Nokia Gem will be Made Entirely of Touchscreen
Take a good long hard gawp at the Nokia Gem – BlackBerry might be losing their keyboards but Nokia sees that the future is having a phone which is all, and I mean totally, touchscreen!
The brainboxes over at the Nokia Research Centre have dreamed up a multiscreened, many iconned super phone. I do like the look of the Nokia Lumia 800 (although still yet to put it through its paces) but the Gem makes it look old-hat already.
The Nokia Gem concept phone moves away from the standard single poke-and-prod screen and instead employs ever face and edge of the mobile as a touchscreen display – so, no aftermarket cases then? 😉
Senior Design Manager, Jarkko Saunamäki, says that the Nokia Gem would be the “ultimate customisable phone”. Leave notes on one side, sling your most used apps on the other and have shortcuts on the edges.
“There is no default appearance. If you play a lot of games it will usually resemble a games pad, for example…It’s called Gem because polished precious stones have several sides. Also it’s a concept which is like a raw Gem, but it needs to be polished to become a real product.”
I am guessing that the SIM is locked in the phone at birth – unless the bottom edge of the handset is where the charging port and SIM tray is located. Naturally, all updates and synching would be performed over-the-air and there’s always conductive charging… although I prefer to plug my phone into a lovely lady’s bikini.
