iPhone 8 packing curved OLED from their enemy

It looks like Apple and Samsung are becoming frenemies. The arch-rivals plan to continue to work together in 2017 with Samsung supplying the OLED display for Apple’s iPhone 8.

According to a report from the Korea Herald, Samsung is to provide a curved plastic OLED panel for the new iPhone 8.

Hopes are high that this plastic display will be flexible and be a less smash-happy iPhone screen.

Samsung is expected to be the exclusive supplier of OLED displays for at least two years.

There has been whispers that Apple might throw a glass layer over the top but a tipster clearly points out:

The OLED version of the new iPhone will all be curved as Apple ordered all plastic OLED — not glass — from Samsung Display.”

Apple is also rumoured to be doing away with the current TouchID button. The Cupertino company is said to be going for a method that allows the print to be read through the screen.

The end results should be a seamless, and practically edge-to-edge screen.

The iPhone 8 is also expected to feature wireless charging and come in two or even three variants.

Good news for Samsung

This is obviously going to be good news for Samsung. The company is no doubt still reeling from its explosive Note 7.

Samsung Display is a big deal in the OLED manufacturing world. In fact, it has a monopoly with over 95% of the market share.

The scale on which the Korean company manufactures these displays is pretty huge. This makes this a sensible move for Apple since iPhones tend to do well right after they hit the market.

And, this is what Apple wants in order to meet high demand so it doesn’t fall short on store supplies, as has happened in the past.

Sammy is expected to invest a huge chunk of money in building more display production lines over the next few years in order to meet the ever-growing demand for OLED displays.
