ride-1

ride bannerRIDE, the brand new motorcycle racing experience from Milestone, offers you a chance to delve deep and submerge yourself into the world of motorbike racing. A departure from the usual Milestone formula, RIDE takes a big step in the right direction.

RIDE eases you in slowly; clear, precise menus and a rider profile are waiting to set you up for the road ahead. If you’re not familiar with motorcycle racing, there is a tutorial explaining racing lines, shifting weight, front and back braking and tucking into corners – it’s all there.

For a newcomer, RIDE really does explain itself well. Your customised rider comes complete with a squeaky clean set of leathers, stylish urban clothing and even an array of funky his and hers hairstyles.

ride-1At first glance RIDE is exciting, slick and fresh. With a game-title shouted in capitals RIDE needs to impress, and with the amount of motorcycles and manufacturers on offer it certainly does. There are over a hundred motorbikes to collect from Ducati, Kawasaki, Triumph, Suzuki and Yamaha to name but a few. Each one is highly detailed, and when entering the in-game photo mode these machines look pretty incredible – not hitting the DRIVECLUB level of detail but still beautiful all the same. There’s not a huge difference in handling between bikes, but belting down a straight and releasing the throttle as you tuck into a sharp hairpin bend certainly feels that bit riskier the more powerful the machine you’re mounted on.

As with car simulators the only real way to taste the true sense of speed is opting for the different helmet cams. Tossing from corner to tight corner leaning in feels so smooth, you can really enjoy the physics of these brutal machines. Racing in RIDE feels spot on and can’t be faulted. Don’t think you’re going to be thrown off these powerful machines with ease. RIDE wants you to enjoy their races and tries to keep you seated as much as possible. Because of this we have a bike simulator/racer that can be enjoyed by anyone.

ride-2RIDE brings in different locations by the atlas-full. Descending countryside lanes, Speedway circuits and full on racing circuits, it’s a mammoth and varied journey ahead that makes each ride an interesting one. Visually the track and locations unfortunately don’t have the same detail and excitement that the bikes display. Stadiums and venues do look rather static and lack excitement. If you want epic looking lush forest locations wait for Uncharted.

Where RIDE departs from other Milestone releases is the different types of races you need to take part in. World Tour is the game’s single player mode. Events consists of head-to-head races, drag races which require perfect gear changes, timed races and even overtaking events which really make RIDE an interesting and varied game. There are also Championship rounds, and new racer name titles to unlock. There are subcategories of each of the eight modes, and a further elite set of races to complete. In single player mode, placing first, second and third gains you credit and reputation points, and credits can be spent on upgrades and buying new bikes.

Each new upgrade displays the new super powers whether it be Engine, Transmission, Brakes or Wheels.

The more races you win the more credits you earn and the quicker you can get your machine to scream like a banshee. Each event can be entered by simply purchasing the appropriate motorcycle. Reputation points see you climb the in-game leader boards. Trophies are awarded for climbing this golden ladder, and talking of trophies Milestone have given you a very easy platinum trophy to race for.

ride-3Unfortunately slowing the action down to a halt are the intrusive loading times. We get rather spoiled wanting games to load quicker than a Kawasaki H2R. Loading screens displaying in-depth overviews and manufacturer history can take the sting out of the wait. Also the menu soundtrack helps, this music a better choice than some of the guitar-shredding anthems heard in-game.

Once you’re dipped into the single player mode RIDE also has another avenue to head down and that’s online. Here you can impress and leave your online opposition for dust or slam into a tree. With so many options to mess with each race can be as hard or easy as you want.

ride-4Conclusion

Milestone have delivered a huge new biking experience crammed with content, motorcycles and a fresh new racing path to race down. Only niggling slow load times and some lifeless stadiums spoil the fun. RIDE is deep enough for your motorbike racing fanatic yet accessible for the less educated rider. Part sim, all fun, get on your bike.

thumb treadz reviewYou may remember we tested out Trigger Treadz last year on the P&L website and we really loved them. Well now the guys over at iMP gaming are proud to announce Thumb Treadz.

Thumb Treadz attach to the analogue sticks on the original PlayStation 4 controller and come in two styles: a harder TPU Dimple compound and a softer Silicone Ridge one. Unlike Trigger Treadz, these beauties don’t need glue and it’s a simple case of fitting them onto each stick.

thumb treadz ps4I’ve been playing with these for a while now and honestly, I love them. They feel great and really give improved grip and extra comfort. You’ll not be prizing these off my white DS4 for a long while.

