KIOXIA The New Name for Toshiba Memory

KIOXIA – that’s the new name for Toshiba Memory and the new fleet of storage certainly looks impressive with cards hitting 1024GB.

KIOXIA has announced its EXCERIA microSD and SD cards will soon be available and packing up to 512GB on microSD and 1024GB of memory on SD cards. They promise to expand the potential of any device, from a smart phone up to a professional photographer’s camera, by using BiCS FLASH 3D memory.

In comparison with conventional Floating Gate NAND technology, BiCS FLASH 3D memory offers increased storage capacity with lower power consumption, increased power efficiency and reduced per gigabyte storage costs. For example, the 256GB EXCERIA HIGH ENDURANCE microSD card stores about 24 hours of Full HD video footage. Synology has launched their new DiskStation DS119j. This is a compact, energy-efficient 1-bay NAS. This could make an ideal first NAS for your home or office. Furthmore, as it only measures 166 mm x 71 mm x 224 mm , it won’t need much space to work.

NAS, or Network Attached Storage, is an excellent way of not only storing your digital files but enabling access to those files from anywhere in the world.

Synology DiskStation DS119j

Synology DiskStation DS119j

Synology is a renowned brand that produces high-quality NAS drive enclosures. Their latest offering is a single bay drive, meaning that it takes a single 3.5-inch hard drive. It can also fit a 2.5-inch drive with an optional adapter.

The new DiskStation is powered by a 64-bit Marvell Armada 3700 88F3720 dual-core 800MHz processor. This is mated with 256 MB DDR3L system memory.

Additionally, the DiskStation DS119j will accept a single volume up to 108TB.

Synology DiskStation DS119j

Michael Wang, product manager at Synology Inc, told us:

There are many users who are not familiar with a NAS yet, nor aware of the benefits of having one at home,” .”DS119j is aimed to be an ideal choice for first-time NAS users with versatile software features, an intuitive user interface, and an affordable price point.”

Tailor-made for the home environment, DS119j only consumes 5.01 watts in hard drive hibernation mode, and 10.04 watts under full operation. By comparison, a laptop can consume upwards of 45 watts. Furthermore, its noise dampening design makes it whisper-quiet compared to some PC counterparts.

DS119j also serves as a home multimedia server. You can easily share photos with friends, or stream music and video files to mobile devices or multimedia players.

DS119j runs on DiskStation Manager, the intuitive operating system for Synology NAS devices. This software offers various applications to enhance work productivity.

GadgetyNews - Low Jargon: High Tech

Solo AltitudeNew York brand, Solo, got in touch about their laptop bags recently. So, I have been living with one of their Altitude rucksacks from the Black Ops range for the past couple of months.

Having a few jobs means that I have to be mobile. In London, mobility means public transport or walking, for the most part. This all adds up to me and my kit having to get around easily. Sometimes I just need a notebook and a laptop. Other times, I also need camera kit including tripods, and the like.

I am reliant on a good bag. I have tried messenger bags but, over a certain weight, putting all that on one side soon irks my old back. It is generally rucksacks, or backpacks, that offer the most comfort and space.

The Black Ops Altitude backpack certainly looked to tick all the boxes.

Solo Altitude design

solo altitude frontAccording to Solo, the Altitude backpack is designed for “every adventure” and its construction seems to verify this.

What you get is a bag made from parachute nylon, so it is lightweight and durable. Additionally, the rucksack features some rather unique, and cool-looking, hardware that is “inspired by aviators”. I am assuming that this refers to chunky zippers and metal clasps as well as the military-grade Velcro. The latter enables you to affix the included ‘New York’ patch, for a start.

On the front is a rather natty metal Solo logo. The webbing that runs along the front could be used for hanging items from. There are also compression straps to alter the depth of the bag.

solo altitude laptop sectionThe rear, padded laptop compartment can accommodate a laptop up to 17.3-inches. Here there is also a separate section for tablets and a mesh pocket facing them for odds and ends. Between those is quite a large area that will happily swallow A4 notebooks.

solo altitude front mainThe front zippered section boasts two smaller organiser pockets as well as a large storage section. Additionally, this part has a handy key clasp.

solo altitude front pocketsFinally, rounding off the main sections, there are two further zipped pockets on the very front. The top one is ideal for business card holder, door pass cards, keys, etc. The lower one is larger than the one above and, again, contains organiser pockets, the larger of which holds a glasses case perfectly.

