Apple Announces iPhone 11, an always-on Watch and new iPad

At the usual small gathering of close friends and family, the Cupertino firm has unveiled its iPhone 11 range of handsets. Naturally taking cues from its rivals, the new iPhone range features more cameras than ever before. Additionally, the new fruity phones pack an updated processor that’s faster yet more economical with power.

Apple iPhone 11

Apple stated at the show-and-tell that the two Pro models would last between four to five hours longer than their XS predecessors.

iPhone 11

5G-less

An area where Apple has yet to catch up to the competition is by outing a 5G model. Granted, the 5G infrastructure is yet to be anything like useful at the moment, but, interestingly, companies such as Huawei can fit modems that are ready for full-fat 5G. Apparently, the lack of 5G is down to Intel not being able to develop the required modem in time.

Personally, if I were going to be signing up to a three-year contract, I’d want to know that my smartphone was at least ready for next year’s tech.

The iPhone 11 sports a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina display, which is the same size as the screen on 2018’s iPhone XR. Also the same as last year’s model is the position and size of the notch.

The dimensions of the phone are 150.9mm x 75.7mm x 8.3mm, and it tips the scales at 194 grams.

You should be able to bathe with your iPhone 11 as it’s water-resistant, boasting an IP68 rating.

Camera

iPhone 11 Pro Camera

On its glass-covered rear side, the new iPhones introduce an “ultrawide” camera, offering 2x optical zoom-out.

The Pro models add the new lens to the telephoto and standard lenses as per the last generation’s XS and XS Max, giving them three lenses. Some have likened the lens format to a fidget spinner while other reports say that the design has triggered people’s trypophobia (the fear of small holes).

The cheapest iPhone 11 rocks a dual-lensed rear with an ultrawide and standard lens.

Night Mode

Apple has watched Samsung, Google and especially Huawei sprint ahead in the low-light photography stakes and so proudly announced the iPhone 11’s new Night Mode.

The iPhone 11 Night Mode automatically brightens the image if needed as well as mitigates the digital noise produced as a result.

Deep Fusion

More interestingly, Apple’s Deep Fusion was touched upon. The sci-fi-sounding tech takes nine snaps with a variety of exposures and then sorts through them “pixel by pixel” finding the best parts from each to create a superior image.

The uprated camera tech also includes the ability to shoot slow-motion videos with the front camera as well as the rear.

Power

Under the hood, you’ll find the upgraded A13 Bionic processor.

Apple boasts that its CPU and GPU are both more potent than those featured in any Android phone.

Additionally, the chip’s “neural engine” has been optimised to handle matrix calculations better. Furthermore, they say its 20% faster than the A12.

No Poking

If you were fancying using the Apple Pencil stylus with the new iPhone 11, well, you can’t. Also, the new phones are not able to wirelessly recharge other accessories, unlike Samsung and Huawei’s premium phones.

iPhone 11 Price and Availability

The iPhone 11 starts cheaper than its XR forerunner in the UK, ranging between £729 and £879 depending on storage. That said, the Pro models are more spendy than the XS ones, with an asking price of between £1,049 and £1,499.

The new iPhone 11 comes in Purple, White, Yellow, Green, Black and Product Red.

You can pre-order the iPhone 11 from September 13, and it’ll ship (and be on the shelves) from September 20.

Apple Subscription services

Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade

Tim Cook announced that the upcoming Apple subscription services that would each cost £4.99 per month – Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade.

The Apple Arcade all-you-can-eat game service comes with a 1-month free trial.

You also can get Apple TV Plus for free for a year if you buy an Apple device such as a set-top box or computer. This TV show and movie-streaming platform will carry exclusive content and make its first programmes available on November 1.

In the presentation, it wasn’t stated whether Apple would bundle these new services with the company’s existing cloud storage, and music offerings for a discount, as was previously rumoured.

The New iPad

iPad 7th Gen

The seventh-generation model has a 10.2in (25.9cm) Retina Display screen – making it bigger than before.

The new iPad runs on the new iPadOS and will also connect with a full-sized Smart Keyboard.

Powered by the A10 Fusion chip that promises impressive performance. This means that it should handle games as well as multitasking. On the subject of gaming, you can pair an Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth, PlayStation DualShock 4 controller or MFi game controller with the iPad to create a portable games console.

Going on sale at the end of the month the new tablet will start at £349, a £30 increase on the earlier model.

