Skullcandy HESH 3 WIRELESS reviewWe have had various bits from Skullcandy and recently we were sent a set of their Hesh 3 Wireless headphones to check out.

Last year we tested the Hesh 2 Wireless headphones. We liked how understated the design was and their build quality.

The question is, has Skullcandy built upon those good points or have they made a right Hesh of it?

Skullcandy Hesh 3 design

hesh 3 wireless stoodWell, I thought the Hesh 2 were understated. It looks like the Hesh 3 were sent to the Ninja school of design, especially the black set we were sent. I do really approve of the new squared-off look to these headphones. Last year’s model was quite… bulbous. This year it appears that the Hesh have grown up a little.

However, there is very little to tell you that these are Skullcandy cans.

The headphones are constructed with soft-touch plastic. This gives them an enticingly tactile edge. Furthermore, the finish resists fingerprints, unlike the chrome badging of the previous incarnation.

hesh 3 wireless foldedRegarding the logo, you really have to catch it in the right light, but it is there.

Comfort is brought to you by deeply cushioned faux-leather ear pads. There is also ample padding on the headband too.

hesh 3 wireless ports and controlAll of the headphone’s controls are located on the right earcup. There are only three buttons to control volume, playback and power. Double tapping the middle button will active your voice assistant, like Siri or Google Assistant.

The right earcup also houses the 3.5mm jack for listening in wired mode if the battery runs out. Speaking of batteries, charging is done via a microUSB connector and the headphones support rapid charging.

This means you can get 4 hours of playback with just 10 minutes of charge.

Finally, to round-up the headphone’s design features, they are able to fold flat or up for easy transport. They don’t come bundled with a carrying case but the review pair we’ve been living with look none the worse for wear.

Skullcandy Hesh 3 performance

[amazon_link asins=’B075749KHR’ template=’ProductAd’ store=’gadgnews-21′ marketplace=’UK’ link_id=”]Skullcandy states that the Hesh 3 packs an integrated analog (sic) amplifier that pushes a pair of high-quality 40mm audio drivers.

I have to admit, there’s a lot of good things to be said for their sound quality.

Comfort

The Hesh 3 are very comfortable to wear. The memory foam earpads are deep and supple. There is also a decent amount of clamping force, which I like.

Sometimes head-hugging headphones can be painful for those, like me, who have to wear glasses. I did not find such a problem with these Skullcandy cans at all.

Additionally, the pads do an excellent job at blocking out ambient noise without the need for active noise cancellation. Thanks to their good seal, the headphones block out an impressive amount of noise and offers a nice side order of bass.

The multi-fold hinges not only enable easy stowage but also allow the headphones to sit perfectly on the ears.

hesh 3 wireless standingSound quality

In terms of sound, Skullcandy’s love of the low-end is still alive and well in the Hesh 3.

Bass is punchy with impact but, especially with rock or orchestral pieces, has a tendency to bleed into the mids. This can muddy the waters a bit and also send vocals behind the action. Personally, I would of preferred the bass to extend further in the the sub band and stop meddling with the low mids.

Electronica, dance, and rap music is handled better than Handel, though.

The mids are nicely sorted. The low-mids dish out enough warmth to round out soulful basslines and vocals. The high-mids have presence but a nudge on the EQ could have given vocals and guitars more of an edge.

The high frequencies are exciting without being too bright. Crisp and clear cymbals, and enough sibilance to give vocals character. The treble also goes some way of balancing out that bass favouritsm.

hesh 3 wireless cups

All that said, if you are looking for a delicate touch and a masterclass in placement and timbre, then there other avenues and price points to explore.

Stamina

The Skullcandy Hesh 3 can go for an impressive 22 hours on a charge. Moreover, they are also equipped with rapid charging.

This means that from a mere 10 minutes charge you are repaid with 4 hours of playback. Now, that’s an exchange rate I can get behind.

Skullcandy Hesh 3 Wireless review conclusion

I really like the Hesh 3’s minimalist design, rapid charging and comfort. They are lightweight and fold up to a really compact size when not being used.

Those deep ear pads provide good isolation as well as accommodating spectacle wearers with that snug fit.

Sound quality is good for the price but the bass definitely dominates here. The Hesh 3 are more your fun-loving party goers than hyper-critical audiophile. However, I found these just the ticket on the daily commutes.

