Download Physical Objects from The Pirate Bay for your Replicator

The Pirate Bay sees a Star Trek replicator in every homeThere are those amongst us that have used Pirate Bay – whether it was to digitally replace that now out of print album that your ex kept or just to watch a dodgy copy of the latest Hollywood blockbuster. Soon though, you could be downloading real, physical objects!

The Pirate Bay is moving to pirate solid objects? How on earth are you going to download some 80s Addidas trainers?

Well, the renowned file sharing site is introducing a new category called “Physibles” in anticipation of the day where “you will print the spare parts for your vehicles.”

Physibles are “data objects that are able (and feasible) to become physical,” the site says in its announcement blog post.

Basically, it will become a download source for files to be used with 3D printers. Obviously, in time every home will have one.

“You will download your sneakers within 20 years,” the blog post goes on to say.

Right now Physibles category contained just three files available for download. Included were apparent data files for a whistle, a model robot and a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle muscle car.

I have to agree with TPB that when 3D printing and file-sharing becomes widespread it will be beneficial to society. Just imagine the day when every home has a replicator. You could print yourself a new car Whenever you wanted one.

“No more shipping huge amount of products around the world,” says the blog post. “No more shipping broken products back. No more child labor. We’ll be able to print food for hungry people. We’ll be able to share not only a recipe, but the full meal.”

Of course this won’t please the big companies as The Pirate Bay has already become Public Enemy #1 thanks to connecting its users with collections of music and movie files, with no regard for copyright. If it’s able to do the same with 3D files, the site could become a way to grab those limited edition Nike Air Mag hi-tops.

Granted, this is all based on the assumption that everyone will have the hardware to print out their new cars and sneakers.

I, for one, hope this becomes science fact but has The Pirate Bay been watching too many of the films listed as science fiction on their own servers?
