Samsung Galaxy Glass smart glasses to use your fingers as AR keyboard
Samsung appears to be working on an augmented reality (AR) keyboard that virtually projects letters onto a user’s fingers for typing. This not only reveals a new input method but is proof that Samsung is working on a set of Galaxy Glass smart glasses.
Samsung’s plans to launch Galaxy Glass smart glasses was mentioned by Korea Times earlier in the year but these latest pictures showing the device’s proposed augmented reality finger keyboard add substantial weight to Sammy’s special spec’s existence.
The patent was filed by Samsung last August at the World Intellectual Property Organisation and has only just been made public.
Samsung stated in the patent that it sees voice controls for smart glasses as being limited.
In loud situations it can be inaccurate and in quieter environments it’s not private enough. Samsung also said projected keyboards are an unrealistic option owing to the cost of implementing beam projectors. The result is the augmented reality keyboard.
As you can see in the patent pictures, letters will be projected onto the fingers of a hand, only seen by the smart glasses wearer. Using the thumb it will be possible to “type” out letters that are recognised by the glasses. While this looks like a good idea we’d imagine implementation with accuracy could be an issue.
Samsung registered a patent for the wearable glasses in October 2013, and has since collaborated with Samsung Display, a display-making affiliate of the main brand, to source displays for the glasses.
“This design is of a type [of glasses] with earphones integrated, allowing [users] to take phone calls and listen to music during workouts,”
The October patent filing revealed that the specs will have the ability to connect with smartphones and display notifications through the eyepiece, and the lens is transparent or translucent.
I wonder if the Samsung Galaxy Gear Glass, or whatever it will be called, will actually appear this year and how it will be different to Google’s own Glass?
