Corsair Flash Voyager GTX SSD USB hybrid flash drive

I generally carry around at least one decently sized flash drive. But Corsair have just blown the current crop of USB sticks right out of the water with their Flash Voyager GTX.

Corsair has basically performed a  mash-up of SSD (solid state drive) and USB stick at Computex with their announcement of the Flash Voyager GTX USB Flash Drive — a flash drive that is, for all intents and purposes, a modern SSD in an ultra-portable flash drive package.

Corsair states that the Flash Voyager GTX offers 450MB/sec read and 350MB/sec write times which, on paper, puts it nearly on a par with the SSDs found in PCs.

The tech inside the drive mirrors SSDs as well with support for TRIM, which improves performance over time by telling the drive when blocks of data can be erased or consolidated, along with USB Attached SCSI and SMART monitoring technology to keep an eye on the storage’s health. Basically, all the good stuff.

As well as all the speed and the smarts there’s also SSD space. The Flash Voyager GTX will land in 128GB and 256GB versions which will cost around $120 and $200, respectively – so the price kinda follows the SSD flavour too then.

This all means that there’s nothing stopping you whacking on a full operating system and/or PC games to carry around in your pocket. Although, the most likely use for the Corsair Flash Voyager GTX is simply going to be to boost the storage capabilities of your PC without having to get inside it or shoving an external drive on your desk.

Corsair’s Flash Voyager GTX supports USB 3.0 and 2.0, and plays fine with Windows, Linux, and OS X alike. The street date for this mini marvel is set for July and will come with a five-year warranty.