Even more pockets

That’s the main event covered but that still leaves the sides.

solo altitide rightOn one side you will find four levels of small pockets. The lower two are sectioned off. I find the third level the right depth for pens. Here you will also see one of the discrete Solo logos as well as one of the compression straps.

solo altitude leftThe other side has an extendable pouch which is perfect for bottles, flasks or umbrellas. Again, there is another compression strap.

Comfort

solo altitude backThe back of the pack is well padded.

Furthermore, the padded section is secured at the edges which enables the bag to slip over rolling luggage handles.

solo altitude luggageThe straps are also well padded and feature d-rings for attaching things via carabiners. Lastly, there is a waist strap that fastens across your body to aid comfort and security. Great for cyclists as well as walkers.

The bag measures 18.50 x 12.6 x 4.92 inches, which is well under the requirements for airline carry-on luggage.

Although constructed from lightweight nylon, it still manages to tip the scales at 2.2 pounds when empty. This will be mostly due to the quality heavy-duty fasteners and padding.

Solo Altitude performance

solo altitude reviewI have had this bag packed full. The main compartment’s laptop area cossets your computer with 1/4-inch thick padding. This has looked after my Lenovo Yoga II Pro as well as a HP Envy X2 without issue. The tablet section has been home to my Nvidia Shield; again with plenty of room to spare.

The main section between the device pockets and mesh pocket gobbles up 12-inch records still in their card mailers easily. As I get most of my LPs delivered to my office address, this is more handy than you’d think. For those of you that do not have a vinyl addiction, this section has also proved handy for product catalogues and full-sized notebooks.

solo altitude packI have actually used the front section to pack my DSLR in its case. That’s as well as cabling and my headphones.

The Solo Altitude has proven itself good as a weekend bag too. The large main areas easily accommodating clothes and a change of footwear.

Let’s not forget how it looks. This really won me over. I love the discrete branding as well as the metal details and stealthy look. The top carrying handle is a must as I refuse to wear a pack on my pack on the train – nobody needs to wear their pack on a train! – so being able to easily hold my bag in those situations is a good thing.

Solo Altitude backpack review conclusion

There isn’t an area that disappoints with the Solo Altitude. It has done well in all weathers and my belongs have remained dry in deluges.

I actually like the yellow lining and the whole thing is well put together. The last two months have seen it in constant use and there are no visible signs of wear.

Furthermore, it stores everything that I have tried it with: laptops, show catalogues, notebooks, tablets, cameras, tripods, food containers, clothes, and LPs. It is surprising just how much this can carry – the only limit will be your back.

Capacious, comfortable, cool – I can thoroughly recommend the Solo Altitude backpack.

You can buy the Solo Altitude backpack right now from Amazon for £48.93.

GadgetyNews - Low Jargon: High Tech

wd my home cloud 8tb angle rightHaving your own personal cloud storage is an attractive notion. However, a lot of people are put off by the technical knowledge needed for some networked storage solutions. Western Digital (WD) may have what you are looking for.

These days everyone has stacks of digital files that they want to keep safe. These could be photos, videos, or even PDFs of important documents. You could squirrel these away on thumb drives or just on your computer hard-drives, but these aren’t fail safe. Plenty of you will back things up to some sort of cloud storage, I do too. But, wouldn’t it be great to have your own personal cloud?

The WD My Cloud Home is exactly that: a personal cloud you can keep at home, use as a multimedia NAS (network attached storage) box and synchronise with cloud-stored data.

WD My Cloud Home design

wd my home cloud 8tb angleThe My Cloud Home is dressed to match its My Passport siblings. It sports a two-tone white and silver outfit with the latter section carved out with a geometric pattern.

Between those two sections runs a white status light.

wd my home cloud 8tb topThe top is vented to allow air flow, but there is no filter to prevent dust or pet hairs from getting inside.

