Dodow sends you to sleep with light

dodow deviceStaring at the ceiling, counting sheep, watching TV til you can no longer keep your eyes open. This is a nightly ritual for many. How about staring at a blue light instead? That is what Dodow suggests.

Personally, I am in the very privileged position of being able to sleep anywhere, at any time. Perhaps that’s the silver lining of having 5 jobs and getting 6 hours max sleep per night. However, plenty of people I know suffer from not being able to drop off, or stay asleep.

A handy gadget called Dodow promises to lull you to sleep via a blue light beamed on to your ceiling.

Dodow

DodowThe small, plastic disc doesn’t look much. But, just pop it by your bedside table and let it project a blue ring that gently expands to cast a large, circular glow on the ceiling. This, then, contracts back to a pinprick of light.

This rhythmic expansion and contraction is what you use to synchronise your breathing with.

Additionally, it has a timer so you can set it to run for eight or 20 minutes. This all depends how long you wish to use it before falling asleep.

The people behind the device says that slow, ‘yogic’ breathing (six full inhalations and exhalations per minute) can dampen the body’s response to stress. Furthermore, it reduces the release of hormones such as cortisol and taking the body out of ‘fight or flight’ mode into a relaxed state where sleep can take over.

It sounds like this should work. Breathing exercises/meditation is a well known and practised by many.

The Dodow might be worth trying out if you’re unable to switch off at night.
