Google Nexus 7 Tablet Pictures and Prices Leaked

The great reveal of Google’s Nexus 7 tablet and its Android Jelly Bean operating system are just a couple days away but that hasn’t prevented more details slipping out about what you can expect from the 7-inch slate.

Gizmodo down under has uncovered a training document which lays bare intimate details of the Nexus tablet.

Tablet cobblers, Asus, have weaved together a 7-inch, 1,280×800 touchscreen powered along by a 1.3GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor, GeForce 12-core graphics chip, and 1GB of RAM.

The leaked specs seem to confirm that the Nexus 7 will ditch a few features to keep the cost down. It won’t have rear camera – just a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera for video calls, and will only connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi, not 3G.

It will, however, sport NFC for Beam sharing and Google Wallet functions.

Those shavings do make savings as the 8GB model will cost $200 (£130), and the 16GB version will cost $250 (£160). As per usual, don’t go expecting a fair dollar to sterling conversion here – the swapping of $ to £ will be more realistic.

The Nexus 7 will be the first tablet to bear the Google Nexus brand, which appears subtly across the back.

The 7-inch form factor and low-cost will naturally put the Nexus 7 in to the ring with the Amazon Kindle Fire rather than the more expensive iPad and upcoming Microsoft Surface.

It looks like Google may pip the Fire to a UK release, even though the States is looking at the HD version already, and may well gazzump the Kindle to the British market.

More will be revealed on Wednesday at 5.30pm, when the Google I/O keynote kicks off.