If you’re a sucker for gaming accessories then these are for you – plus they save wear and tear on your controller.

thumb treadz packAvailable from Trigger Treadz at the price of £2.99/€3.99/$4.99 for 4 Thumb Treadz.

Rebel galaxy ps4 head

Rebel galaxy ps4 headRebel Galaxy is an epic game of space combat, adventure and exploration. Double Damage Games was founded in 2014 by Travis Baldree and Erich Schaefer. Both have a very impressive history and previously co-founded Runic Games, where they made Torchlight and Torchlight 2. Erich was co-creator and lead designer of Diablo and Diablo II and also went on to create the dark fantasy RPG Hellgate: London.

October saw the announcement that Rebel Galaxy is coming to PS4, and with such epic craft and awesome visuals we needed to know more. We had the pleasure of hooking up with Travis Baldree and Erich Schaefer from Double Damage Games.

rebelgalaxylogoFor folks that don’t know about Rebel Galaxy, can you tell us more about what they can expect?

Rebel Galaxy is a space scoundrel simulator! If you were to take the naval combat from Assassin’s Creed:Black Flag, and transfer it to space, with all of the cool trappings you get in sci-fi, then mix it with some Star Control 2, and conversations with alien races, and some Wing Commander:Privateer for that edge-of-the-universe trading feel, you’d be getting close.

The ships look huge and grand; how does handling and fire power of such craft feel?

Each ship is different – some are smaller, corvette-class ships which are pretty nimble. A dreadnaught is slow and lumbering but covered in weaponry. Most of the ships are maneuverable and swift enough that you can actively dodge incoming weaponry, and weave in and out between objects. While the combat is ‘naval-style’ in a lot of ways, it is significantly faster than ocean faring vessels.

Rebel galaxy ps4 1How much of the RPG experience is there to Rebel Galaxy?

It’s significantly more than any other game we’ve done. I think the very first mission has at least five ways it can be completed, several involving no combat, some involving only conversation – or you could go in guns blazing. Our conversation and interaction system is tied into a faction system, so you can befriend groups, make enemies of others, and make real decisions about what sort of character you actually are. There are no rpg player stats – in a lot of ways your ship IS your ‘character’, given that you’ll be upgrading it over the course of the game. Our RPG elements are more bound ton conversations and how you play, and how other characters react to you.

What would you say are the wow factors in Rebel Galaxy?

I love zooming out to the solar system level, and then zipping into see what’s going on in various sections of the system. And I think we get some great cinematic moments with ships flying everywhere, zipping in and out between asteroids while they detonate around you. I think our best real feature is the combination of the various elements – combat, exploration, conversation, trading.

Did making Rebel Galaxy push you into a different area of gaming and is this something you would continue to explore?

It’s been a great change of pace from building the Action-RPGs we’re known for. There are more role-playing elements in this game, oddly, and it’s very enjoyable to work on new game systems that aren’t directly derived from a previous game. Developing for PS4 from the get-go has also been a lot of fun.

Rebel galaxy ps4 2How many hours are needed to complete Rebel Galaxy and does the game have a platinum trophy?

We don’t have a final hour count yet – we’ll have to get back to you on that one!

If you had an endless budget what would be the game you would create?

I’m not sure I’d ever want an endless budget. Limitations breed creativity 🙂

How impressed have you been with the PS4 line-up so far and what are your thoughts on the amount of indie games on offer?

I love my PS4, and I love the variety of content that’s coming to it. The barrier to entry for consoles has been so significantly lowered that I think we’ll continue to see more interesting and different games as the platform matures.

Has producing a game for PlayStation 4 been an easy ride and would you consider bringing this to PS Vita?

Blitworks did the initial port work for us and then we took over. They were excellent to work with, and I’ve been delighted at how easy it is to dev for. The tools and devkits are great, and extremely easy to get up and running with. It’s a far cry from the old days of console development!

We don’t have any current plans for the Vita – our resource limitations mean we have to be very careful about how many ports we try to take on 🙂

Rebel galaxy ps4 3We would like to say a huge thank you to Travis Baldree and Erich Schaefer for their time.

futuridium

futuridiumLittle known indie development team MixedBag are a modest bunch of guys. Tucked away in the far corners of Turin in Northern Italy, they have been busy – super busy in fact. The result is their now prized possession – psychedelic, kaleidoscopic shooter Futuridium EP Deluxe. Get set for one hell of a roasting.

Futuridium launches you into full-on gameplay just like your favourite arcade games did back in the day. This game is about speed and skill, but it’s also about immersing yourself into a different kind of shoot ‘em up. The developers have thrown out the endless, typical upgrades and ever prevalent levelling up features.

