Huawei HarmonyOS 2

Huawei Watch 3 Series and new MatePad Pro Launched with HarmonyOS 2

Huawei has launched a range of smartwatches and tablets powered by its new HarmonyOS 2 operating system, including the Huawei Watch 3 Series and the Huawei MatePad Pro.

Harmony OS has been in the pipeline for a while, but now it’s hitting the ground running in its 2.0 flavour as it is powering a raft of new products.

Huawei Harmony OS 2

Huawei is pinning its hopes on HarmonyOS as becoming the Android slayer where BlackBerry, Symbian, Windows Phone, Firefox OS, et al failed. Naturally, the company has had its hand somewhat forced thanks to the ongoing political situation between the USA and China.

Harmony OS first appeared on some IoT devices and the much publicised Smart TVs. Now 2.0 boasts apps that will appear on the brand’s Huawei smartphones, such as the P40 and Mate 40, as well as tablets and watches.

HUAWEI Watch 3 Series

Huawei’s brand-new flagship smartwatch, the Huawei Watch 3 Series, features a curved glass 1.43-inch circular AMOLED display that totes a 326ppi pixel density and 316L stainless steel case. There is also a brand-new 3D rotating crown that senses different pressure levels and provides haptic feedback in response to user input.

Huawei Watch 3 Series

Naturally, there are stacks of health and fitness tracking baked in, too. The Huawei Watch 3 Series supports more than 100 workout modes. In addition to a broad range of healthcare support options, the watch can now monitor skin temperature with a new, high-precision temperature sensor. It also supports fall detection and SOS functions so that you can monitor and manage another user’s health in real-time.

The Huawei Watch 3 Pro has a quoted battery life of 21 days in ultra-long battery life mode or five in smart mode, whereas the Huawei Watch 3 can last three days in smart mode and 14 days in ultra-long battery life mode.

Connectivity comes through Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC, and eSIM, enabling you to make and receive phone calls and listen to music using the same phone number and data plan as your smartphone.

Pre-orders run from June 2nd to 17th in the UK, with the Watch 3 going on sale on June 18th priced at £349.99. As for the Pro model, that costs £499.99, and pre-orders are active between June 2nd and 27th, with the watch becoming available on June 27th.

Those who place a pre-order with a deposit – £20 for the Watch 3, £50 for the Watch 3 Pro – will get that money off their watch of choice at purchase and will be able to redeem a pair of the company’s FreeBuds Pro true-wireless earphones at the same time.

HUAWEI MatePad Pro

We’re told that the new Huawei MatePad Pro features a 12.6-inch OLED FullView Display and has bragging rights to a 90% screen-to-body ratio, the highest among all tablets currently available on the market, they say.

Huawei MatePad Pro

Every display comes with a Delta-E colour difference of less than 0.5 for incredibly high colour accuracy. It promises to deliver a crisp, colour-accurate picture that is on par with professional monitors. The Huawei MatePad Pro also has an ultra-high contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 and supports a DCI-P3 colour gamut.

Loaded with Kirin 9000 series chipsets, the MatePad Pro should deliver the goods as it is also supported by the distributed data management and task scheduling capabilities of HarmonyOS. This means that the tablet can work together seamlessly with smartphones and PCs to double your productivity and creativity in different scenarios, “whether you’re in the office or at the drawing board”.

The nifty MatePad Pro also supports multi-screen collaboration with PCs and supports cross-device file dragging and dropping, delivering a more efficient and collaborative multi-device experience.

The second-generation M-Pencil was also unveiled together with the MatePad Pro. The new smartpen features a new platinum-coated nib for high-precision handwriting and ultra-low latency, accurately differentiating between 4,096 levels of force.

The MatePad Pro is available for £499.99 and comes with a free keyboard cover and mini speaker when purchased directly from the Huawei website.

Audirvana Plus for Windows 10French company Audirvana has just announced a Windows 10 version of their reference hi-fi audio player Audirvana Plus. This new version features a totally redesigned user interface that will change the way PC users enjoy and organise their music.

Created by Damien Plisson and acclaimed by users and audio specialists around the world, Audirvana Plus is the reference player of choice for many Mac-based music fans.

When questioned about creating the Windows 10 version, Plisson told us:

After abandoning Windows for several years, I have to admit that I rediscovered this operating system with great pleasure to create this new product. I always keep in mind the same objective as for the Mac version — to obtain the best possible sound quality.”

