Gaming Consoles Set for Extinction – Xbox 720, Wii U and PlayStation 4 Last of Breed

God of War and Twisted Metal creator David Jaffe has told Games Industry International that the next generation of consoles – namely the Xbox 720, PlayStation 4 and Wii U – will be the last.

This is not the first time that this has been predicted but things are looking decidedly dodgy for our prized plastic boxes of joy.

That’s not to say that gaming will die – that would be silly.

Jaffe reckons that consoles will die off within ten years and be replaced by streaming services such as Onlive and Gaikai that will be squirted direct to your Smart TV or IKEA purchase.

It looks like the Xbox 720, Wii U and PlayStation 4 may be the last consoles.

Jaffe’s predictions are based on the success of casual gaming on tablets and smartphones. If you think that  current consoles like the Xbox 360 are filling a media streaming role just as much as a gaming one – then the thought of Smart TV with inbuilt game streaming tech as well as all the other stuff aint such a leap really is it?