This shooter has its own game plan, and a mightily clever one it is too. The upshot is a blurry supernova of colour combined with incredibly addictive gameplay. What you are left with is a game that blows all the other competition sideways. A huge part of why it blows some of your other shooters into the abyss is because your ship can boost, shoot and perform eye-watering 180 degree turns in an instant.

futuridium-1The premise is simple; destroy all the cubes before your energy runs dry. The cubes in question are placed on brightly coloured alien spacecrafts and platforms which lurk in the darkest corners of space. Seek and destroy.

Some platforms are intricate in design, hiding cubes both inside, on top and underneath their surfaces. Other cubes are littered between structures, tucked away and buried. It’s here where you need to preform death-defying lunges inside tight claustrophobic tunnels to pick off each cube.

A quick tap on the button pulls a 180 turn and lets you return for multiple sweeps through missed areas to disintegrate those last remaining cubes. This is what Futuridium EP Deluxe is about; it’s a ferocious and exciting shooter with a pumping Wipeout-esque soundtrack to boot. If you really want to induce travel sickness then selecting cockpit view will suffice. I think you get the picture here.

futuridium-2There are 5 levels with 10 stages to each. Trust me, MixedBag want you to play and enjoy Futuridium as much as possible. As you venture further into space, certain sections become harder than 6 feet of hardcore. However, they still want you to progress. To do this they have put in place a constant extra credit/continue that is awarded to you, so the more cubes you destroy, the more chances you have at success and unlocking future levels. Each of the ten sections needs to be completed within the set amount of credits given to you or it’s game over. Destroying cubes also unlocks different skins.

There are 10 in total and with names like Bubble Gum Pink and so on, you know what to expect here. Other extra features include a Classic mode and a super hard bonus game called Flappyridium. Not forgetting of course the Leaderboards. They also play a big part in Futuridium.

futuridium-3From Zaxxon and Defender, to TxK and Velocity 2X and all that has come in-between, it’s the simple yet sophisticated mechanics that make a game stand the test of time, and Mauro Fanelli, MixedBag’s main man, knows this. From my early days of standing on milk crates playing old school arcade cabinets to the modern day Resogun, here we have another classic to add to the ever growing list.

futuridium-4CONCLUSION

MixedBag have stripped away the unnecessary and gone back to basics to produce something extraordinarily special. Highly polished gameplay and amazing mechanics deliver to PS4 and PS Vita a massive heart pumping release. Late night gaming just got a whole lot later.

final horizon topYesterday, Eiconic Games give our very own Blondlizard an update on intergalactic tower defence game, Final Horizon. I’ll now hand you over to your favourite reptilian gamer for the latest lowdown.  Jay

Simon Credland shows the ‘colour script’ from screenshots taken from Final Horizon and explains how the story flows from one planet to another colour via the storyboard.

Final Horizon is a cinematic experience right from the beginning as the sun breaks over the Horizon of Vega Delta. Your journey will take you to 15 planets across the three solar systems with the 3D level select menus. With more planets than Destiny, you will face the insect-like Swarm from the deserts of Nhandu, on the sub-zero Ushtuk to the alien worlds of Kondoi.

final horizon screenshotEach planet has it’s own personality that affects the gameplay. The ice planets are so cold the mechanical Chaingun won’t function so you’ll need to bring the heat with the ‘Afterburner’ flamethrower. There are five different Killstreaks across the planets and the Swarm will attack in ever more ingenious and deadly waves.

final horizon screenshot 2Final Horizon is a fast paced tower defence game with 53 intense levels. The game has a platinum trophy and comes to PS Vita and PlayStation 4 soon.

final horizon screenshot 1 Punk and Lizard have followed Final Horizon from its very early stages and it’s certainly looking to be something special.

Simon from Eiconic Games will be showing off the game on the Sony PS4 stand at Eurogamer/Egx. Be sure to check this one out!

pure chess review

pure chess reviewWhen Punk began to recite the rules of Draughts to me upon hearing we were to review Pure Chess, I took it upon myself to handle the oldest board game in history. Having previously been released on PSN in 2012, VooFoo Studios now unleash their Next Gen version of Pure Chess onto Playstation 4 and Holy Moly are the first words that come to mind.

