Sister brands Onkyo and Pioneer have announced a raft of new functions on selected components including MQA support, Amazon Music, and eARC.

Owners of Pioneer and Onkyo products will soon be able to enjoy native support for Amazon Music as well as MQA decoding. Additionally, the companies have integrated eARC on selected A/V receivers. The new features all come by way of the latest firmware update available over your Ethernet connection.

Amazon Music

Prime Music is an on-demand music streaming service available free of charge for Amazon Prime subscribers. The service features a library of about two million tracks. Amazon Music Unlimited, meanwhile, offers a discounted monthly subscription to Amazon Prime members and has tens of millions of songs.

You will be able to access Amazon Music via selected stereo receivers, network audio players, and mini-system receivers. Also, thanks to the firmware update, certain soundbars, AV systems and lifestyle audio products will get the new feature too.

Onkyo TX-8250

MQA

MQA is a way of providing high-quality audio in a backward compatible format. All MQA encoded music is from the most trusted source; the studio master, providing the most accurate form of the artist’s music. MQA-encoded music is available from Onkyo Music in the UK and Germany.

The firmware update will enable MQA decoding on Pioneer’s N-70AE and N-50AE family of Network Audio Players. Additionally, the NC-50 and NC-50 DAB network audio players with a CD player and stereo amplifier built-in will also get the update.

eARC

VSX-LX503

ARC (Audio Return Channel) technology currently supports the transmission of audio signals including LPCM, Dolby Digital, and DTS formats from ARC-compatible TVs or devices connected to the TV.

Now, with the introduction of eARC, systems can transmit HD audio and multi-channel PCM signals from eARC-compatible TVs. Specifically, eARC can transmit object-based audio formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X as well as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio lossless audio formats.

The rollout will initially activate eARC on the 9.2-ch Onkyo TX-RZ830 and Integra DRX-5.2 network A/V receivers. Also, thePioneer 7.2-ch SC-LX502 and 9.2-ch VSX-LX503 A/V receivers.

Audirvana Plus for Windows 10French company Audirvana has just announced a Windows 10 version of their reference hi-fi audio player Audirvana Plus. This new version features a totally redesigned user interface that will change the way PC users enjoy and organise their music.

Created by Damien Plisson and acclaimed by users and audio specialists around the world, Audirvana Plus is the reference player of choice for many Mac-based music fans.

When questioned about creating the Windows 10 version, Plisson told us:

After abandoning Windows for several years, I have to admit that I rediscovered this operating system with great pleasure to create this new product. I always keep in mind the same objective as for the Mac version — to obtain the best possible sound quality.”

The way that Audirvana Plus improves the sound quality is twofold. Firstly, it significantly shortens the audio signal path, and removes all noise and other electromagnetic interferences to deliver pure sound. Secondly, the player employs very high-quality algorithms, far superior to those used in digital-to-analogue converter (DAC) chips. Additionally, it performs the necessary digital processing before conversion to analogue in order to deliver perfect audio fidelity.

New features of Audirvana Plus for Windows 10

Logo - AudirvanaAudirvana Plus for Windows 10 hands you the same benefits as Audirvana Plus 3.2 for Mac. However, it also offers PC users a new, intuitive and fluid interface.

Audirvana Plus - Mini PlayerAdditionally, Audirvana Plus for Windows 10 also offers the latest developments, such as ‘View by Artists’ in addition to View by Tracks and Albums. Further additions include direct selection of the audio device on the main interface, a redesigned search engine, a new mini-player, and a choice of ASIO or WASAPI playback modes.

Audirvana Plus Windows 10Naturally, you still benefit from playback of all popular audio formats. This means that Hi-Res audio files such as FLAC, WAV, AIFF, DSD, and MQA are all good here. There is also integration of Qobuz, Tidal HiFi, and HRA-Streaming streaming services. Finally, there is also compatibility with network players that properly use the UPnP/DLNA standard.

Audirvana Plus for Windows 10 pricing

You can start with a 15-day free trial version and then move to the full version for €64 excluding taxes. Currently, the Beta version of the Windows 10 software is available through the Audirvana forum.

oppo 205

Although we received the sad news that Oppo were ceasing to build their excellent UDP-20x disc players we are happy to announce that the latest firmware release adds some great functionality.