Apple Watch Series 5

Apple Watch Series 5

Apple has also revealed a new version of its smartwatch. The latest wearable features an “always-on” display.

The Series 5 Watch adjusts how often it refreshes the screen to as little as one frame per second. That way, it can retain the18-hour battery life as the previous version.

The new watch also adds a compass and sleep-tracking software to its skills. Also, there’s a new titanium case option.

The company added that it will keep selling its Series 3 model, which will cost £199. A nifty way of offering an affordable entry-level to Apple Watch ownership. The Series 5 Apple Watch starts at £399.

Apple announces bigger, more expensive iPhone XS Max along with the new range and Watch.

Apple has finally unveiled its highly-anticipated trio of new iPhones. Furthermore, the fruity phone company has added yet another, more expensive, iPhone to its stable – the 6.5-inch iPhone XS Max.

The iPhone XS Max (or, 10S Max if we’re pedantic) will start at £1099. Boasting a Super Retina Display, it also now stands as the largest iPhone yet.

Apple revealed the new handset alongside its new £999 iPhone XS – a 5.8-inch device CEO Tim Cook says is “by far the most advanced iPhone we have ever created.” The firm also unveiled a more affordable model in a bid to ensure their devices “reach even more customers,” with the 6.1-inch iPhone XR shipping at £749. Finally, the new Series 4 Watch was also unveiled, featuring an overhauled design and new safety features including fall-detection.

iPhone XR and XS

iPhone XS and XR

There had been concerns that the relatively high £999 entry price of iPhone X would limit its appeal. However, Apple has said that the 10 had been more popular than either of the lower-priced iPhone 8 models. Where the cynical side of me would be prone to shrug and think “well they would, wouldn’t they”, word on the street is that the iPhone X also outsold other flagship phones.

Proof of those sales can be found in Apple becoming the world’s first company with a market capitalisation above $1tn (£768bn).

The XS Max will become the most expensive handset Apple has sold to date, with its price ranging from £1,099 to £1,449 depending on its amount of storage.

The XS will match the original X’s £999-£1,349 cost, while the XR will be £749-£899.

Bigger screen

iphone xr, iphone xs and iphone xs max

Apple highlighted that the iPhone XS Max’s display was significantly larger than the 5.5-inch screen of the old iPhone 8 Plus despite the two handsets being similar in size.

The iPhone XR also has a bigger screen but uses LCD rather than the OLED technology found in the more expensive models. Therefore, blacks won’t be as deep, and colours will have less contrast on the XR.

Additionally, its chassis is made from aluminium rather than steel, which means it is likely to be less damage-resistant. However, unlike the more expensive models, it comes in six different colours.

These options might encourage iPhone owners who did not upgrade last year to do so this generation.

New brain

The latest phones feature a fresh processor – the A12 Bionic. It the firm’s first to feature seven-nanometre transistor technology, which should aid energy efficiency and computation speeds.

Its inclusion means the iPhone XS will last about 30 minutes longer on a battery charge than the X, Apple suggested.

The firm also said that its Face ID system would now work faster than before and it demoed several apps, showing off its augmented reality prowess.

Huawei recently announced it had developed a rival 7nm mobile chip of its own.

Rumours had us expecting at least one of the new iPhones would feature three rear cameras like Huawei’s P20 Pro. However, Apple has stuck with two 12 megapixel lenses for the XS and XS Max. The XR only has one rear camera.

Apple did unveil a new feature that will allow users to alter the depth-of-field of their photos after they have been taken. The new application effectively changes the degree to which the background is blurred. Real-time preview in Depth Control will be available via a free software update later this Autumn.

Dual SIM

The XS and XS Max also introduce support for two mobile contracts. In most countries, this will be via a physical Sim card in addition to an electronic eSim, which can be activated via a QR code among other means. Dual SIM support will be available via a free software update later this Autumn.

The version sold to Chinese consumers, however, will require two physical SIM cards to achieve this.

iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are splash-, water- and dust-resistant. The devices were tested under controlled laboratory conditions with a rating of IP68 under IEC standard 60529 (maximum depth of 2 meters up to 30 minutes).

Health Watch

apple watch 4

Earlier at its California event, Apple unveiled a new smartwatch. The Cupertino company has refreshed the timepiece with a display that extends further towards its edges than earlier models.

The firm said the Watch Series 4’s usable screen was more than 30% larger despite the device itself having similar dimensions to its predecessor.

This allows more information and shortcuts to be shown at once.