Why? Because Pure Chess looks knockout stunning and dare I say a masterpiece. Each perfectly formed chess piece glistens in their different environments, showing off layers and textures with the finest of detail. Stone, marble, crystal, wood and metal statues all shimmer on a handcrafted walnut and maple board kept in mint condition. It even comes complete with a Pledge finish. With no lost pieces in this set, let’s hope VooFoo and Ripstone have given chess players and newcomers alike the definitive chess package.

pure chess 1Luckily for me I learnt to play this ultimate mind game years ago, but if you have never played Chess before don’t be hesitant to learn as the game is relatively easy to pick up and very rewarding to play. Winning however may be a different story. Pure Chess caters to the complete novice but also to the seasoned chess grand master with ten different settings. Chess is all about strategy and is similar to Snooker in the way that player’s must always be planning many moves ahead. If like me you have not played for a good few years then the aptly named ‘Monkey’ level is your starting block. When progressing to Apprentice, Thinker and Challenger levels things do get harder and the immortal words ‘Check Mate’ appear often, ending your defensive stance all too quickly.

pure chess 2The tutorials in Pure Chess are explained thoroughly and thankfully don’t throw a wall of text at you. Each type of piece moves in a distinct way and has its own value but don’t worry – every move and rule is explained in a manner you can take on board. After these short texts you’ll then perform the required move. The game allows for a good amount of customisation also – choosing whether to undo moves, playing to a timer or even highlighting legal moves can all be chosen at the start of each game.

pure chess 3There’s not just computer AI to challenge, you can invite friends to play against online, and mini games are also included making this a full package. The ‘Win in one Move’ mini game is a great way to see if you really have been listening to the tutorials and understanding each piece’s movements. Having the oppunitity to save games (six in total) comes in handy too as the better you get the longer each game can be.

Using the anolog sticks enables you to move the camera around the table and analyse play from different viewpoints. This preferred view can then be locked or you can simply revert back to the default view. Museum, Penthouse and Library are your different playing areas and all give off a luxurious back drop. These are also coupled with an easy listening soundtrack that peters away unobtrusively in the background.

pure chess 4

Conclusion

VooFoo tell us they locked their artist away in a darkened room with only PS4 developer kits and Pot Noodles to achieve this high degree of graphical beauty. Other developers best start looking for that kettle. If there is one time in your life you wanted to learn the game of Chess, then VooFoo Studios and Ripstone have given you all you need. Pure Chess is pure brilliance wrapped up in a class bundle of immense gleaming beauty. It’s finally time to act your age for once. Pure Chess, Check Mate.

king oddball

king oddballKing OddBall is not particularly odd. We’ve all been gaming many years now to realise that it is very hard to come across something that is truly odd. Saying that, King OddBall wants to wreak havoc on the world using his only weapon of choice, his tongue.

It’s a tongue that Gene Simmons from Kiss would be jealous of. Maybe if he also had the lips of legendary Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, we would have something truly odd on our hands. Nevertheless, 10tons first PlayStation 4 release comes rolling down the physics puzzle path of destruction with aplomb and lands firmly on PlayStation 4 soil.

king oddball screenshotForget ordering your people into battle for you or forced national service. This is King Oddball you’re dealing with, and he does things slightly different. Gaining momentum with his tongue, he has the power to lick up rocks and release them causing mass destruction upon the world. King Oddball stares down from the skies centre stage with tanks, solders and exploding crates lining the terrain.

king oddball spectacularOddball’s tongue swings back and forth and with rock in tongue, he can rid the screen of enemies with a well timed blow. It’s a concept you’re familiar with, but somehow this little game has an air of freshness to it which is part of its appeal. Maybe it’s the school jotter book drawings. You know the ones, the kid at school that was rather handy with a pencil would do them. Or maybe it’s the fact that there are 120 levels to plough through, all throwing up slightly different level designs and cleverly positioned troops to smash.

king oddball screenshot1King Oddball only has 3 rocks to complete each level. These must be used to clear the screen of whatever lays below. At times, King Oddball can display clever skills. Having the ability to bounce rocks off tanks, bouncing balls and then being able to catch the rock is a rather neat skill and one trick which you’ll need to perform. On your war path you open up different sections of your battle map and here there are hidden levels, that aren’t really hidden – you’ll just need to complete a lot of levels to gain access to them.

Here lie different challenges; one being the One Rock Challenge, where instead of starting with your usual 3 rocks, only a single rock is handed to you. Your catching skills are required in abundance here. These ‘one rock’ levels can only be completed by either catching your throw rock or by destroying three enemies with a single rock. If you achieve this, King Oddball is rewarded with one more go. These little added levels certainly break up the game and definitely offer a different thought process.

king oddball screenshot2

Conclusion

A pretty fine puzzler and one of PlayStation 4?s cheapest games on the PSN. Whether it’s an Angry Bird or an Odd King, at this price I know which I would head for.

EGXRezzedLogoEGX Rezzed hit Birmingham’s NEC this weekend showcasing not only the latest Playstation 4 blockbusters, but also the onslaught of imminent PS Vita releases heading our way. EGX Rezzed was the place to be.

