Lanmodo ProI have received an email about the Lanmodo Pro. The header stated that this is a “four-season car tent”. Well, that caught my attention.

The Lanmodo Pro provides all-in-one vehicle protection; ensuring shelter from intense weather and temperatures of up to 140° Fahrenheit.

I will admit, I get notified about so many crowdfunding campaigns that most get deleted unless they a) look like a viable product b) I’d be tempted to pledge c) it looks like a product that solves an actual problem.

Well, this falls in to two of those categories with a flexible, “maybe” for the third.

Additionally, I like that this not only protects your car, but can also do the same for people. Furthermore, it can charge devices with a USB connection such as smartphones, cameras, and tablets. Users can also plug in LED lights, thanks to an in-built lithium-ion battery.

Sleek and Strong

Lanmodo ProMade of a strong fiberglass base, it is designed to withstand wind speeds up to 30mph. It also protects from inclement weather including hail and snow.

A reflective polyester film protects against extreme heat to keep the vehicle up to 97° Fahrenheit cooler on hot days. This 15 foot tent is large enough to protect sedans, trucks, SUVs, dune buggies, motorcycles and more.

Hassle-free setup

Lanmodo ProForget bulky, complicated car covers. The Lanmodo Pro is user-friendly with its remote control system and anti-theft straps. A powerful suction base and wind ropes keep it secure no matter the weather.

The initial installation takes just 30 seconds, and it will automatically fold and unfold in only eight seconds.

It looks pretty well designed for portability and appears to be lightweight and compact enough to pack in the boot when not in use.

It can be recharged via the 12v car power outlet in five hours or a wall outlet in three hours.

All-In-One Travel Companion

lanmodo transformsLanmodo has created a range of versatile add-ons, such as additional flaps to create an outdoor canopy, or a stand to transform it into an umbrella.

It also keeps your devices charged while on the move with the in-built power source with USB port.

Gaby Lee, Lanmodo’s CEO, explains:

We wanted to create something strong and versatile for a car of any size to be protected in harsh and everyday climates.”

Price and availability

The Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign kicks off on 20 March with a target of $10,000 to put the device into mass production.

It has an SRP of $499 and comes with one year warranty.

GEEK DreamlandDreamland Margate has programmed workshops and events to support its huge festival of play and games, GEEK.

GEEK is a three-day festival of play and games. Launched in February 2012, it is held annually in Margate, Kent. Part of the festival’s activity will involve working with invention kit Makey Makey’s Vice President of Education, Tom Heck, at Dreamland Margate and King’s College London.

GEEK at Dreamland

The GEEK festival is a half term family event and brings people together to meet, make and play.

There are hundreds of games to play as well as workshops, talks and demonstrations. Visitors can expect board games, card games, real world games, VR games and hundreds of video games to play on original consoles.

The event traces the development of video games from the 1980’s right up to new releases.

Special areas at the festival in 2018 will include the Boardgame Boardwalk, Indie Zone, tournament feature and VR lounges.

Activities include a Cosplay Masquerade, VR masterclasses, robot games, workshops and talks as well as craft activities. There will be special activities for under 5’s on Sunday.

GEEK Dreamland Margate 20186 February

GEEK is hosting a workshop with Tom Heck at Dreamland. This is aimed at educators working with young people in schools, alternative provisions, students and artists.

Using the award-winning Makey Makey invention kit, participants will learn how to teach skills including making and design thinking.

The workshop has been delivered by Makey Makey throughout the US and now for the first time in the UK.

7/8 February

Two GEEK Lab school days will see 250 pupils from 12 schools in East Kent attend a free education event organised by the festival in partnership with the Kent and Medway STEM learning team and Kent County Council.

There will be a range of activities with the aim of raising self-awareness and aspirations in young people. Furthermore, there will be a particular focus on the skills and attitudes required for employment within the industries that feature at GEEK. Activities will include coding and animation.

