Android 4.4 KitKat brings new Location mode

Google is expected to launch Android 4.4 Kit Kat later this month, the latest version of Google’s mobile OS is expected to launch with the new Google Nexus 5.

Word is that Google is expected to launch the Google Nexus 5 on October 14th with the handset going on sale by the end of the month.

With that comes more information about Android 4.4 KitKat.

According to Android Police, Android 4.4 Kit Kat will come with new location settings, and the location settings screen in the OS will change its name to being just called ‘Location’.

That’s not very exciting, true, but as well as the name change there will be three different location modes that can be selected depending on your preferences.

The first new mode will be High Accuracy. This setting will include GPS, WiFi and your mobile network.

Tthe second setting will be Battery Saving. The Battery Saving setting will use networks and WiFi with the third mode using Device sensors only. This will basically just use the GPS on your Android device.

There will also be a new location history, which will show you which applications have been accessing your location services. This could be useful for battery saving, as you will be able to turn off services that are using location settings that you don’t need and also let you know which services are tracking you and you didn’t know 😉

There’s still no official date from Google as to when Android 4.4 Kit Kat will be released but it will be some time this month – not sure that the same can be said for the Nexus Gem smartwatch, though.