It can also display electrocardiogram heart waveforms for the first time. This works via new sensors in its back and crown to allow owners to check if their heart has an irregular rhythm.

Also, the watch will automatically warn its user if it detects their heart is beating abnormally fast or slow during everyday use.

A new fall-detection facility also debuts thanks to the introduction of “next-generation” gyroscope and accelerometer sensors.

If the associated software believes the user has suffered a hard fall and remained immobile for a minute or more, it will send the emergency services an alert including the user’s location, as well as contacting chosen friends or family if set to do so.

The cellular 40mm version of the Watch Series 4 begins at £499 and the 44mm at £529.

That marks an increase on the 38mm and 42mm Series 3 equivalents, which respectively cost £359 and £429.

Apple also confirmed that the next version of its mobile operating system – iOS 12 – will be released for existing devices on 17 September.

marantz KI Ruby signatureMarantz has announced a slew if new Heos multiroom-packing AV receivers. Additionally, they took the wraps off the KI Ruby separates.

Marantz certainly is offering something for everyone. From their AirPlay 2 compatible receivers right up to the limited edition stereo amplifier and CD player.

Marantz AirPlay 2

marantzAlong with stablemates, Denon, Marantz has given their latest networked receivers the ability to use Apple’s latest audio casting technology. As well as the update coming to brand new receivers, 2017 and 2018’s existing line of networked receivers will also make the jump to AirPlay 2 thanks to an over the air update.

AirPlay 2 lets Apple fans cast music from their iOS and Mac devices to wireless connected speakers. Also, they are able to control them with Siri voice commands as well as grouping selections of devices together for multi-room audio.

Following the announcement of their latest slimline NR AV receiver line, the 5.1 NR1509 and Dolby Atmos 5.1.2 NR1609, the audio outfit confirmed additional models.

There is the seven channel SR5013 as well as two nine channel receivers. The nine channel versions, the SR6013 and SR7013, both boast Dolby Atmos, DTS X and Auro 3D support.

The SR5013 has a 7x 180W power plant using HDAM topology, and seven HDMI inputs with twin outputs.

Due October, both the SR6013 and SR7013 add Auro 3D compatibility to the codec mix. The former is rated at 9x 185W per channel, and the SR7013, at 200W per channel.

Both have seven rear mounted HDMI inputs (compatible with HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision), with the SR7013 boasting three outputs.

Marantz will round off the year with the eleven channel SR8012 and AV7705 multi-channel pre-amp.

KI Ruby

Marantz KI RubyMarantz brand ambassador, Ken Ishiwata, has been on a quest that’s stretched for almost 40 years. He has searched for the way to make his CDs sound the best that they possibly can when played though his system.

The world-famous audio specialist worked on Marantz’s first ever CD player in 1982, the CD-63. So, to mark his 40th anniversary with the company, Ishiwata has been working on something very special indeed. The result is the KI Ruby set.

The KI Ruby system consists of a Super Audio CD (SACD) player with DAC (Digital Analogue Converter) called the SA-KI Ruby, and an integrated amplifier dubbed the PM-KI Ruby.

The amp is a discrete 2-stage job powering a pre-amp and power amp separately. Utilising Marantz HDAM circuit tech, the circuit line is as short as possible in order to reduce signal noise through the amp. The amp will push 100W per channel for 8ohm speakers, or 200W per channel if you’re pairing the PM-KI Ruby with 4ohm speakers.

The SA-KI Ruby uses the DNA from the Marantz flagship SA-10. To this they employ a disc mechanism built from the ground up with audio in mind.

Called the SACDM-3, it’s just as happy with compiled Super Audio CD, CD-ROM and DVD audio discs as it is with your regular CDs. It will even play back music from a USB input.

Handling file formats including PCM / DXD 384KHz / 32bit and DSD11.2MHz, it upscales (upconverts?) all file formats to DSD, with a 1-bit conversion method returning the feed to the analogue outputs.

It all must sound very tasty.

The limited edition (500 units per territory) KI Ruby audiophile line are engraved with Ken Ishiwata’s signature. Early system pre-orders will also ship with matching serial numbers.

Price and availability

Both the PM-KI Ruby and the SA-KI Ruby will cost £3,500 a piece, with the rarity of the KI-Ruby set to make it a highly sought after bit of kit.

