The COTODAMA Lyric speaker brings something totally new to speaker design.

I have just been contacted to be told about a new speaker from Japanese company COTODAMA.

Their Lyric speaker is aptly named as, when you play a song, the speaker displays the lyrics. Not in a tacky karaoke way though – the display matches the mood of the track.

First released in Japan last year, the COTODAMA Lyric Speaker features a minimal-looking housing made of translucent TFT LCD panels sandwiched between acrylic.

There are two speakers on the front with a volume knob, and a circular disc on the back. The latter actually houses a computer generating the displayed lyrics and graphics.

Furthermore, these are all handmade in Japan. Only 15 COTODAMA speakers are produced each month.

When music plays on the speaker, the back panel turns a milky white, and the front displays animated lyrics.

The speaker’s technology is linked with SyncPower Corporation (PetitLyrics), Japan’s largest lyrics database.

Once the system recognises a song, it analyses the mood. Through its “expression engine” it then chooses suitable fonts and animations accordingly.

So, for instance, a slow love song, might produce a scene with delicate lettering drifting across the speaker. If no lyrics are found, or you play an instrumental, the speaker then shows abstract graphics that animate in sync with the music.

Performance

The speaker can play 96khz/24bit FLAC files and has a range of 40Hz to 40kHz.

The case is fitted with two coaxial loudspeakers and two drone cones.

App

Well, of course, the speaker has an app to control it, which strangely only supports Wi-Fi and not Bluetooth.

However, I cannot see this being a dealbreaker as I very much doubt you’ll be carrying this speaker around with you.

If you’re using Android, only the Lyric Speaker app and Spotify are compatible, but the iOS version also supports Apple Music, Deezer, Google Play, SoundCloud, Youtube, and other services.
