6.1-inch 2018 iPhone to wear full metal jacket
The seemingly never-ending iPhone rumours continue to churn out. However there have been a couple of interesting tid-bits surfacing lately.
A few weeks ago there was word from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo intimated that we could see three new full-screen iPhones with notched displays launch in 2018. These would line-up with a trio of screen sizes, as well as price points. It was suggested that there would be a model sporting a 6.5-inch OLED display, and another with a 5.8-inch OLED like the iPhone X. Additionally, there would also be one equipped with a 6.1-inch LCD display.
Metal back solid
Now, there’s a report by Nikkei that says that the LCD model “will probably sport a metal back”. Furthermore, this model will be “available in several colours.”
This information comes by way of the usual “single unnamed source”. This mysterious source also supports Kuo’s claim of two premium OLED-based iPhones.
Interestinly, the latest story differs slightly as to the dimensions of what would presumably be the Plus model.
Nikkei’s source statest that there’s “one about 6.3-inches long and the other 5.8-inches.”
Good news for all
There is no doubt that the glassy fronts and rears on the three latest iPhone models are very swish but the costs are high.
Repairing the iPhone X’s screen costs $279 (£212), more than twice the price of an iPhone 6 screen replacement ($129), and about 65 % higher than the iPhone 8’s screen ($169).
Furthermore, the glass on the back of the iPhone 8 is more expensive to fix than its front display.
So, equipping the rumored 6.1-inch LCD phone with an aluminium back would make it a better proposition as the base model iPhone.
Not only will it save Apple a few quid, it will also be cheaper to own.