Prices for the A/V receivers:

  • SR5013 – £850
  • SR6013 – £1,249
  • SR7013 – £1,749
  • SR8012 – £2699
  • AV7705 – £1899

We all know how secretive Apple is regarding unreleased products. Unfortunately, the daughter of one of the company’s engineers overshared the iPhone X. This resulted in daddy being on the job line.

Last week a hands-on video of the new iPhone X landed on YouTube.

Naturally, hungry Apple-fans lapped this up and the video went viral.

The poster, Brooke Peterson, was proudly showing off her father’s iPhone X. Dad just happens to have been an engineer at Apple and the video was shot actually in Apple’s campus cafe. Notice the past-tense for poor old Mr Peterson’s employment.

The video was swiftly removed from YouTube a few hours after it had been posted, this was apparently at the request of Apple.

Since then, Brooke as posted up a new video regarding the iPhone X.

Latest video

iphone xIn the latest video she reveals that he father has apparently now been fired by Apple. However, it seems that it wasn’t actually for flashing his iPhone X.
[youtube id=”XQzGKwjr_js”]
The handset was an Apple employee iPhone which featured sensitive information on it.

This apparently included some code names for future Apple products. It also features Apple employee specific QR codes.

So, it looks like the reason that he was fired from Apple was due to the sensitive information on the handset was shown in the video.

This makes more sense as we have seen hands on videos of the new iPhone from Apple’s press event, so the handset is no longer a secret.

iPhone X price and availability

Apple’s iPhone X launches this Friday the November 3rd. The device is sure to be hugely popular with online orders shipping in December.

It looks like demand for the handset is also going to be high at the Apple Store as well. It seems that not even its eyewatering price will slow things down. But, the proof of the pudding…

Check out Vodafone, Carphone Warehouse and all the other usual suspects for pricing.

iphone 7 plus matteblackIt sounds like the Apple flagship iPhone 7 Plus is having camera difficulties. The only fix is to see if Apple will give you a new phone.

Word is coming in that the dual-camera iPhone 7 Plus is having issues.

Redditors are reporting that their iPhones are “dying”.

iPhone 7 Plus are dying

The problem seems to be connected with Apple’s camera app – or any third party camera app, for that matter.

iphone7 plus black 2016What is happening is that upon opening up a camera app users are faced with a black screen. That, or purple or green-tinged image. Some are even getting an “emergency” prompt that shuts the iPhone off for being too warm — even though it has not gone through a major change in temperature.

Cause

One likely explanation comes from Redditor eyesee.

Good news

There is a glimmer of silver in those Apple-shaped clouds though.

So far, all those who have taken this issue up with the Apple Store Genius Bars have been looked after. They have been told that this problem lies with hardware and those with the issue(s) may warrant a replacement iPhone 7 Plus. Yeah, it’s a pain but at least it’s an alternative to not using the camera.

thunderbolt display

thunderbolt displayIf you want super high res from Apple you have the choice of a 5K res iMac, which has been available since 2014, or even a 4K one. So, why would anyone spend £899 on a 1440p Thunderbolt Display? Well, it seems Apple is finally asking the same question.

That’s right Apple fans, it looks like the fruity ones are gearing up for a Thunderbolt Display refresh.

Retailers are starting to show limited stock of the five-year-old monitor, and 9to5Mac’s sources claim that a much-improved standalone option is coming soon. Furthermore, it is suggested that this new monitor will be packing 5K resolution, pumping out a mighty 5120 x 2880 pixels of ultra-crisp peeper-pleasure. That’s not all though – there could well be a twist.

According to the report, Apple intends to integrate a GPU directly into the monitor itself, which would provide the graphics-pumping power from within.

“But why?” I hear you ask. Well, 5K resolution requires quite a bit of GPU grunt for it to run smoothly and at a decent rate – something that Apple’s skinny MacBooks might have trouble in doing for any length of time if hooked up to a 27-inch monitor.

Some Apple cunning might make this work though. If they shoved a graphics card inside the monitor, this could overrule the one in the computer, as and when needed. This would also fall nicely with an update in the forthcoming OS X 10.12 (or MacOS, as is it’s rumoured to be dubbed) which would allow for this seamless pairing.

imacSo, whichever card is the more powerful will be the one used, with the other likely made inactive during use of the monitor. I guess, they could use the clevers and use the lesser one if it’s only displaying text such as your Twitter feed on your MacBook screen whilst something more major is happening on the Thunderbolt Display.