Peering down the vented lid you will see a single 8TB drive. Sensibly, WD has utilised one of its own lovely Red editions for this. Unfortunately, unlike the My Cloud Home Duo version, there is no access to the drive.

wd my home cloud 8tb rearAround the rear you will find a USB 3.0 port, as well as Ethernet and power ports.

It is a smart-looking device, which is not something you can say for most NAS boxes. WD definitely wants to attract the more casual, less tech-y user with this.

WD My Cloud performance

As this has been designed to be used by everyone, the drive can be accessed either by an app or via web browser. You can also open the drive up just as you would any drive on your PC.

My Cloud app

My Cloud AppThe My Cloud Home app is really straightforward to use. The main panel, ignoring the invitations to backup your cloud content, etc, shows the most recent activity on the drive. This is pretty handy if you have given all family members access, or you are collaborating with someone using the drive.

My Cloud AppAlong the bottom of the app are tabs for Activity (where you are now), Files, Photos and a Settings concertina menu.

The Settings menu gives you options to Invite Others to the drive, Manage Services (Plex, Alexa skill, IFTTT, etc), as well as setting Auto Backup, a Passcode or Fingerprint protection.

Right in the midst of these options is a large plus symbol. Tapping this allows you to upload photos or videos from your device or even to take a photo to be stored on the My Cloud drive.

Desktop app

WD Discovery appClicking the WD Discovery icon that will land on your desktop after downloading the app opens up a pop-up window in the right-hand side of your screen.

drivesClicking on the storage tab within the desktop app shows you your storage drives, including the My Cloud Home. Note that the C: drive does not show in this list.

appsClick the Apps tab and you will get a list of, well, apps. These are not installed on the drive but there are links to their relevant sites.

The web browser app is pretty much a large form of the mobile app.

Visual no audio

my home cloudTesting the drive out I threw on a couple of albums (best of Fleetwood Mac and Tesla’s Mechanical Resonance) and a film (Blade Runner).

First the good news. Everything uploaded from the host PC to the drive without issue.

Also, using my phone, I was able to open and watch Blade Runner. Granted, the movie didn’t like to be moved forward or back as it was streaming but it would let me just sit and watch it.

That’s more than can be said of the music files.

First I tried Fleetwood Mac. I thought this might be a big ask as these have been ripped as FLAC files.

my home cloudI clicked on a track and got the File Not Supported message and an option to Open In… Well, I was intrigued so I clicked the Open In option.

my home cloudAnd waited… and waited some more. Eventually, I clicked cancel.

Well, it might be the size of the file. Let’s try an MP3. So, over to Tesla I flicked.

my home cloudAgain, I selected a track.

my home cloudAgain, the file was not supported.

my home cloudYup, and again, I waited until I gave up.

I know, perhaps it’s my phone playing up. So, I tried the web browser app.

my home cloud webNo dice here either. Just the option to download that bad boy.

The thing is, once you’ve activated the Plex feature on the My Cloud Home you can then install any free DLNA client app on your phone or tablet. This all then works sweetly.

My only issue here is that for a drive supposedly designed to be used by those with just a smattering of tech knowledge, this seems counter-intuitive. Perhaps WD was only intending that market to save photos and Office documents?

Speeds

Given the high specifications, we were expecting this device to perform better than it initially did in our tests. Typical reads speed are in the 55-60MB/s range over a gigabit link, with write performance occasionally embarrassingly low.

crystaldiskmark wd my cloud homeHowever, the My Home Cloud does seem to enjoy large files rather than many smaller ones. If you chuck hundreds of small files at it that’s when write speeds can be reduced to sub-1MB/s levels.

Another strange foible is that you are able to copy files from external storage devices to the internal drive via the USB port and yet not back up the other way. Now, as this is a single drive device I would be inclined to want to back files up somewhere else. If you wish to do this, you can drag and drop data via your Windows file manager.

Sharing

You are able to create a folder and generate a hyperlink for that location using the web interface. You can then send this to anyone you wish to have access.

WD has also implemented a Social and Cloud import system linking Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, Facebook and Google Photos accounts. This then enables you to synchronise them with the My Cloud Home each in a separate folder.