10 February

In partnership with Computing at School (CAS), GEEK will host a one-day workshop, ‘Train the Trainer’ with Tom Heck. This is for educators who introduce STEM through physical computing and will be held at King’s College London.

16-18 February – GEEK: Meet Make Play

Finally, the main event! As GEEK itself fuses together games and play with learning, the event will have learning opportunities throughout.

Margate-based digital artists Genetic Moo, who are also present at the school days, will showcase their commission for GEEK. Also, there will be activities with Sphero, Makey Makey and more.

Local colleges and universities, as well as people of all ages who attend the festival, are invited to look at the creative skills that come together to make a game. This includes coding, narrative, musical composition, art and design, resource management and branding.

Additionally, there will be extra making activities for families on Sunday.

Words

Victoria Barrow-Williams, Education and Community Officer at Dreamland Margate said:

GEEK and Dreamland are working together to raise aspirations, deliver skills and employment opportunities, and to put the fun back into learning. We recognise that digital confidence and competence is a basic life skill and are looking forward to working with many different groups in the community and beyond.

Dreamland is a pioneering cultural destination for education. We are working hard to provide a stand-out educational programme with credible content that may not otherwise be accessible in the South East. There is so much potential for learning at Dreamland as a destination and with the events and content that we showcase. We plan to strengthen our working partnerships with educational institutions throughout 2018.”

xtorm limitless

xtorm limitless 10000 reviewXtorm has introduced a number of new powerbanks in to their range. However, it was the rugged, IP68 waterproof-rated Limitless 10000 that caught my eye.

The Xtorm Limitless (AL421, if we’re being formal) boasts 10,000mAh of charging power through a pair of USB ports. It also comes with the usual emergency torch function.

However, it’s its waterproofing and go-anywhere military standard ruggedness that sets it apart from the others.

Xtorm Limitless 10000 design

xtorm limitless powerbank topThe Limitless Power Bank has an extremely strong, shock-absorbing housing.

Within that tough exterior lives a 10,000mAh battery.

Xtorm limitless uncoveredThe charger has two USB outputs, enabling you to charge two mobile devices at once.

xtorm limitless coveredThese, the micro USB port for recharging the powerbank, and torch are all protected beneath a flap. It is this very flap that has the task of keeping out water.

xtorm limitless indicator lightsAtop the textured surface of the Limitless are four indicator lights.

xtorm limitless battery buttonThese show you how much power the battery has left at the press of the button on the right corner.

xtorm limitless light buttonOn the left corner is the button for the torch.

Xtorm limitless sideAt the other end of the powerbank is a slot to loop a strap through and attach the bundled carabiner clip. Now you can fix it to your rucksack, belt, or whatever you like.

Moreover, it only weighs 340 grams and measures 153 x 85 x20mm.

Xtorm Limitless 10000 performance

The AL421 has not only been awarded an IP68 rating, it’s done time in the military too. Well, it has been tested under extreme conditions according to Military Standard 810-G. This is a test used to ensure products are suitable for the American military forces.

Charging

This Xtorm Power Bank Limitess is highly efficient and loses the least possible energy during the charging process.

Thanks being equipped with an APM-chip, the powerbank automatically balances the correct charging speed. Furthermore, it efficiently divides the power between the attached devices.

Finally, it has a high input and high outputs. These features make it possible to charge the connected device as fast as possible and recharge the powerbank itself on high speed. As you will have noticed, one port is rated at 5V/1A, and the other at 5V/2.4A.

Recharging

With that battery size you are able to recharge a tablet once, or a smartphone up to 5 times. To be honest, I think 3-4 charges of most phones these days will be more realistic. Still, that’s pretty handy.

xtorm limitless reviewAs the powerbank doesn’t have anywhere to stow the natty little bundled braided USB cable, you have to remember to pack it. Most of the phones in my house currently use USB-C, so it might be worth stocking up as it comes with a microUSB/USB-A cable. However, that’s hardly a deal breaker.

