Atari reveals more about Ataribox console

Atari teased audiences at E3 this year with the promise of a “brand new Atari product.” The 20-second clip showed the Ataribox. Now, more details have been released.

The E3 trailer hinted that the Ataribox would be housed in wood like the classic 2600. Other than that, the video game didn’t provided many other details about the console until today.

The email proudly states:

…our objective is to create something new, that stays true to our heritage, while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari.”

As expected, the new Ataribox design has been inspired by the classic woody Atari 2600. and the new console features ribbed lines, a raised back, and a front panel that can either be glass or wood. Indicator lights glow through these materials, and Atari is including SD card support,

Atari has equipped its new gamer with SD card support, a HDMI port, and four USB ports.

Two versions of the Ataribox will be released, one in wood, and one in black / red.

Games

Atari plans to deliver classic games in the Ataribox, alongside “current content.”

Other than republishing Rollercoaster Tycoon, it’s not entirely clear what that current content will be.

However, I think it is safe to assume that the Ataribox will be similar to the NES and SNES Classic and provide access to old titles in modern retro hardware.

While Atari has licensed its brand recently, the company is involved in the creation of the Ataribox.

Hopefully that doesn’t mean Atari is just licensing its brand again for a partner to create and manage the hardware.

It will come as no surprise that Atari isn’t providing any pricing information just yet., release dates, game content, or even full specs right now.
