial of service attack (DDoS). The attacker is trying to extort us money to make it stop. We refused to give in and are working with our network providers to mitigate the attack as best as we can.

Khodabakchain went on to explain that users’ data is safe and that you will be “able to re-access your Feedly as soon as the attack is neutralized.” He continued: “We are working in parallel with other victims of the same group and with law enforcement.”

Evernote, which integrates with Feedly, also suffered a similar attack early this morning, although service was quickly restored.

heartbleedYou have no doubt by now heard about the encryption flaw called Heartbleed. It has already been called one of the biggest security threats the Internet has ever seen and has affected many popular websites and services — ones you might use every day. Here’s a quick list of the most popular ones that may require you to update your details.

If you have accounts with Gmail (maybe) and Facebook (more than likely) the Heartbleed hole could have quietly exposed your sensitive account information (such as passwords and credit card numbers) over the past two years.

Due to the nature of the Heartbleed bug, you’ll need to wait until affected sites update their infrastructure before you change your passwords.

Handily, the LastPass Security Check tool now includes recommendations for Heartbleed, letting you know which sites have closed the hole, when, and if you should update yet.

To run the tool, just click on LastPass and check the site’s URL – here’s the result for Apple.com.

fiveThis is a very special moment for me. 5 years ago I posted up the “Hello world” post which signalled that what started as Jay Garrett’s Gadgets on a temporary hosting was making an important move.

5 years and 4,300 posts (give or take a couple) later, I am thankful and, frankly amazed by the amount of support that PR companies, gadget makers and tech builders has given this one-man-band over the last few years.

More importantly though, is the amount of you out there that read my take on the world’s gadget news and have given me feedback through the site’s redesigns and focus.

Even though it has mainly been yours truly slinging words up on here every day – GadgetyNews would be nothing without you, the reader. Whether you slip by once in a while or avidly open your RSS reader when a new post lands – I thank every single last one of you and count you as one of the Gadgety Faithful.

Back in 2007 the best phone, in my opinion, was the Nokia N95. I kept that right up til I bought the iPhone 3G in June 2008. My N95 continued to be brilliant for another 2 or 3 years as my good friend bought it off me. Soon after I got my N95 the Nokia Music Store opened.

If you were an Apple fan back in 2007 you wouldn’t be raving about your MacBook Air as they didn’t exist. You could have been sat in a coffee shop with your MacBook Pro which had just been upgraded to feature Santa Rosa architecture if you were really happening, though 🙂

Back in 2007, you could grab a Sony PlayStation for £75 and get a robot to do most of your cleaning chores for the first time!

Thanks again and here’s to the next 5 years – surely we’ll have hoverboards and jet packs by then!

expanded tweets

expanded tweetsThe reason why Twitter has become such a great place for breaking news is its 140 character limit – but now Twitter is partnering with big media companies to expand what can be shared in a single Tweet.

Twitter announced today that it has introduced expanded Tweets.

These allows companies such as The New York Times and Wall Street Journal to embed a headline and even the introduction to an article within a single tweet. That’s like cheating isn’t it?

Part of the speediness of Twitter must be due to the 140 character limit, but in recent months Twitter has been expanding what users can do within a Tweet, allowing them to embed YouTube videos and Instagram photos that can be viewed within Twitter or one of its clients.

Today it’s adding more content for media partners, new sources for video, and even embedded audio from Soundcloud links – ok, so that’s handy for bands which is a good thing 🙂

The expanded Tweets will be rolling out on Twitter’s website and mobile site today, and coming soon for iOS and Android.