Torch

xtorm limitless torchMost powerbanks appear to come packing a torch. Most of the time I see this as being pointless. But, on this Mil-spec, waterproof, survivalist battery, it makes total sense. Press the torch button twice, you set it off in SOS mode. Great if you happen to have got stuck half-way up a cliff face trying to get a mobile signal.

Is it actually waterproof?

xtorm limitless moistenedAs odd as this experiment was (dunking an electrical device), it had to be done.

Here is the Xtorm Limitless in a bowl of water.

[youtube id=”cf2PnMZPweI”]

Now, the IP68 Rating means that it’s protected against water ingress to a maximum depth of 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes, as well as being protected against dust ingress.

xtorm limitless wetNow, my bowl wasn’t quite 1.5 metres deep and the powerbank wasn’t left in the bowl for half-an-hour. However, after taking some snaps, I did put the bank back in the bowl.

I left the “business end” submerged for another 15 minutes whilst I made and drank a cuppa. I am glad to say that the powerbank still worked, until it ran out of charge. It did recharge fine and is still living as I type.

Xtorm Limitless 10000 review conclusion

The Xtorm Limitless AL421 10,000mAh powerbank is a toughy. It looks the business but also appears to be able to back its claims up.

I am always nervous when I have to dunk a review device in water to test the maker’s claims out. Not having dealt with Xtorm before, I was unsure as to how my testing would turn out. Thankfully, all was well.

Yes, there larger capacity powerbanks out there – for instance my current favourite is the 30,000mAh beast from Aukey. The thing is, that’s quite heavy for shoving in a backpack.

This is where the Xtorm Limitless excels. It only weighs 340 grams and you don’t have to worry about stowing it away somewhere dry. Just hang it off your bag and it will be fine.

Outdoorsy or a festival fiend? This is the powerbank for you.

Price and availability

The AL421 Power Bank Limitless 10000 is €89 (around £80).

You can buy it now direct from the Xtorm website.

Xtorm offers a two years guarantee on all its products.

peli 3410Peli has announced additions to their awesome torch range. Introducing the Peli 3410M (Magnet) LED and the ATEX Certified Peli 3415MZ0 Zone 0 (Cat.1).

OK, so Peli would rather I call these “advanced portable lighting tools”, but they are torches. Granted, they are rather snazzy torches, but they are torches all the same.

They are also, as you would expect from a Peli product, pretty hardy.

These torches are up for lighting any situation. They come packing an articulating head that changes the light angle, a magnetic clip for hands-free lighting and dual spot/flood beams.

Peli’s latest lighting tools

The 3410M photoluminescent torch is ideal for anything from industrial, construction and electrical to mechanics or plumbing.

Whereas its buddy, the ATEX safety-certified 3415MZ0 model, is the perfect choice for using in hazardous areas by professionals. Think Oil and Gas, Fire and Rescue, Petrochemicals, Offshore, and Military. Those kind of situations. But, saying that, there’s nothing stopping regular folk like me and you getting tooled up as well.

Features

peli 3415mzoTo focus brightness where it’s needed, these new multitasking work lights are designed with a 90 degree articulating head. This converts the light from a handheld position to a variable right-angle light.

They also include three lighting options: flood (wide), spot (focused) or flood/spot combined (which allows for both closed space visibility and distance lighting).

The integrated clip easily attaches to a pocket or vest for easy hands-free illumination. Additionally, both models feature a powerful magnet that adheres to nearly any metal surface. This makes it handy to stick to car bonnets, conduits or water lines.

Both models carry a submersible IPX8 ingress protection which allows use in the most inclement conditions, run on 3 AA batteries (not included) and are covered by Peli’s legendary lifetime warranty (where applicable by law).

Peli 3410M

peli-3410m torchThe Peli 3410M model offers three high performance lighting modes: high, medium and low.

When set on the highest mode, it projects a powerful 653 lumens and delivers a beam distance of 184 meters. A run time of 61 hours is provided in the low mode. This torch is available in a “glow in the dark” photoluminescent material, making it easy to locate whenever the lights go out.

