Microsoft Job Ads Reveal Plans for Second and Third Generation Surface Tablets

microsoft planning for more Surface tabletsIf you are contemplating in buying one of Microsoft’s first home-made tablets perhaps you should wait for Surface 2, as it sounds like it will be out sooner rather than later.

Microsoft has inadvertently revealed that work on its Surface 2 tablets has already begun thanks to the tech giant posting a number of job adverts online.

With Microsoft’s first-generation tablet devices, namely the Microsoft Surface for Windows RT and the Microsoft Surface for Windows 8 Pro, not even on sale yet it appears that the company is on a recruitment drive in order to take the momentum from the first Surface tablets to keep the pressure on the iPad and Android slates.

The job adverts, that were posted on Microsoft’s careers site between June and August, all began with the following:

“The Surface Team focuses on lighting up Microsoft experiences with touch first computing. A fundamental part of our strategy is having desirable and powerful devices that enable the experiences people want, and elicit their excitement. Creating these devices involves a close partnership between hardware and software engineers, designers, and manufacturing. We are currently building the next generation and Surface needs you!”

Microsoft also mentions “fast-paced product development cycles” which, to me, suggests that Surface 2 will quickly be followed by a third and fourth – perhaps following Apple’s annual roadmap.

Specific job descriptions reveal even more about what we might expect such as a position for a materials engineer which states that they would be working with PVD. Now, PVD stands for Physical Vapour Deposition which could essentially waterproof a device.

Perhaps the position for senior engineer who will be ‘charged’ with looking at designs for “alternative power sources.” would be of more interest? Excuse the pun there!

Are you surprised at Microsoft planning for its next tablets already? Will be buying the first Surface later this year?
