Sony PlayStation 4 could be less than £400
Sony could well be planning on launching the PS4 at a lower price than its predecessor, the PlayStation 3.
When Sony launched the PS3 in the UK it came with a wallet-pounding £425 price tag. With the current economic climate and Microsoft looking to be close to outing the Xbox 360’s replacement soon, it would be brave/silly to drop the PS4 at a larger asking price.
The balancing act that Sony has to manage is packing the next gen PlayStation with lovely tech but making it accessible for its market – as well as being affordable enough to be included on kids’ (big and small) Christmas lists.
Honestly, how low can we expect Sony to realistically price the PS4?
Sony Worldwide Studios VP Michael Denny told Edge “We listen and learn and take the judgement from every console launch we ever have and we have to be informed by what the strengths of our PlayStation 3 system have been, but also the challenges of that,” .
He goes on to state “We want a system that can reach as broad a gaming audience as possible but whilst being a system that’s deep, connected, rich and immersive and is going to give a very focused and differentiated experience than anything else that’s out there.
“We’ve got lots of information yet to give out on PlayStation 4. The initial announcement phase that we’re in now is just to explain the vision to everybody. Part of that vision is we have created a console absolutely focused on gamers – and we want that to be gamers in the broadest sense as well. I think to some extent I can ask you to draw your own conclusions.”
Granted, Nintendo’s Wii U Premium launched at a very reasonable £299 but seems to have failed to make as big a dent as Ninte must’ve hoped. True, this is a very different demographic to the one the PS4 and Xbox 720/Durango have their sights on, but it’s worth keeping in mind all the same.
Perhaps one way that Sony could attack a deeper pool of gamers would be to release two versions – an entry-level machine and one with all the bells and whistles.
How much are you willing to pay for the PS4 when it arrives? Have you put down your deposit at Asda, Game or Amazon?