Peli 3415MZO

peli 3415Mz0 professional torchWith the ultimate safety certification of ATEX Zone 0 (Category 1), the Peli 3415MZ0 provides the security needed for almost any hazardous location.

Offered in a “high visibility yellow” colour, it generates over 336 lumens, providing up to 15 hours of runtime as well as a beam distance of up to 135 meters.

 Price and availability

There are currently no prices available for these brand new torches. However, you can get more information at http://Peli.com

Safy whiteSafy has announced the smartest, safest, and most stylish bag on the market.

This bag is also a portable safe. It features built-in technology to prevent personal belongings from being stolen and ensures valuables are protected in one place.

Safy features a three-digit security combination lock or even a fingerprint module. These will ensure that only the bag’s owner (or authorised users) have access to the contents inside.

The advanced security features also allows users to easily lock their bag and attach the cut-resistant strap to an existing object (beach chair, suitcase, etc.). This not only protects it from being removed, but it also has an automatic alarm.

Alarm

When activated, the motion sensor inside the bag triggers an alarm within five seconds of being picked. This will notify the owner, and everyone else in earshot, that the bag is being stolen.

Safy blackWhile the owner is carrying the bag, the motion sensor can be turned off to prevent the alarm from sounding.

Safy smart bag

In addition to the technology guarding the bag’s contents, Safy’s design protects the owner’s valuables with an aluminium and polycarbonate frame that is water resistant and durable strap.

safy interiorThe bag also features a radio-frequency identification (RFID)-safe pocket to protect owners from passive skimming of RFID-enabled cards or passports, and a power bank so users can easily charge their electronics.

Words

Andrej Brumec, Founder of Safy said:

While there are many portable safes available on the market right now, Safy is the only option that has built-in technology and security functions that can be used for everyday activities. Portable safes should be able to go everywhere with the owner while making it impossible to steal, and that’s why we invented something that was a step ahead of the competition. Safy is a beautifully designed bag that can not only be used at the beach, while traveling or for any other scenario, but also features multiple levels of protection to provide the owner with peace of mind.”

Price and availability

Safy is available for pre-order starting at $79 for the basic model with the three-digit lock.

$119 gets you the smart model with the three-digit lock, motion sensor, alarm and 5.000 mAh power bank. Opt for the $189 smart plus model and get the fingerprint module, motion sensor, alarm and 10.000 mAh power bank.

The bag will be available in black or white, and will begin shipping in Spring of 2018. You can get involved now through their Kickstarter page.

aukey pb-p5 solar charger backpack

aukey pb-p5 solar chargerThere are times where you will not be anywhere near a wall socket, or walls for that matter. Here we take a look at a phone and tablet charger from Aukey that harness the power of the sun.

Camping essentials used to comprise of a tent, camping stove a sleeping bag and a bed roll. Now you have to keep in mind all the tech that has become essentials too – especially if camping at festivals!

That’s not the only time where packing a solar charger is of use though. Renewable energy is getting to be more and more important too. What better way than using the sun to charge your tech? It’s free, clean and, thanks to the Aukey PB-P5, pretty efficient.

Aukey PB-P5 solar charger design

Unpacking the Aukey portable solar charger it struck me how well built it seemed. It is also quite compact.

Folded up, it measures 31cm wide, by 18cm deep, by around 3.5cm high. It weighs just over a kilo.

aukey solar charger openUnfasten the sturdy velcro and unfurl this pack and you get a four-panel charging device that measures 93 x 31 x 1.5 cm. That’s four banks of solar panels. Each section actually appears to be comprised of two connected panels.

aukey solar charger bundleThe PB-P5 comes bundled with a USB to microUSB cable and four aluminium carabiners. The latter are so you can utilise the four metal grommets punched in to the heavyweight canvas of the charger and hang this thing up. I guess you could also attach it to your backpack for charging as you hike.

aukey solar charger standsAs this is designed to stand facing the sun it also has a pair of stands folded away. Just unfasten the nylon strips and refasten them to the base of the stands and point the panels towards the sun. Sorted.

aukey solar charger usb portsUnderneath the pocket, again more velcro here, you will find the two USB outputs. This pocket is also handy for stashing your cables.

