I did see a mock-up design of a new camper but I don’t think it got any further than that – shame really as you’ve said, it is one of those iconic surfer/hippy/drop out icons.

I still maintain that the new ‘Beetle’ should have the engine in the back and it be air-cooled :p

Not bad for a vehicle that started off life as a german troop transporter. I love the irony that it has become a hippy (peace & freedom icon.