An incredible wave of UK talent was in abundance this year as FuturLab, Curve Studios, Team17, Eiconic Games and Roll7 all showcased their soon to be released games. We also discovered a gem of an indie developer called Mixed Bag Games, but more on those guys later. We were there to get all the news and latest footage, some of which can be see here for the first time…

First off we hooked up with Eiconic Games, who were showcasing their forthcoming RTS game Final Horizon, which is coming to both PS Vita and PS4. David Pollard (CEO from Eiconic) ran through the finer details with us while Si (Creative Art Director) also talked us through the PS Vita version. Check out the video below to see what we have to look forward to in the coming months:

Roll7’s critically acclaimed PS Vita release OlliOlli belted out grinds and tricks at an alarming rate but this time – it’s on the PS4. With the DS4 in hand OlliOlli looked big, bright and bold on the big screen. Tom, Director of Roll7 explains more about OlliOlli on the PS4 and what to expect:

Curve Digital have treated PS Vita players with an array of totally different experiences on the handheld and this weekend was no different. Rob Clarke, PR manager and guru is a seasoned pro. If you’ve ever had the privilege of attending one of Curve’s release launch dates or met the main man in person, then you’ll understand the level of passion and knowledge he has. Titan Attacks is part of Curve’s latest upcoming PS Vita and PS4 release, which is a nod to old school Space Invaders, Moon Cresta and Galaga. Rob demonstrates the game below and gets our intergalactical juices flowing. Titan Attacks (part of the Titan Invasion package) will conquer I’m sure.

Curve also have MouseCraft coming out in May on PS Vita. The game looks gorgeous and features over 50 levels across five different locations. Here, Rob runs through a few levels and brings on the cheese…

Curve also showcased the incredibly epic looking The Swapper which was first released on PC last year. This was definitely one of the best looking games on show at the expo. A hub up of activity around the Curve stand proves these guys deliver unique PlayStation gaming that excite everybody. We’ll be bringing more on The Swapper over the next few weeks.

FuturLab gave us all a treat with Velocity 2X, while we wait for the finished product it’s showing here just reiterated that it is all set to be an adrenaline fuelled visual masterpiece.

Dennaton and Devolver Digital proudly showcased Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, another huge release coming soon. From what we played so far the game is very much more of the same, which is perfect because we absolutely loved the original. Get ready for some more neon brutality!

Not many games have survived as long as Worms and now Worms Battlegrounds comes to Playstation 4. We hooked up with Bethany from Team 17 who showed us what to expect and how the DS4 controller performs.

Murdered: Soul Suspect had everyone talking. A supernatural detective thriller that got everyone’s head turning. The light, shadows and shading were impressive, and Square Enix’s visual feast can’t come soon enough. Alien: Isolation was epic, a thrilling survival horror from Creative Assembly. This game took centre stage and was one of the day’s must see games. If you want cold sweats and racing hearts, then this is for you. Alien: Isolation hits PlayStation 4 October 7th!

Tucked away in the Leftfield Collection we found an absolute gem of a game – well two to be precise. Here we had the fortunate experience of meeting Mauro Fanelli, co founder of Mixed Bag Games, a small indie developer from Turin, Italy. Here we were treated to two beautiful games; forma.8 and Futuridium EP Deluxe.

Both completely different games and both totally captivating. If you liked TxKon the PS Vita, then Futuridium will simply blow you away. A fast paced, clever and extremely sharp looking retro shooter that I know is going to excite PS Vita and PS4 gamers worldwide.

In Futuridium EP Deluxe you need to destroy cubes that are scattered throughout different worlds. The game reminded me of when I first discovered Wipeout, Futuridium is one game I could have easily put in my pocket and left a happy man. Mauro told us Futuridium EP Deluxe hits PS Vita in the next few months.

Their next game, forma8, instantly creates its own emotion. You play as a tiny exploration probe stranded on the surface of an alien planet. A game to totally emurse yourself into with an expansive world to explore. You start the game with no power, no weapons and no hint of what to do – it’s up to you to explore the planet and discover the story. Epic! forma8 hits Playstation later in the year Mauro told us, so we’ll just have to hold tight on that one. In the meantime, check out Mauro from Mixed Bag demonstrating both games for us:

Two other releases we are excited about are Wolfenstein: The New Order, a game widely recognized for pioneering the first-person shooter genre and futuristic biker Trials Fusion. Both coming to PlayStation real soon. See you at Eurogamer 2014! (and of course we always leave the building Punk and Lizard style)…