Having owned the UDP-203 and now happily installed the UDP-205 in to my life, it is tinged with sadness. I have had a long relationship with Oppo disc-spinners having also owned the BDP-103.

However, good news for UDP-20x owners; the latest firmware upgrade brings some additional loveliness. I’ve just updated my player through its Ethernet connection.

Oppo UDP-203 and UDP-205 firmware

UDP-203-top-front-hrFirstly, both players now get Dolby Vision “Player-led processing” mode. This is great news for owners who also possess one of the excellent Sony Dolby Vision TVs. Oppo has added “Dolby Vision” mode which can now be found under the HDR Setting menu. This enables the player to convert the output to Dolby Vision when possible.

Additionally, there is a “Dolby Vision Processing” setting, also under the HDR Setting menu. This setting allows you to choose whether Dolby Vision processing is handled mainly by the TV or the UDP-20x player.

UDP-205 and MQA

UDP-205If you happen to own the UDP-205 then great news for lovers of the MQA format. Oppo has now added MQA support via the USB DAC. More information can be found in the “USB DAC Firmware” section on the UDP-205 support page.

Also, there’s an “Up-Sample DAC Input” setting under the Audio Processing menu for the UDP-205.

UDP-205 backThese updates are naturally also joined by general fixes and disc compatibility improvements based on recent and upcoming UHD Blu-ray releases as well as user-submitted samples.

Hopefully Oppo’s support will continue for a while, as promised.

More details can be found on Oppo’s firmware update page.

peex rxPEEX is a brand-new pioneering live music platform. It has been designed to improve the connection between fans and has just now been revealed.

This has piqued (or, PEEXed) my interest as I have been in live bands consistently for the past 30 years (gulp!).

PEEX promises to make live music more interactive and personalised. Although, actually being at a gig/concert is pretty interactive and personal.

However, PEEX offers a two-part way of achieving more interaction. First, PEEX LIVE enables music fans to create their own enhanced 5 channel mix of the live concert sound. They will remain truly immersed in the energy of the performance via wearable technology, the rX, and an easy-to-use app.

Additionally, PEEX RELIVE will provides a forum for the musicians to sell audio downloads of past and future live shows. This will, of course, be rendered in PEEX’s unique 5 channel interactive audio format.

This, at least on paper, seems a more friendly way than MQA Live, for instance, for the actual content creators to reach their audience.

PEEX new experiences

peex rxI have been told that PEEX offers new experiences, content and business opportunities for the whole of the music industry.

Global music ticketing revenues are predicted to hit $24.6bn (more if you include unscrupulous vendors engaging in ‘reselling’) by 20211. The new platform is poised to grow this number further, providing new commercial opportunities for artists, labels, and venues. Moreover, it will generate additional revenue from live shows that have previously gone uncaptured.

The tech bit

peexliveTo enable the PEEX LIVE experience, the PEEX team collaborates with artists to take an audio feed from their production. They then separate the multi-channel mix into five separate stems that are transmitted to the audience. The transmitted signal is in a proprietary and encrypted format.

A fan-owned wearable PEEX rX picks up that signal and synchronises with the PA system ensuring no perceptible delay in the two sound sources. The connected Bluetooth app then provides fans the ability to personalise the experience via a 5 channel mixer set up by the musicians and instruments.

peexliveThe 5 channel in-app mixer splits the sound into five adjustable channels, such as the piano, bass, vocals, etc. This enables fans to be able to control and set up their preferred multi-mix of the sound.

The rX blends the live sound with a personal digital mix. Thus creating the perfect concert experience for you anywhere in the venue.

Distracting?

peex rxAccording to the company, this tech has been carefully designed to ensure you’re not isolated from the concert experience.

The rX is provided with a set of earbuds that allows some ambient sound to still be heard. However, should you prefer to use your own headphones you can do via the standard 3.5mm jack.

Additionally, after the show, you can relive your favourite moments via PEEX RELIVE.

We are promised the same 5 channel mixable format and high fidelity via the same in-app interface. PEEX is currently partnering with selected artists in order to offer download sales of some of their iconic previous live show recordings, all in their proprietary 5 channel format.

