Microsoft announces free Windows 10 update
Microsoft has updated has updated Windows and not to the Windows 9 as most people were expecting, to the new Windows 10. The Windows 10 update will be free for all users of Windows 7 and Windows 8 for one year after launch, it may be extended for longer than a year but for now were just being told that it’s for a year.
Once Windows 10 has been updated, the device will be kept current and supported over the lifetime of the device. Most upgrades happen when a person upgrades their device, and at least as far as right now.
This is about moving the platform forward, and trying to avoid another Windows XP where a large chunk of their base gets out of sync with the latest versions of software, which causes developers to have to cater to the old platform and not utilize the new features.
This is a huge chance to Windows, and will move Windows into the realm of being treated as a service. Not only will it move people off the platforms much quicker it will also allow Microsoft to keep the platform moving forward in the future.
Windows 10 focuses on three key areas. According to Terry Myerson, executive VP of Microsoft’s operating system group, the first key area is the mobility of experience. In other words, you should be able to pick up where you left off on another device.
The second area is trust. They want to be able to put the customer in control. The third area is natural interactions. This includes voice, pen, gestures and your gaze. As part of this effort, Microsoft’s personal digital assistant, Cortana, will be heading to your desktop. You will be able to ask pretty much anything and get a personalised response.
