Defense Distributed are ready to test 3D printed downloadable guns

A firm looks to be setting up production of 3D printed weapons. Defense Distributed is a cooperative, non-profit organisation, designed to help create a blueprint for a 3D gun which they say will be ready to test before the end of the year.

Cody Wilson, spokesperson for the company which plans to create the ‘Wiki weapons’, claims all its waiting on now is a “little piece of paper” (otherwise known as a Federal Firearms License) and then will be able to officially begin manufacturing firearms.

This formal approval is expected to arrive in the next few weeks, after which some test weapons will be printed up from a selection of blueprints the company has ready to go.

“We’re ready,” said Wilson.

The most controversial part of this plan is that the required CAD files will eventually be made available for everyone to download and, therefore, be able to print themselves at home.

Defense Distributed has applied to the IRS to become a nonprofit 501(c)(3) that will focus on “charitable public interest publishing” – or distributing schematics of the weapons online for free.

Soon, there would be no need to worry about airport security as you’ll be able to print your chosen sidearm once you get to the hotel – a little more terrifying than downloading the blueprint for a whistle, robot or 70s muscle car,isn’t it?