Words

Graham Tull, Chief Technology Officer and co-founder of PEEX, comments:

We’re delighted to unveil PEEX. Through focussing on adding genuine value both to music fans and the music industry ecosystem, we’ve invented new music technology that we’re all very proud of and believe will revolutionise the live music experience. Artists, labels and venues will all benefit from a closer dialogue with their audience via the PEEX app. We’re looking forward to putting PEEX into action with our upcoming partnerships including A-list talent – it’s sure to be a game-changer for fans, artists, and the live music experience.”

Mike Dawson, CFO of Rocket Music Management, added

Over the last three years, Rocket has worked closely with the team at PEEX as they’ve developed their technology to improve the fan experience at live gigs, and we’re eager to see it go to market. In our partnership with PEEX, we see a disruptive technological breakthrough that has incredible potential to generate new income streams for musicians, artists, venues, and labels alike. All of us at Rocket love PEEX and we are genuinely excited about how it’s going to change the experience of live music for the fans.”

Price and availability

The free PEEX app, enabling PEEX RELIVE, will be available to download soon from Apple’s App Store (iOS) and the Google Play Store (Android).

xDSDiFi audio has announced the xDSD, an MQA-optimised DAC/Amplifier that works equally well as an ultra-portable or home-based device. It is packing aptX and AAC Bluetooth on board, whilst also delivering hi-res audio up to PCM768kHz and DSD512 to amplifiers, active speakers and headphones of all types.

Following the recent news that their latest firmware update, v5.30 ‘Cookies & Cream’, adds MQA playback to a range of current and discontinued iFi devices, they chose the hige AXPONA hi-fi show in Chicago to announce their xDSD DAC/amp this week.

iFi xDSD

xDSDThe xDSD is all about hi-res audio on-the-go. Furthermore, it hands you the options of going wireless or wired.

I am really loving the design of iFi’s latest. It certainly makes a bold statement of both luxury and style, especially in its dark chrome finish.

The lightweight undulating enclosure is constructed from 6063-T5 magnesium-aluminium alloy. The molded plastic end cap allows unrestricted Bluetooth transmission.

Ease of operation remains the focus of iFi and so all the switches and connections have been optimised to match the new chassis. The central analogue volume rotary dial is a prime example of this. Also, the middle of that also doubles up as the on/off and pairing button.

Connectivity

xDSDFor hooking up to your phone, tablet or laptop, then the unit’s aptX/AAC Bluetooth radio will prove handy. However, if you are not on the move or have pocket space for a stack, then the USB and S/PDIF ports are your friends. The unit also sports a USB A port that works with Android OTG as well as iOS when used with a Lightning connection camera kit. iFi have bundled a variety of adapters, as well as a USB 3.0 cable.

The xDSD supports high-resolution formats (MQA and DSD) and includes the iFi S-Balanced 3.5mm TRRS headphone circuit. This delivers 500mW of power per channel and should prove plenty to drive all but the most power-hungry headphones. The 3.5mm line out provides fixed 2v line output for connecting to hi-fi system or driving active speakers.

As it is portable it makes perfect sense for it to be battery powered. Charge comes from a 2200mAh Lithium-Polymer battery that should be good for six-to-eight hours of playing time. This will obviously depend on headphone sensitivity, output etc. The microUSB port is there for recharging duties.

Hi-res play

Under the hood much of the magic is due to the Burr-Brown multibit DSD1793 DAC Chipset. This is mated to the femto precision GMT Clock and intelligent memory buffer system derived from AMR Audio’s US$5,500 flagship DAC to eliminate jitter.

This all adds up to the xDSD being able to play nice with PCM up to 32/384 kHz and DSD up to 256 times the sample rate of a CD.

MQA is onboard as standard in the xDSD thanks to the new firmware as it does with the iDSD Black Label from now. However, should you prefer 22.57MHz DSD and 768kHz/32Bit PCM, then alternative firmware is available for the xDSD. Please note, using this will prevent being able to listen to MQA.

Price and availabilty

The xDSD will be £399 when it lands in the UK.

