Huawei Mate 9 dual Leica cameras, options
The Huawei Mate 9 looks to be getting dual cameras, albeit in a different configuration to the Huawei P9. These also look to be Leica lenses.
The lead up to this interesting news started with a peek at a two-lens set-up, but then sensor size came in. Will the Mate 9 be loaded with a 12-megapixel or 20-megapixel camera?
Thankfully, the latest leak shows the Mate 9 will in fact have Leica branding – unlike the Honor 8.
Leica logo and details
The new renders show Lecia’s logo clearer between the two lenses. Word is that these have an aperture of f/2.0, which improves upon the P9’s f/2.2.
I guess it should not be a surprise to see Leica appearing on a second Huawei phone. After all, the two companies have agreed a partnership and have opened a jointly operated research and development centre at Leica’s headquarters in Wetzlar, Germany.
The collaboration has been formed to produce a “wide range of photographic and mobile device applications”. The roadmap also includes “computational imaging, augmented reality and virtual reality solutions”, so there’s definitely more to come.
Choice of Mate
The leaked slides gives away three tiers of the phone. These offer a choice of storage and memory, with different colours reserved for each tier.
The entry level model will have 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage and will be available in graphite, silver and gold. The next phone will have 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage and will be available in graphite, white, gold, rose gold. The top level model will have 6GB RAM, 256GB storage and have six colour options: graphite, white, gold, black, rose gold and brown.
Mate 9 release date
The Huawei Mate 9 was initially expected to be released in December but that’s now been brought forward to November.
Either way, it’ll land before Christmas that’s for sure.
