Tesco Android tablet? Do the Hudl
Tesco has entered the Android tablet market for all you Clubcard carrying members with the Hudl.
The supermarket says the Hudl will allow it to have a ‘single relationship’ with its customers. Presumably it will try to entice more people to shop online via the device, just like Amazon.
The new Tesco Hudl tablet is packing a 1.5Ghz quad-core processor, 7-inch 1440 x 900 HD screen, 16GB of storage, front and rear-facing cameras and Android 4.2.2.
The tablet also integrates a number of Tesco’s services such as Blinkbox – the grocer’s answer to Netflix and LoveFilm, as well as Clubcard TV.
In a statement, the company’s chief executive, Philip Clarke, said “Hudl is a colourful, accessible tablet for the whole family to enjoy. The first stage in our tablet offering, it’s convenient, integrated and easy to use with no compromise on spec. Customers are quite rightly very discerning about the technology they buy so we knew we had to be competitive on all fronts.”
“Being online is an increasingly essential part of family life and whilst tablets are on the rise, usage is still quite limited. We feel the time is right for Tesco to help widen tablet ownership and bring the fun, convenience and excitement of tablets to even more customers across the UK. The digital revolution should be for the many, not for the few.”
The Hudl comes in four colours and will be available to buy in store and via the Tesco online sites.
This low-cost strategy puts it in direct competition with Amazon, whose Kindle and Kindle Fire devices have been sold at cost to encourage online shopping. Tesco said it had designed the device itself rather than white-labelling a product made by another manufacturer.
Tesco has just revealed that it will cost £119 and go on sale from September 30th.