For more information and links to download the new firmware to your iDSD Black Label or any other compatible device via PC or Mac, visit ifi-audio.com/audio_blog/mqa-firmware

ifi nano idsd black label

ifi nano idsd BLA month ago I was at the launch of the iFi nano iDSD Black Label portable DAC/amp. Now, I think it’s time to share my thoughts about it.

There are many companies looking to improve your audio on the go. As with most Hi-Fi, there’s also quite a range of price points from the easily affordable to the “how much?!” levels.

The latest portable offering from iFi comes in the reasonably priced arena. It’s a neat looking device with plenty of features crammed in.

Let’s take a look at how it performs.

iFi nano iDSD BL design

iFi nano iDSD Black Label angleI do like the stealthy matte black angular design of the nano iDSD BL. The orange lettering and LED are the only visible hightlights. Even the iFi logo is black.

As you would expect from something called nano, this portable head amp and DAC easily fits in your pocket. Measuring just 96(l) x 64(w) x 25.5(h)mm and tipping the scales at a nicely weighted 139g, it feels sturdy.

It will take the knocks but, thanks to the bundled pouch with cable slot, it shouldn’t be any worse for wear being kept in a bag.

iFi nano iDSD Black Label angle rightUnder the nano iDSD BL’s hood is a Burr-Brown True Native DAC. This has the chops to deal with PCM files all the way up to 32bit/384kHz. Additionally audio skills include DXD and DSD256 formats. It also supports MQA, so physical MQA files and Tidal Masters are also accepted.

The amplifier is a Dual Mono 2 x 285mW Direct Drive, coupling capacitor free circuit for highest fidelity. iFi states that the iDSD packs “…maximum output power (32R) around 10 times that of iPhone 6 (285mW vs. 27mW)” and can drive most headphones on the market.

Alongside a ‘Direct’ 3.5mm headphone output, the ‘iEMatch’ output attempts to compensate for the extra sensitivity of in-ears.

Next to the heaphone ports is a chunky volume control dial that uses an analogue potentiometer for best sound quality.

iFi nano iDSD Black Label rearFlip it around and you get a 3.5mm line-level output for connecting to an amplifier or pair of active speakers.

Also around the rear is a USB type-A port. This makes it easy to connect to smartphones, laptops and tablets. This also doubles up as a charger when the 10-hour  Lithium Polymer battery life runs dry.

Between the line-out and USB port is a switch that offers a choice of two DAC filter options: ‘Listen’ (a minimum-phase Bezier filter that iFi suggests sounds better) and ‘Measure’ (a linear-phase Transient Aligned filter, said to perform better in measurement tests).

The iDSD nano Black Label is compact and feels like a quality device.

iFi nano iDSD BL performance

iFi nano iDSD Black Label frontUsing the nano iDSD BL with my Nvidia Shield tablet I was immediately taken by its smooth and neutral presentation.

The built-in IEMatch circuit ensures that even extremely sensitive headphones and IEMs are ‘hiss free’ throughout the volume range. The nano also includes the S-Balanced wiring system for the headphone outputs. This hands it the full benefit of balanced outputs when used with headphones and IEMs (fitted with balanced wiring) with low-noise and lower distortion. Even single-ended headphones benefit, as S-Balanced cuts crosstalk in half.

Having a rechargable battery also means 10 hours+ of audio enjoyment untethered by power lead.

Sound quality

Plugging it in to my phone for the commute with my Oppo PM-3 headphones the iDSD BL cleanly boosts the volume. Furthermore, there’s plenty of clarity and detail. However, this wasn’t the kind of clinical clarity that can easily wear you down though. There’s an ease and openness that leads to extended listening sessions.

ifi nano idsd black label headphone amp dacOrchestral tracks retain their weight as well as a lighter touch with string solos. Instumentation has plenty of room to breathe too.

Flicking between Tidal Masters (MQA), Spotify as well as 24bit Qobuz files you can hear the difference, especially between Spotify and the rest.

That transparancy continues through FLAC and DSD files. The one downside to this is poorly ripped MP3s are left practically unlistenable.