The way that Audirvana Plus improves the sound quality is twofold. Firstly, it significantly shortens the audio signal path, and removes all noise and other electromagnetic interferences to deliver pure sound. Secondly, the player employs very high-quality algorithms, far superior to those used in digital-to-analogue converter (DAC) chips. Additionally, it performs the necessary digital processing before conversion to analogue in order to deliver perfect audio fidelity.

New features of Audirvana Plus for Windows 10

Logo - AudirvanaAudirvana Plus for Windows 10 hands you the same benefits as Audirvana Plus 3.2 for Mac. However, it also offers PC users a new, intuitive and fluid interface.

Audirvana Plus - Mini PlayerAdditionally, Audirvana Plus for Windows 10 also offers the latest developments, such as ‘View by Artists’ in addition to View by Tracks and Albums. Further additions include direct selection of the audio device on the main interface, a redesigned search engine, a new mini-player, and a choice of ASIO or WASAPI playback modes.

Audirvana Plus Windows 10Naturally, you still benefit from playback of all popular audio formats. This means that Hi-Res audio files such as FLAC, WAV, AIFF, DSD, and MQA are all good here. There is also integration of Qobuz, Tidal HiFi, and HRA-Streaming streaming services. Finally, there is also compatibility with network players that properly use the UPnP/DLNA standard.

Audirvana Plus for Windows 10 pricing

You can start with a 15-day free trial version and then move to the full version for €64 excluding taxes. Currently, the Beta version of the Windows 10 software is available through the Audirvana forum.

Your Windows 10 PC lets you go back in time up to 30 days to find your stuff, whether you were working on it earlier today, last week, or a few weeks ago.

Because much of our activity is on the go, you can even pick up what you were doing if signed into your Microsoft account while using Microsoft Edge or Office 365 on your iOS or Android device when you return to your Windows 10 PC.

Imagine looking at bathroom vanity options for that home remodel when you’re out and about on your phone, and then finishing that purchase when you’re back at your PC. Or working on a document on the bus during your commute and seamlessly picking it back up when you’re at your desk.

Focus Assist

Focus Assist helps you stay in the zone. Turn on Focus Assist whenever you want to get things done without distractions, like social media or other notifications. Or set it to turn on automatically at certain times during the day when you want focused time.

When you finish, you receive a summary of what came through, whether notifications, emails or updates, while you were heads down. If you’re waiting on a specific call or email, choose people who you want to break through.

Edge updates

You can now click the audio icon to mute and unmute a tab that is playing sound.

Books, PDFs and Reading View pages can go full-screen for a distraction-free reading experience. Shopping gets easier as your address, payment and other information can be securely saved with the option to autofill on web payment forms.

You can now clear out clutter from your printouts by printing web pages in a cleaner format with the new clutter-free printing option.

piriform ccleanerPiriform’s CCleaner software is pretty well known. I had the free version running on my tablet for a while. Recently, I was approached to take a look at their Professional version.

Piriform actually offers three CCleaner plans. The free version, as you’d expect, contains the bare bones. It has basic PC-cleaning capabilities, as well as privacy-protection tools that let you delete cookies, passwords, and other related browser files.

The next step up is the Professional plan. This builds on the free option by offering more thorough computer cleaning, real-time system monitoring, automatic history cleaning, and automatic software updates.

pro plusFinally, above that, is the top-of-the-line Professional Plus. Here you also get some monitor hardware as well as hard drive defragmentation, and file recovery software. The latter two are not part of the CCleaner suite though.

CCleaner Pro

pc cleaning kitSo, I was sent a software key along with a computer cleaning pack. A nice touch and more than a little hint that now is a great time for some Spring Cleaning. Clever.

The main benefits of this first level paid for service over the ‘freemium’ version are the Real-time Monitoring, Scheduled Cleaning, Automatic Updates and Premium Support.

Set up

CCleaner is compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP computers.

You download the software directly from the Piriform site. It’s quite a lightweight app and it both downloads and installs quickly.

I installed it on to my laptop, just in case something terrible happened. I am mildly aware of their malware issues last year. Thankfully, these have all been sorted. I hope.

CCleaner ProOnce installed you are given a variety of options, including shortcuts.

CCleaner ProNext, you are invited to run CCleaner Pro. Naturally, this is exactly what I did.