Again, this is a one-way deal. Files added to the My Cloud Home aren’t copied out to the aforementioned cloud applications.

WD My Cloud Home review conclusion

Western Digital has done many things right with the My Cloud Home. I like the friendly design and styling of the hardware. I also applaud the ease of set up and navigation. It all makes sense and there is no need to have any NAS experience or networking knowledge. Additionally, the capacities available in the range are also extremely useful.

However, the first thing I would do is have the drive render music files natively or have Plex pre-installed as that isn’t instantly apparent.

Also, I would like to see better software optimisation of the drive. The read/write speeds were much lower than I was expecting. The thing is, if I was to bypass the WD Discovery software and access the drive via its IP address, those speeds dramatically increased.

If you are looking for a simple personal cloud storage solution that is easy to set-up and use, the WD My Cloud Home is worth checking out. It may also get faster with updates.

Price and availability

You can buy the My Cloud Home now in capacities ranging from 2TB to 8TB.

It is also available as a dual drive version, the My Cloud Home Duo. The capacities for this is 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, and a huge 20TB.

The single drive 8TB, as reviewed, can be had for £302.89 from Amazon.

GadgetyNews - Low Jargon: High Tech

canvio advance reviewToshiba recently refreshed their range of Canvio portable hard drives with the Canvio Premium, Advance and Basic models with capacities up to 3TB. I have been living with a rather swish-looking 2TB Canvio Advance drive.

I have been using a 3TB Canvio Premium for a year now. It is mostly used for backing up photos when I am doing shows just in case something happens to my laptop. It has served me very well and so I was very interested when Toshiba announced their latest models.

Canvio Advance design

canvio advance 2tbThe first thing I noticed about the drive I was sent to review was its colour. A gorgeous glossy blue. Now, I like blue, so this already had me looking at my silver Premium like it was a 70s sweater.

canvio premium and advanceThe Canvio Advance range has drive capacities of 1TB, 2TB and 3TB. By using Toshiba’s 1TB platter technology the drives are slimmer than previous models too. So the 2TB Advance I have here has a 14mm profile; that’s 5.5mm slimmer than previous versions. Above shows my Premium sat next to the less aerodynamically challenged Advance.

canvio advance portThe drive uses USB 3.0 and measures a rather pocketable 78 x 109 x 14mm. It also weighs a nicely portable 149g.

canvio advance status lightIn one corner there is a status light in a neat ring cut out. Yes, it is still blue, much to my delight.

Bundled in the box with the drive is a USB 3.0 Type A to Micro-B cable and some paperwork. The Canvio Advance’s manual also comes pre-loaded on the drive itself. No velvety carry pouch like the one I got with the Premium though.

That glossy finish, no matter how attractive it is, does tend to be a bit of a finger print magnet.

Canvio Advance performance

canvio advance rearThe new drive takes advantage of Toshiba’s latest 1TB platter technology. This not only allows for larger capacity drives in a 2.5-inch format, but also allows for the Canvio range to get more compact.

Like the rest of the new Canvio line-up, the Advance uses a standard USB3.0 interface with a 5,400rpm HDD on board.

Speed test

Just as I did with the Premium, I used CrystalMark to gain insight of the drive.

The utility stated that the drive uses a pair of 1TB platters with a spindle speed of 5,400rpm.

I used the drive straight out of the box, factory formatted as NTFS. Here are the details as shown by CrystalDiskInfo.

canvio cd infoThe sequential read/write scores are displayed by running CrystalDiskMark. I set up the Advance test just as I did with the Premium. This uses a 32GB file in order to test sequential and random read and write speeds.

toshiba canvio premium crystal markFirst, as a reminder, above is the Canvio Premium tested last year.

toshiba canvio advance crystal diskHere is how the new Canvio Advance fared. Now, I am using a newer version of Crystal Disk Mark but you can see the top rows are measuring the same. Here you can see quite an increase in performance. The writing scores all look more impressive across the board in the Advance.

On the whole the drive performed well when it came to dealing with real life file transfers.