Openness

iFi nano iDSD Black Label nvidia shield oppo pm3My usual choice for portable DAC/Amp in this price range is still the Oppo HA-2.  It is still a remarkable device but the nano iDSD BL is more adept at unravelling more taxing tunes. Tracks such as ‘Slander’ by Trash Talk, ‘Run to Your Mama’ by Goat, or even The Distillers’ ‘City of Angels’ can get messy, yet the iFi unit still pushes the walls to give these bands some space.

However, dynamics and subtlty are sometimes exchanged for the nano’s clarity and space.

The high-hat crash that punctuates Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’ seems to be disconnected from the strum of the acoustic guitar.

As I was about to wrap up this review, ‘Love Like Blood’ by Killing Joke started up and stopped me in my tracks (literally). Raven’s bass has such weight, the drums are tight and clear. But, it’s when Jaz starts singing that I get tingles. The piano stabs are also well defined.

Well, played iFi, well played.

Quality shows

Playing my NAS-stored audio on random through my laptop it was fun to try and guess the format.

You can tell what you are playing thanks to the device’s front LED. If you’re playing DSD256, for instance, the light glows blue. Put some DSD 64/128 through it and it goes cyan. MQA files will give you a magenta light.

iFi nano iDSD BL review conclusion

There is plenty to like about the iFi nano iDSD Black Label. It’s on-board battery has decent stamina and it’s a nice looking device.

I may have been spoilt by the Chord Mojo (twice the cost of the nano) but I do feel that the nano could be more dynamic. However, that’s not to say that it isn’t enjoyable. I have used the nano with my tablet every lunchtime at the day job. In fact, that has now become my work system.

The nano iDSD Black Label certainly performs well and presents excellent value. If you’re looking for a versatile and talented portable head amp and DAC, you owe yourself to at least audition the nano.

ifi nano idsd black labeliFi Audio has introduced their new DAC/headphone amplifier. Dubbed the nano iDSD Black Label, I was there at the launch.

How time flies. This last week-or-so has been bonkers at the day-job as well as keeping GadgetyNews ticking over. However, the launch of the iFi iDSD Black Label is something I cannot just skip over.

I and other esteemed members of the press were gathered at Soho’s House of St. Barnabus for iFi’s launch of the nano iDSD Black Label portable headphone amp and DAC.

As well as showcasing the new device, there was a table loaded with iFi’s other goodies.

iFi nano iDSD Black Label

ifi nano idsd black label headphone amp dacThe new DAC supports PCM up to 32-bit/384-kHz and up to DSD 256, as well as MQA.

Additionally you get a pair of headphone outputs, one of which supports iFi’s iEMatch feature. If you’re unaware, this tech lets you choose how much power to apply to your specific headphones.

There is also a USB 2.0 input and a 3.5mm line output.

The nano iDSD Black Label is battery-powered, with a stated 10 hours of battery life.

Highlights

nano idsd BLThe nano iDSD Black Label is able to output 10 times more power than a laptop or phone alone. This means that this pocket-sized amp is can drive any set of headphones or in-ear monitors (IEMs).

The inclusion of MQA technology makes hi-res audio streaming a reality. Furthermore, it delivers studio master quality audio to your headphones.

ifi nano idsd BLFurthermore, it supports PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD up to 256 times the sample rate of a CD. It is also certified as ‘High-Res Audio’ by the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) and Japan Audio Society (JAS). This makes it one of the most high resolution DACs out there.

Adding to its cred, it’s the only portable DAC that lets you choose between the “Listen” (minimum phase Bezier Filter) and “Measure” (linear phase Transient Aligned Filter) options.

Black Label benefits

  • The integrated iPurifier adds noise isolation for USB Input.
  • The new OTG ‘A-Type’ USB input links seamlessly with iPhone/smartphones and tablets.
  • The analogue stage features dual-mono design and a dedicated fixed level line out.
  • S-Balanced wiring system for the headphone outputs. This gives the full benefit of balanced outputs when used with headphones/IEMs fitted with balanced wiring with low noise and distortion.
  • Even cuts crosstalk in half for unbalanced headphones

First impressions

I’ve been using it out and about and, after more than a week, it still impresses.

I will be carving out some time for a proper listening session. So, please stay tuned for a full review soon-ish.

Price and avilability

The retail price of the nano iDSD Black Label is €249 /£199 (incl. VAT)