CCleaner Pro in use

CCleaner ProThe app’s left-side navigation column houses the tools that let you clean either the system files or applications.

CCleaner ProAs well as covering Windows browsers and such, flicking over to the Applications tab, you will find your other browsers and installed applications too.

CCleaner ProAdditionally, the included Registry Cleaner lets you repair the often-troubled Windows registry.

Clean sweep

Regardless of what you’re fixing to repair, you begin by initiating a system scan to identify problem areas. After that, you click Run Cleaner or Fix Selected Issues to finish the job.

CCleaner ProOnce CCleaner Professional has worked its magic, it will display how much hard drive space it has freed up.

A cleaning can result in several gigabytes of reclaimed storage. In fact, CCleaner Professional freed 1.2GB and I consider myself quite good at keeping the junk down. The amount of dead Windows Registry files that were listed was impressive. I dread to think what space can be freed on my main machine.

Extras

Real-time Monitoring

This has CCleaner running in the background. It will then prompt you whenever it ’s possible to free a certain amount of space (you can set the amount by clicking Options and Monitoring).

However, having the program running all the time seems to slow my system down. It also appeared to make booting up take longer. Unfortunately, this could negate the speed you managed to reclaim through cleaning your system.

Personally, I’d suggest unticking the three boxes within Monitoring to stop CCleaner running in the background

Scheduled Cleaning and Automatic Updates

Guess what these do? The former lets you schedule scans for a convenient time, while the latter allows CCleaner to update itself automatically as new versions are released.

These are no doubt handy to have, but I’m not sure if these should only feature in a premium version. Flipping that around, would you pay extra just for the ability to schedule software updates?

Premium Support

Finally, this appears to be a queue-jump ticket that bounces you up the line ahead of those free version-users should you need help from CCleaner’s support team.

If you are a freemium user, head on over to Piriform’s Community Forum (https://forum.piriform.com). They often have answers to your questions 😉

CCleaner Pro review conclusion

CCleaner Professional does deliver respectable performance improvements to your PC. It certainly makes the process of cleaning your drive(s) a lot easier. Basically, you can free-up space without really having any technical know-how; and this is where CCleaner shines.

Is the Pro version worth the investment over the free one? Well, on the hand, fifteen notes isn’t that much. However, on the other, is real time monitoring and scheduling updates worth 3 pints of beer and a packet of crisps? Well, that’s a decision only you can make.

Price and availability

You can purchase the CCleaner Professional software application right now for £14.95 direct from their website.

google android oreoGoogle has released the latest version of its Android mobile operating system, which is named after the Oreo chocolate biscuits.

Android 8.0 was released at 19:50 BST to coincide with a solar eclipse visible on the east coast of the United States. Dubbed Oreo, this marks the second time Android has linked with a confectionery brand, the previous being KitKat, of course.

A favourite in my home as Oreos are accidentally vegan. That’s all well and good, but what does it mean of the Google mobile operating system (OS)?

android oreo eclipseIt is now up to phone manufacturers to decide whether to make the new software available on their existing devices, although many will pre-install it on their new releases.

[youtube id=”twZggnNbFqo”]

Naturally, Google’s own Nexus and Pixel phones are expected to be the first to receive the software update. New versions of Android can be slow to roll out depending on manufacturers and networks though. Apparently, only 14% of Android devices run the previous OS, Nougat.

Oreo updates

android oreo screen in screenFirstly, Oreo adds a new ‘picture-in-picture’ mode that allows a video to be played over the top of other apps in a floating window. This puts Android in-line with manufacturers such as Samsung and LG that have modified Android to include this feature.

Android Oreo also introduces measures to help people manage the volume of notifications on their devices, which has been described as “notification diarrhoea”. Sounds messy.

App developers will now be able to split notifications into categories. This handy as you will be able to block some types of alert by category, while still receiving others.

Previously, Android users could only allow all or block all notifications from each app.

Other new features

“Smart copy-and-paste” highlights an entire address, telephone number or web addresses when people try to copy it. This should be easier than dragging those little blue arrows around.

You can limit how many system resources apps can use while they are running in the background. This offers more control over memory and battery use.

Android Oreo will also introduce a universal auto-fill system, which will allow password managers and other apps to directly fill login dialogues and other text boxes without the need to resort to accessibility features.

android oreo emjoisLastly, there is a redesigned set of emojis. These look more like the ones seen on Apple’s iOS. In the picture above, the old blobs can be seen on the left, the new ones on the right.

