Garmin Fenix 5 triple helpings at CES 2017
The Fenix 5 smartwatch from Garmin has landed, apparently skipping Fenix 4. Never mind, you get three versions of this one!
Garmin have announced a trio of tracking tech-packed wearables.
The new Fenix 5 watches are all well-equipped for all-day tracking. Each are equipped with a heart rate monitor and on-board GPS – not to mention smartphone support, for notifications and such.
Size matters
The most obvious difference between this triplet of tickers is their size.
The 5S is designed with dainty wrists in mind at 42mm across. Next up is the 47mm Fenix 5 and then the girth-tastic 51mm Fenix 5X.
I am not overly endowed in the wrist-department so having the choice is great news for me. Something that cannot be said about the previous Garmin multi-sport machines.
So does stamina
It’s not just how big the face is though. Whilst each wearable offers similar features, there are some differences inside as well as the outside.
Battery life varies across the devices, with the Fenix 5 offers 14 days in smartwatch mode. Whilst you get 12 days on the 5X and eight on the 5S. You also get the bonus of pre-loaded maps on the 5X too.

You can easily switch between stylish leather and metal accessory bands to sporty silicone in seconds and without tools, thanks to the new QuickFit bands.
All of the new Fenix 5 models come preloaded with the full multisport toolset for running, hiking, swimming, biking and more.
Whether you’re on an adventure, or just in the gym, Garmin Elevate wrist heart rate technology gives users 24/7 heart rate monitoring, without needing a chest strap. In addition to the wide variety of sport profiles, all three Fenix 5 models have daily activity tracking.
Built-in navigation features include a 3-axis compass, gyroscope and barometric altimeter, as well as GPS and GLONASS support to track in more challenging environments than with GPS alone.
You can also keep training stats right at your fingertips with a performance widget that shows training status, training load and more.
Garmin Fenix 5 price and availability
You should be able buy one by March, with prices starting at US$600 (£450-ish).