Skullcandy Hesh 3 price and availability

You can buy the Hesh 3 Wireless right now for £99.99 from Amazon.

skullcandy hesh 3 colours inlineThe Hesh 3 come in four colours: black, blue, red and grey.

urbanista berlin review

urbanista berlin earpodsWe’ve have a couple of offerings from the Urbanista stable to review. The Berlin earphones and Seattle headphones. How do they stack up?

Our review of the Seattle wireless cans will appear soon but here I’ll hand over to Mr Webb for his opinions of the Berlin earphones.  Jay

I usually favour wired earphones but when I was asked to test the Berlins, I was intrigued.

The packaging looked slick and the earphones looked a little Apple EarPod-like.

Urbinista Berlin design

All the earphones I have had follow the usual earphone design. That is a tip goes in your ear and the driver(s) is held in a cylindrical housing of either metal or plastic. All standard stuff.

The Urbanista Berlin requires you to put the plastic driver pod in your ear.

Around the pod is a thin sheath of silicone that wraps around the earpiece.

urbanista berlin reviewOn the back there’s a little flap that covers the battery-charging micro-USB port, and you’ll get around four hours’ use between charges. This is pretty poor for a pair of headphones such as this; it’s closer to the stamina you get from wireless earphones that are true cable-free earpieces. Perhaps it won’t be a huge issue if you’ll use the Urbanista Berlin exclusively for the gym or for running.

The Urbanista Berlin earphones are available in black, white, or a pair of two-tone finishes with white earpieces and pink or turquoise cable-plus-highlights.

Urbanista Berlin performance

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the Bluetooth experience with these earphones. Cheap buds tend to be prone to frequency break-ups in signal. This can be triggered by anything from minor interference or just by moving around. Not so the Urbanista.

Battery life checked in at about 4 hours, which is good. I found them to be nice and light as well as very convenient.

Comfort and fit

I do not consider myself to have pretty large ear holes but, I found them both uncomfortable and that they wouldn’t stay in.

urbanista berlin controlsWhen I did get them to stay put the controls would pull the right-side pod loose. Most annoying, especially when it happens when you’re hands are full.

This less than perfect seal also means that isolation isn’t great.

Sound quality

The lack of isolation also has a detrimental effect on the sound. The high and high mid ranges are pretty weak. The low mids are OK but the low range would certainly have been improved with a good seal.

I found the stereo image narrow, even for earphones.

Urbanista Berlin review conclusion

The Urbanista Berlin look impressive and are well packaged. Unfortunately, they’re not that comfortable and their sound quality is fairly poor.

Battery life is decent but not outstanding.

If you’re looking for some fitness earphones, perhaps spend a little more money and grab some Skullcandy XTfree buds.

Urbanista Berlin price and availability

You can purchase the Berlin earphones direct from Urbanista for €39.99.

method wireless tidy

skullcandy method wireless sport reviewAh, January. How many of you have joined a gym or resolved to exercise more than your gaming chair this year? Well, the Skullcandy Method Wireless Sport may well help you through your promised fitness regime.

The Skullcandy Method Wireless Sport earphones are, as you have no doubt already worked out, are Bluetooth earphones designed for sporty types.

The have the now familiar collar design (remember the VerveRider+ earphones?) so that you don’t loose your buds when you take them out of your lugholes.

Reading the copy on the Skullcandy site, these have been designed with getting active in mind. How do they hold up though? It’s that gadgety review time again folks!

Method Wireless Sport design

As mentioned, these earbuds come tethered to a ‘FlexSport’ collar. This collar lightly hugs your neck whilst also sporting all the controls and whatnot.

method wireless controlsAll the action happens on the left side of the collar. Here you have the multifunctional Skull button. This works as power on/off, start/stop as well as call answering and hang-up.

This is flanked by + and – buttons which takes care of the volume and track skipping duties.

method wireless recharging usbAt the end of this arm you’ll find the USB charging port. There are also microphone slots for your hands-free calling.

method wireless tidyAlong the top of the collar is a recess for the earphone cables. This is a pretty neat cable tidy for when you’re not using the Method earbuds. At least this should prevent any nasty tangled messes when you need to wear them again. Not only that, but if you don’t need all the cable for the buds to reach your ears, just take out what you need.

method wireless tidy budsAt the business end of the buds you get a choice of some small or medium tips. These sport Skullcandy’s ‘Dual Lock’ fit. This comprises of their special ‘Sticky Gels’, as seen on the XTfree, which are specially shaped to stay put.

