Free Wi-Fi Coming to London’s more Affluent Areas
If you happen to be fortunate enough to live within the borders of Westminster City Council or the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea then paying for Wi-Fi will soon be a thing of the past thanks to O2.
O2 has struck a deal and is now in the process of rolling out a massive free Wi-Fi zone across the London boroughs of Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea and will run at “no cost to the councils or the taxpayer” according to the service provider.
A Metro wireless network, which will become the largest free Wi-Fi zone in Europe will be installed on street furniture – I’m guessing that means lampposts and bollards and not historical monuments.
The release does not mention a completion date but the installation begins this month and O2 has said the network will be predictably ready in time for the London Olympics.
Boris ‘London mayor’ Johnson has said the Olympics will place ‘maximum strain’ on phone networks thanks to the expected Tweeting, FB updating and Google mapping – so, why isn’t O2 bringing the free Wi-Fi love to East London?
To be fair – I’m sure the amount of visitors to these areas, especially Westminster, will make this scheme worthwhile 🙂