If you’re feeling handy, the Android 8.0 system images are up for the Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel C, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, and Nexus Player.

Travice app screen

Travice app screenWe have seen multiple tracking devices but Travice is different.

Travice places itself as an all in one mobile security and family locator app. Best of all, it is on its way to the UK.

The company boasts that this is the industry first family orientated safety and security app that cannot be tampered with.

This new app provides a number of unique additional features designed exclusively to address the flaws in other similar apps.

Travice app features

Amongst others, those advanced features includes the ability to prevent an Android device from being switched off. I know that switching off a phone so it can’t be tracked is an obvious flaw, but many apps fail to prevent this. Travice also disables the top bar drag-down option to prevent the device being placed in flight mode.

Not only that, it also disables the top bar drag-down option to prevent the device being placed in flight mode.

Travice security appFurthermore, this app prevents the device from being placed on silent. and remotely activates both front and rear cameras for both images and video clips.

Say cheese

My favourite feature is that it remotely activates both front and rear cameras for both images and video clips. There is also the neat thing of, if you mark your device as missing, the next time someone tries to unlock it, the app takes a snap of the person holding it.

You are able to set the geo-fencing feature to alert you when people enter or leave a designated area (such as the kids returning home from school). There’s also a help alert, which automatically notifies 6 of your contacts of your location and need for assistance.

[youtube id=”vHInHcL6h3k”]

Words

Travice co-founder, Aleem Butt commented:

“We live in a very busy world with mobile phone theft continuously increasing. In the UK alone around 2000 mobiles are reported stolen daily – virtually none of these are ever recovered. Additionally, here in the UK a person is reported missing to the police every 2 minutes. We realised that there’s so much more we could be doing to improve the safety of our families and our property, so the idea behind ‘Travice’ was born.”

traviceFouzy Barahman, Travice co-founder added:

The ‘Travice’ app has taken a range of common features available on other mobile apps and taken them to another level of safety and security. All the other apps fail straight away on the fact that from one button, I can enable aeroplane mode or turn it off – instantly stopping the app from working. This was just one of the many issues we’ve designed out of ‘Travice’. The result is the world’s first fully robust all-in-one security and safety app.”

Travice availability and price

Travice is due to appear on Kickstarter in less than 40 days. You read about it first here 😉

More details to be had on their website.

talent not included screenshotFrima, Canada’s leading independent game developer, has announced that Talent Not Included will launch on August 30th. This action/combat platformer promises to be humour-filled and will be available for download on Steam for Mac and PC.

The new title is set in the fantasy land of Notthatmuchfurther – yeah, you can already tell what the sense of humour behind Talent Not Included is going to be like, can’t you?

The story

The story involves three monsters: Zordok, Derp, and Kevin. This trio are all huge fans of slaughter, bloodbaths, and Shakespeare. You with me so far?

One night, as they were bored out of their minds, they decided to put on their own play. Pretty standard stuff thus far.

Unfortunately, nothing went as planned…
[youtube id=”dSRy9FPvcLM”]
That’s mostly because Zot, a demonic critic hired for the occasion, chose three mediocre actors with strong personalities, hoping to sow hell on stage for his own and the public’s amusement.

You take control of these actors in hopes of making a nice profit out of your marvelous performance!

Break a leg!

Game play

As well as having a rather theatrical setting sprinkled with absurd humour, you will face cylinder-based platform levels. There promises to be plenty of combat action too with the opportuntiy for local co-op with your buddies.

talent not included announced on SteamSo, what you get with Talent Not Included is an action/combat platformer where mechanical soldiers, animals, hard-headed monsters, and rotating cylinders will challenge you in one of the most demanding plays to ever hit the stage!

Price and availability

Opening night is August 30th and for the best seat in the house you’ll need to hand over $12.99.

I am hoping to get a preview of them in dress rehearsal for review so stay tuned.

onoff is based around a really simple idea, as most great things are. The service allows people to set up as many phone numbers as they need, all on one phone.

onoff’s founder Khris Taïg is perhaps best known for rollerblading off of the Eiffel Tower. The idea came to him after being hospitalised when he was flattened by a falling Hollywood starlet (Mila Kunis, he caught her) whilst working as a stunt double.  During some forced leave he came up with the concept for a privacy protecting telecoms company after witnessing the challenges people in the movie industry have in keeping their numbers private.