The earphone housing is also sweat-resistant. In fact, the whole unit is protected by the ‘Pureclean’ system because who wants to smell their previous workout?

Method Wireless performance

So, the Skullcandy Sport Method Wireless earbuds are water and sweat resistant. The earphones are attached to the ‘Flexsport’ collar by 3 feet of cable.

These will stay paired to your device up to 30-feet away so no need to carry your phone around the gym with you from station-to-station.

Skullcandy claim up to 9 hours playtime from a single charge and I would say I have been getting around that.

Sound quality

Sound quality is pretty much what I have come to expect from Skullcandy now.

method wireless budsOverall it’s fairly balanced, albeit with that slight lean to low mids.

At first I thought the bass was distorting on more low-biased tracks but this rectified itself after a few hours of playing. This was either the buds getting settled or I had them pushed in too far.

Whatever the reason, the bass is certainly there and the Methods proved to be equally adept with any genre I threw at them.

Dave Lombardo’s double-kick thumps convincingly in Slayer’s ‘Angel of Death’ whereas the panned toms in ‘Children of the Grave’ by Black Sabbath really do cut through.

Electronic music is handled well too with Boris Blank, Jean-Michel Jarre and Kraftwerk being really enjoyable and immersive to listen to.

These might not be banging enough for you bass-hunters out there though. They offer a more even-handed reproduction.

Comfort and fit

What’s impressive about the Skullcandy Sport Method Wireless earbuds is the fit. Because of that, they also provide a good level of isolation.

The earbuds don’t fall out of your ears and they are nice and soft.

One of the major advantages of these collar-style Bluetooth earphones is that the weight is distributed throughout the device.

method wireless rainbow budsThis enables them to have a much longer battery life than, say, the XTfree without compromising comfort and the buds staying put.

My only niggle with these collar-style earphones is when I have my hair down. Granted, if I was working out I’d have it tied up so this would not be an issue. However, wearing these on the commute with a collared shirt and long hair to feed it under/around, can be fiddly. Well, more fiddly than simply plonking on a headset or shoving in some buds.

Method Wireless Sport review conclusion

Skullcandy Sport Method Wireless earbuds are great if you’re after earphones to wear in the gym or on the track. They might not satisfy the bassheads out there but they have decent reproduction.

Add in 9 hours of battery life from a 30 minute charge, and buds that won’t fly out when they feel like it, that’s more reasons to check these out.

Method Wireless Sport price and availability

You can buy the Method Wireless Sport direct from Skullcandy’s portal for £45.

They are available in blue (as reviewed) or black with the funky earbud tips.

skullcandy-crusher-wireless-ports-and-controls

skullcandy-crusher-wireless-headSkullcandy looks to be going through its range and removing cables. We have already been impressed by the Grind Wireless. Now, the company has untethered its Crusher cans. These had the odd unique selling point of ‘haptic bass’. Now, I know you need to know more.

Skullcandy Crusher Wireless promises to give you bone rattling bass. That kind of bass that you expect to get from a live gig, great cinema or a car with a rather loud sound system.

All that in some headphones? This should be interesting.

Skullcandy Crusher design

As they did with the Hesh Wireless, Skullcandy have gone for a more understated design than usual. The Crusher cans I have been sent are matte black.

There is a discrete Skullcandy logo on the headband just above the ear casings. The logos have come out a little more pronounced in the snaps. In real life the grey seems to fade more in to the design.

skullcandy-crusher-wireless-sideThe ear cups, pads, and headband are otherwise free of embellishment. Personally, I think this gives the Crusher Wireless an effortless style. Besides, these will not clash with whatever you’re wearing. Should you care about such things.

Controls

The controls are located on the ear cups. The main ones are on the right side. Here you have control over volume, playback and there’s a centralised multi-function button. There’s also a built-in mic so you can make and receive phone calls easily without skipping a beat.

skullcandy-crusher-wireless-ports-and-controlsOver on the left hand side is a slider that controls that haptic bass craziness as well as the USB and audio jack ports.

The headphones fold up nice and compact. This enables them to slip easily in to the bundled travel bag for even more protection on the go.

crusher-bundleMaterials

The plastics used for the Crusher all appear to be good quality. The hinges are sturdy and metal, as is the adjustable headband.