Canvio Advance review conclusion

You might be asking yourself “who still uses portable hard drives in this, the age of the Cloud?” Well, me for a start. As I mentioned earlier, when attending multi-day shows such as Sound & Vision in Bristol and Mobile World Congress, I tend to bounce the day’s photos on to my laptop and also on to my Canvio Premium, just in case. Not only does that give me a back up, but not all hotels have super speedy internets that will enjoy taking 100+ RAW image files per day. Then there’s the video footage!

There may still be faster external HDDs out there but the Advance is smaller, lighter and faster than the Premium. So, to me at least, that makes it a worthwhile purchase.

In conclusion, it’s a good performer that offers a large capacity in a pocket-sized form-factor. Shove it in your laptop or camera bag and it will come in useful, I promise.

Price and availability

You can buy the Toshiba Canvio Advance 2TB portable hard drive now. It is available in red, white, blue, or black for £79.99 from Amazon.

The 1TB versions can be had for £59.99.

Db Equipment PU LeatherWhen you are looking for premium luggage you are generally faced with an overwhelming amount of animal-based kit. However, Db Equipment has announced a range of PU leather luggage and accessories. A perfect option for animal lovers.

I am going to avoid the subjects of veganism and vegetarianism as these tend to be trigger words. Whether you choose to remove, reduce or limit your intake of meat or dairy is your own choice. A great choice, in my personal opinion, but ultimately one you should make because you want to.

The fact is that Db Equipment has designed this awesome looking collection using PU leather for a handful of reasons. Firstly, it has a similar look and feel to real leather. Also, it looks super pro. Lastly, it is easy to clean and much more water resistant than animal hide.

The new and stylish collection is made up of three backpacks, a laptop sleeve, and essential travel accessories. All have been designed and built with Db’s unique Nordic style.

Here’s a little insight to the collection.

The Artist

Db Equipment PU LeatherFrom work to play, and everything in between, The Artist is the ultimate pack for urban adventures.

Designed with sleek vegan PU leather and thoughtful pockets for your valuables, you can feel safe and stylish while roaming the city.

With a 13-inch laptop compartment, this 22L pack will carry your daily necessities with ease and comfort.

The Ace

Db Equipment PU LeatherThis boasts nine separate storage compartments and a main pocket designed to fit a small to medium internal camera unit.

The Ace is the perfect fashion-forward pack for urban photographers.

The Scholar

Db Equipment PU LeatherThis multi-purpose backpack brings it all back to basics.

Stripped from any excessive frill, The Scholar adapts to your lifestyle essentials in a simplistic and comfortable way.

Db Equipment PU LeatherThis is my favourite pack from this collection and would equally suit trips to the skate park, campus or the gym.

I am really digging the asymmetrical hook-up system that enables you to attach the scholar to Db rolling bags.

The Proper laptop sleeve

Db Equipment PU LeatherAvailable in both 13-inch and 15-inch sizes, this sleek, low-profile sleeve will keep your laptop safe while you’re on the move.

Db Equipment PU LeatherLooks sharp.  Looks pro.

The Vain wash bag

Db Equipment PU LeatherI will admit, my Addidas freebe is looking kinda tired these days. However, in extreme contrast to what I lug around, Db’s new wash bag is elegantly crafted with lightly grained soft PU leather.

The Vain wash bag would definitely up my ‘on the road’ game. Who doesn’t need something to take care of all their toiletries with sophistication and style?

The Voyage

Db Equipment PU LeatherWho cares whether we have a blue or burgandy passport if it’s wrapped up in The Voyage passport cover?

Db Equipment PU LeatherThis covers your license to travel in protective PU leather. Furthermore, it boasts interior card pockets, and a metal clasp on the exterior. Ensure that your key to the world is secured in style.

Expeditionist luggage tag<

Db Equipment PU LeatherA little bit more classy than a bit of card on a thin elastic band.

Often overlooked until you really need it. Claim what’s yours with confidence and keep your luggage marked as well as on trend.

A must for frequent fliers!

PholioPholio is looking to put the photo album back on the bookshelf – but in a very modern way.

Pholio is launching a 21st century photo album that brings all of our online photos back to the living room bookshelf.