Why would I need onoff?

Just imagine that you’re a celebrity who’s fed up with using burner phones whenever you’re on location. Or, more realistically, you’re a regular person who has had enough of nuisance calls.

The ability to have multiple numbers, for different purposes, under full instant control changes many things about the way we can use our phones. It could be handy in my line of work, for instance. I could give a different number to PR contacts that I could switch on or off with a flick, but still get access, and be accessible to, personal calls.

Even better is that those numbers can be switched on and off as they need to; one number for work, one for family, one for dating, one for eBay, one in France, one in America etc.

Setting up a number literally takes seconds, and unlike VoIP services onoff uses the GSM network, so it has great call quality and is highly reliable.

onoff in use

I was really impressed by just how easy the whole thing is to use and how quick a new number can be generated.

onoff StartIt was merely a case of selecting a new number and, boom, sorted. Granted, you need to have some credits ready.

onoff services

Your phone lines, contacts, messages etc. can be accessed from any device, anywhere – so, if your phone is flat you can log in on a PC or a friend’s phone.

onoff Menu optionsEvery number has its own profile within the app which means no accidental potentially embarrassing cross over between numbers. This means they’ll run a separate contact list, voicemail greeting, profile picture, email address etc.

Menu status effectsYou even get a “stealth” mode. This lets you choose to discreetly hide your additional numbers and password protect access to them. This mitigates the risk of snoopers or when you let your child play with your handset – no embarrassing emails or texts being sent to your boss!

I bet onoff costs a bit though

The onoff app is actually free.  You are the able to set up multiple phone lines on your mobile for as long as  you need them.

As I have already mentioned, onoff are a registered telecoms company and uses the GSM network. This ensures that call quality is high and the service reliable. Each customer receives a test line, free for 3 months, through which they can receive calls and SMS. Making calls or setting up additional lines requires the purchase of credits.

Get onoff now

Onoff has so far raised 5 million Euro to transform the privacy and usability of mobile phones, and it has already won 700,000 users in France.

Android and Apple versions available now. Check the website for more details.

itcher app phone

itcher app phoneThe itcher app sounds like something you’d turn to after having an allergic reaction but this smart software will actually guide you to your next thing.

This app could well be less irritating than it sounds, especially if you’re wondering what to watch, read, listen to or play next.

You’re probably familiar with the situation. Sat there, struggling to find a good movie to watch, scrolling through an endless list of disappointing titles.

itcher promises to give you personalised recommendations you’re sure to love!

The itcher app provides accurate film, book, music and game recommendations based entirely on your individual taste.

In a world where Blockbuster Video has been replaced by Netflix, Borders bookstores by Amazon, and Virgin Megastore by Spotify, consumers have an overwhelmingly large catalogue of titles to consume, but increasingly struggle with what to stream. I call this ‘choice paralysis’.

Granted, most of these new services have their own recommendation systems, but they are largely built on related items which might not be the best way to discover something new. By linking real people, rather than items, those hidden gems can finally be found.

itcher’s growing community, in conjunction with advanced collaborative filtering, is said to provide personalised recommendations on films, books, music and games. By simply browsing and rating titles, the itcher app will generate a list of recommendations you’ll be sure to love.

This free-to-download app gives recommendations based entirely on your individual taste. Rating is quick and fun: get your first results after just rating five titles.

itcher app bannerOnce you discover a new title that you like the sound of, you can add it to a list for later. If you want to know more about your recommendations, itcher provides all the relevant information you need: reviews, ratings, similar titles, trailers, and much more.

You can also follow users with similar interests and track their activities such as reviews and ratings as well as becoming part of a quickly growing community.

The itcher app is available for both iOS and Android devices

itcher is the brainchild of Swedish Internet Entrepreneur Daniel Rovira. As a fan of independent cinema, Daniel recognised that there wasn’t really any dedicated place to discover new films and hidden gems.

There was a void left after most high-street stores went under which has not been properly substituted in the online world. Most online services rely on similar items, making it difficult for people to find hidden gems that they are sure to love”.

Daniel instead wanted to connect like-minded people to generate personalised recommendations, and itcher was born.

You can find more information, and create your own profile, at itcher.com.