The earcup backs have a nice soft finish on them. The top of the headband is leatherette, and the underside is nicely padded rubber. There is even a neat little cutout to help prevent a hotspot forming on the top of your head.

The buttons are good and sturdy and feel like they’ll last.

The overall look is classy and subtle.

Skullcandy Crusher performance

Comfort and isolation

The earpads of the Crusher Wireless are very comfortable indeed.

The pads are oval in shape and covered in a soft leatherette. The interior of the pads are of a decent-quality cloth. This helps to prevent sweaty and over-heated lobes.

The padding is memory foam. Even with the clamping force of the headphones being on the firm side, the pads stay comfortable for long listening sessions.

skullcandy-crusher-wireless-earpad-and-buttons-detailAnother benefit of the memory foam is that these cans are able mold to your face no matter what the shape.

The snug fit even contributes to the overall sound quality.

skullcandy-crusher-wireless-hinge-and-logo

The headphones tip the scales at only 1.5 lbs, so quite lightweight.

Isolation is darned fine too. Using these during the commute on noisy underground and overground (Wombling free) trains, I can easily block out the world.

In the office at lunchtime, I can ignore the phones and general hubbub of my colleagues.

Sound quality

The unusual thing about the Crusher Wireless is that sound quality needs to be broken down in to two acts.

Act 1 – without haptic bass

Without the bass slider engaged, the Crusher presents a lovely, slightly warm sound.

I was impressed by the level of detail throughout the frequency range.

The sound-stage is reasonably wide for closed-backed Bluetooth cans.

Bass is definitely present but not overpowering with the slider all the way down. Treble and mids are detailed without any graininess or fatigue-inducing shine.

I dare say that you could use them like this and be suitably happy with their sound quality.

But, should you want a sub-woofer strapped to your head…

Act 2 – monster bass

Each ear cup contains one of Skullcandy’s in-house designed 40mm drivers, as well as a second 34mm driver that kicks in when you use the bass slider.

For all intents and purposes, I believe that the slider controls a crossover system, just as you’d feed a subwoofer in a home theater or car audio system.

As you push the slider up, the bass frequencies slowly transfer from the main drivers to these bass-specific drivers.

skullcandy-crusher-wireless-foldedBoom!

If you’ve ever stood next to the speaker stack at a big gig or club, or sat in a car that’s more speaker than vehicle, that’s the bass you get here.

The bass that the haptic drivers produce is intense – as well as a tad ridiculous.

I have to admit, for the most part, the extra bass is controlled and punchy. It can get a bit messy on some tracks but I think bass hunters will love it.

The Crusher’s box states “Bass You Can Feel,” and it’s true. Especially when cranked all the way. You really do get that sub feeling.

It’s not just club classics that this bass works on either. ‘A History of Bad Men’ by the Melvins and ‘Tree of Suffocating Souls’ by Triptykon both gave my lugs a hilarious work out.

Hit or gimmick

For me, I found the sweet spot to be around just below half-way for the slider.

This presents you with the more nuanced bass texture from the main driver, bolstered by the sub thump of the secondary system.

The haptic bass actually seemed to come in to its own when watching movies or gaming. I have a soundbar and sub in my living-room and the Crushers are a bit like a portable version of that.

To my mind, this is where you need truly immersive bass that you can physically feel.

Stamina

The battery life is rated at 40 hours. That is very impressive, especially given their weight and price. I’ve used them all week and they are still going strong.

Bluetooth range is decent enough. It works perfectly at usual listening and viewing distances. I don’t really need more than 30 feet range.

Pairing is as fuss-free as expected.

What is really neat is that the haptic bass drivers are not active. This means if you decide to use the bundled cable to attach these cans to your sound source, you still get that banging bass.

The inline mic and button on the cable worked with my tablet and phone.

Skullcandy Crusher Wireless review conclusion

These really do sound good and are priced pretty keenly.

Given the option of these or some Beats cans, I’d probably plump for the Crushers. They perform well and that haptic bass feature is definitely a new one on me.

Granted, I would not have the slider pushed up to insanity levels, but that extra low-end for films and gaming is a bonus.

Add in to that their build-quality and stealthy looks, who wouldn’t want to wear a 2.1 system on their ears?