The intelligent album will slurp up your vast collection of online images, as well as searching your collections instantly against 20,000 pre-programmed search terms.

You can teach Pholio to recognise your Aunt Mabel or Uncle Robert (Bob’s your uncle, right?). It will then return all the relevant images.

Pholio will also store and hunt through home videos, finding the moment in your dad’s 4-hour epic video when the cat skateboarded.

Finally, before you ask, yes, Pholio also works offline.

Pholio features

pholio deskThis new British device is able to pull content from the cloud, hard drives, mobile devices and computers. It will even gather those stored on your social platforms.

Its built-in A.I. recognises 20,000 complex visual search terms and will learn based on your own collections.

This is all pretty handy as, apparently, the average person has created more than 20,000 digital photos and personal videos. Moreover, these are most likely scattered around the web.

The technology has been developed in conjunction with academics at the University of Oxford. It has been tested on the extensive Courtauld Institute collection at Somerset House, enabling historians to classify work by content.

Design

The Pholio device, shaped like a stylish photo album. Its aim is to bring all images and home videos loaded to file sharing sites such as Facebook, Google and Flickr back to a central storage unit on a home shelf.

The software in Pholio then automatically checks all images in the ‘album’ against 20,000 in-built search terms, from ‘birthday’ to ‘license plate’ and ‘house renovation’.

By keying a relevant search term into a browser on a connected TV screen, tablet, phone or laptop at home, families can search for all sorts of things in their own photo collections – from day trips to Bangor to bungie jumps in Niagara.

House trained

Pholio was trained in the lab by showing it millions of images with a wide range of content.

A clever set of deep learning algorithms, codenamed ‘Haystack’, has learnt how to create a unique summary of the contents of images.

Now, Pholio can recognise and classify faces, objects and scenes that it has never seen before.

pholio bookshelfFurthermore, there are 20,000 custom search terms are already built into Pholio. You can even teach it to recognise your friends and relatives by name.

The 20,000 search terms can still be used if the device can is run offline. However, if the box is connected to the Internet, you can search for anything (Pholio can learn new search terms on the fly based on what users search for).

A short history of our photography collections

  • 1850s The earliest photo albums created. Owners often put the albums on display and they featured ornate illustrations surrounding the images.
  • 1920s 35mm film invented

He wirelessly transmitted his cell phone pictures to more than 2,000 family, friends and associates around the world. Kahn’s wireless sharing software and camera integrated into his cell phone signalled the birth of instant visual communications. Kahn’s cell phone transmission is the first known publicly shared picture via a mobile phone.
  • 2000 The first dedicated camera phone sold in Japan
  • 2004 Launch of Flickr
  • 2005 Dixons ends 35mm film camera sales

iKlips WizardAfter successful Indiegogo campaigns for iKlips and iKlips DUO, which raised over US $560,000, ADAM elements launches its newest additions to the iKlips family. Please welcome the iKlips Wizard and the iKlips miReader 4K, which let users expand their iPhone storage with microSD cards.

iOS card reader and Lightning to USB cable in one: iKlips Wizard

iKlips Wizard

Like previous iKlips flash drives, the iKlips Wizard lets you expand your iDevice’s storage.

In addition, the new model includes a flat-braided 6 cm Lightning to USB-A cable. This means that the expanded memory can be enjoyed while charging or syncing your iOS device.

Instead of built-in memory, the iKlips Wizard has a microSD card slot for cards of up to 256 GB.

iKlips WizardThis way, you can an entire HD movie collection along on a flight, record hours of 4K video without running out of memory space, or work on professional video editing projects on the iPad Pro. When you’re done, you can then effortlessly move, copy and share data between the iOS device and other computers.

The USB end’s magnetic cap can also be used as an iPhone stand for comfortable video viewing.

Thanks to its slim Lightning end, the iKlips Wizard is compatible with even the thickest iPhone and iPad cases.

Like all other members of the iKlips family, the new model is fully MFi-certified by Apple as a product made for iPhone and iPad. So, guaranteed to comply with strict performance and manufacturing standards. It works with the iKlips app, available for free on the App Store, which manages contacts, photos, music, video data plus backups and transfers.
