Warhammer Age of Sigmar Champions adds VR to tabletop gaming
Warhammer Age of Sigmar is one of Games Workshop’s biggest products and it has now been infused with Augmented Reality (AR).
The Nottingham-based gaming company has teamed up with a Cambridge technology firm to take it to a whole new audience.
Games Workshop and PlayFusion announced thier partership at the Game Developer Conference (GDC). This will bring the Warhammer universe to life through the magic of AR.
Warhammer Age of Sigmar Champions
At the moment players can experience the fantasy world of Lord Vandus and Khorgos Khul using traditional miniatures and tabletop battles.
But it will now be expanded into a trading card game. Furthermore, this will bring in augmented reality to bring the game even more to life.
PlayFusion, an entertainment company which produces trading card games such as Lightseekers, will release ‘Warhammer Age of Sigmar Champions’ in July this year.
In Warhammer Age of Sigmar Champions, players will be able to collect, play and experience the title with both physical trading cards as well as a digital trading card videogame. The latter being further accompanied by a completely immersive AR experience.
The physical trading card game will feature hundreds of collectible cards that players can use to build their own decks to fit their strategy and tactics. Moreover, the physical cards will also come to life when viewed through the Enhanced Reality Engine. This will allow fans to unlock various enhanced gameplay options.
Finally, Warhammer Age of Sigmar Champions will also feature physical-to-digital experiences. This additional aspect enables players to import their physical cards into the digital game – available for iOS, Android and PC – and play them online.
Partnership
Jon Gillard, head of licensing for Games Workshop, said:
Working with such a talented and accomplished group like PlayFusion is an absolute privilege. Their passion, technological expertise and just sheer ‘can do’ attitude has been seriously impressive.
Taking the richness of Warhammer Age of Sigmar and merging it with their innovative hybrid physical/digital trading card game makes for a winning combination anyway, but add in the cool AR functionality and this game is really something special.”
Mark Gerhard, CEO and Co-Founder of PlayFusion, said:
Partnering with Games Workshop fulfills a lifelong dream of contributing to the Warhammer universe.
The majority of our team and I grew up part of the Warhammer community, so it’s a huge honour for all of us to not only partner with such an iconic British company but also to contribute to one of the original and best fantasy IPs [intellectual properties] in the world.
We are really passionate about developing a rich and innovative new way for the community and beyond to experience the Age of Sigmar.”