Now we all know Apple well enough to also know that this will more than likely mean a considerable price hike for the new 5K monitor. This also will mean that Apple can continue to sell compatible laptops without having to have them sport top-tier GPUs inside – which could save (them) some money on that end of things.

9to5Mac suggests that only new Macs may be able to run at the full 5K resolution, however, with older Macs displaying at lower resolution settings.

Given the thinning stock of the old Thunderbolt Display at retail stores, a WWDC reveal this month is suggested – so if you’re planning to buy a Mac monitor, maybe wait a couple weeks and see what happens.

macbook 12 2016Apple has released a new range of 12-inch Retina MacBooks, the new models get updated processor as well as the introduction of the popular Rose Gold colour option.

The new 12-inch Retina MacBooks come with the latest Intel processors, improved graphics, faster storage and also an improved battery that give an extra hour of usage.

The lineup means Apple now offers the MacBook in the same colours as its iOS devices – Space Grey, Silver, Gold, and Rose Gold.

For the 13-inch MacBook Air, Apple has also made 8 GB RAM the standard spec across every configuration.

The new MacBooks get the sixth-generation dual-core Intel Core M processors up to 1.3 GHz, with Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.1 GHz, and faster 1866 MHz memory.

macbook 12 2016 laptop 2016 spreadNew Intel HD Graphics 515 deliver up to 25% percent faster graphics performance, and faster PCIe-based flash storage makes everyday tasks feel snappier — from launching apps to opening files. And now with up to 10 hours of wireless web browsing and up to 11 hours of iTunes movie playback.

The USB-C port appears identical and does not support Thunderbolt 3 as some rumours had suggested.

Apple’s UK site is not yet displaying prices but I am sure those will appear soon.

You get the option of a pair of configurations. In the US, if you spend $1299 you can get a Retina MacBook with a 1.1 GHz processor, 8 GB of memory and 256 GB storage. Throw down another $300 and this gets you a faster processor and 512 GB of flash memory.

MacBook is the thinnest and lightest Mac we have ever made and it’s our vision for the future of the notebook,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Customers are going to love this update to MacBook, with the latest processors, faster graphics, faster flash storage, longer battery life and a beautiful rose gold finish.”

You can find out more details about the 2016 range of 12-inch Retina MacBook’s over at Apple. UK prices should appear soonish.

If you happen to own one of the super-slender edition MacBooks released last year, then it would be very wise to check its charging cable.

According to its web post the Apple MacBook USB-C cables that were included with its MacBooks in 2015 need to be recalled because they “may fail due to a design issue.”

Apple will swap any recalled cables for a new redesigned one free of charge.

If your MacBook was registered with an address when you bought it, Apple will ship it straight to you by the end of this month. If you didn’t, you’ll have to drop into a store or request a new cable online.

Things seem to be getting sloppy over at Apple as last month they had to recall a bunch of AC wall plug adapters from Continental Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Argentina, and Brazil.

Here’s the Apple support page for the USB-C cable alert.

iPhone 7 modem rumour

iPhone 7 modem rumouriPhone 7 could well be loaded with a super-speedy modem which will enable it download movies in seconds over a wireless LTE connection.

News has landed that, if Apple chooses to put Qualcomm’s new modem in the iPhone 7, it will be able to perform amazing feats of downloading not before seen from a smartphone.

Qualcomm has provided the modem for the iPhone for a number of years and has just announced a new model that would let users get speeds that are 500 per cent faster than 3G.

The Snapdragon X16 LTE modem, as it is known, is capable of download speeds up to 1Gbps, a huge boost on what is capable today, but without the need to drastically enhance the network infrastructure.

This all means that users who have the modem in their phone and are on a network capable of delivering those speeds can have instant access to the cloud as if it was on the device, play 360 video instantly, and be able to make even crisper and clearer video calls.

The US, Korea, and India will be some of the first countries to benefit from the speeds, and the UK will be joining in very soon as EE is rumoured to be trialling a 1Gbps network in London before the end of 2016.

iphone 7 modem newsAccording to Pocket-lint this tech will not only be on display at MWC 2016 but should be shoved in the first commercial devices by the second half of 2016.

However, you might have to wait a couple of years before the modem and the ability to connect at those speeds to be anywhere near common.

Naturally, Qualcomm isn’t ready to confirm whether or not the modem will make it into the iPhone 7. They have said that the company is working with a number of partners, and that you can expect to see this new 1Gbps capable modem in range of different devices.

Will this be something you keep in mind when buying your next smartphone?
