HTC to unveil wearable tech this year

htc-watch-hasan-kaymakWearable technology is this year’s buzz word and with earlier rumours hinting at HTC working on a smartwatch a recent statement points to a reveal happening this year.

HTC’s Chairwoman Cher Wang has just told Bloomberg that the company plans to unveil a wearable device in time for Christmas this year, along with an improved focus on marketing tactics.

“Many years ago we started looking at smartwatches and wearables, but we believe that we really have to solve the battery problems and the LCD light problems,” she said in the interview. “These are customer-centric problems.”

Last year didn’t turn out to be a very good year for the Taiwanese OEM despite the launch of the HTC One – a firm favourite with many people including yours truly.

HTC CFO Chang Chialin says, “we feel positive and optimistic about 2014 when compared to 2013.”

In addition to sharing plans about launching a wearable device by the end of 2014, Wang said the Taiwanese tech maker plans to renew its marketing tactics this year, although they did kick off with last year’s huge and amusing marketing campaign featuring Robert Downey Jr.

“To tell the truth, we never think marketing is that important — this is really not very good,” says Wang.

HTC is also expected to unveil the successor of the HTC One will see the daylight in March, and will probably feature dual-camera sensors on the back as seen in these pictures.