It’s all very neat and feels rugged enough for a life outdoors, although one of the panels on my review device was scratched when I recieved it. However, this did not appear to effect its performance at all.

Aukey PB-P5 charger performance

Fitted with four solar panels made of PET laminated high resistance PVC makes the product waterproof. Granted, the USB ports are not, but a plastic bag could prove a handy, yet inelegant solution to this.

aukey solar charger chargingThose four 7w panels add up to the ability to absorbed 28w of solar energy. This converts to five amps of charging power split between the two USB ports, or about 2.4 amps per port.

Aukey says that the solar unit has a power conversion efficiency rate of 23.5% which is quite impressive.

Plug and charge

To use the PB-P5 solar charger you need sun and to have your phone and/or tablet plugged in. The charger has no means of storing the power of Ra itself.

aukey solar charger insideWhat I did realise, however, is that if I plugged in my powerbank to the charger, problem solved.

Other than that, you can plug in your phone and stow it away in that velcroed pocket whilst it charges.

Charging speeds

Over the last few days in London we have been spoilt by blazing sunshine.

aukey solar charger charging closeWith the 2.4 amps output in good sunlight, my phone and tablet charged at the same rates as they would indoors hooked up to the grid.

I was really impressed by that. However, moving it in to more shaded areas, performance dropped – as you would expect.

I liked having the option to sit it up on its flip out feet or hanging it from branches using the carabiners. You can even fold it in to a pyramid-shape. I am not sure if that will impress Ra enough to send more sun your way though.

I also tested it by leaving it hanging from my car window with the charging port inside.

Aukey PB-P5 solar charger review conclusion

If you regularly head out away from civilisation, enjoy music festivals, or just want a cleaner way of charging your gadgets, then the Aukey solar charger will certainly suit you.

Yes, you do need sunshine, but I have been leaving it in the office window hooked up to a powerbank for free energy and it has worked fine.

aukey solar charger compactI find that the Aukey PB-P5 does exactly as it promises and at a reasonable price. Add in that the panels are waterproof (great for the British weather and all) and it packs up small enough to fit in a backpack, then the PB-P5 solar charger should become another one of your festival/camping essentials.

aukey 30000 mah power bank reviewSome buy their mobile devices for their speedy chips and awesome screens. For others, battery life is a deal breaker. If you belong to the first camp then this PB-T11 30,000mAh power bank from Aukey will be of interest.

Powerful processors, bright and large screens combined with ultra-thin bodies makes stamina an issue for our portable gadge.

Carrying around an emergency charger, or power bank, is becoming a way of life for most tech users.

There are those emergency chargers that will give your phone enough juice to ping off a “my phone is dying, see you in 15 minutes” text. Others, what I’d class as power banks, will fully charge your phone and/or tablet more than once.

We have been sent an Aukey PB-T11 to put through its paces.

Aukey PB-T11 power bank design

This portable charger is quite compact, measuring 150 x 82 x 28mm but it is surprisingly hefty. Tipping the scales at 552g, you will notice it in your bag. Saying that, for a 30,000 mAh battery pack, that’s much lighter than it could’ve been.

aukey pb-t11 power bank top angleIts dimensions fit well in one hand and is small enough to slip in to the pocket of a rucksack or laptop bag.

The PB-T11 is clothed in no-nonsense black plastic. Aluminium, or more exotic materials would add to the aesthetics but also to the price. I don’t think I’ve ever bought a battery because it looks pretty.

The Aukey power bank is bundled with an information leaflet and a short USB Type-C cable.

aukey pb-t11 power bank portsAt one end of the device you will find four ports. Two for charging the power bank (Lightning or microUSB), the other two are for charging your tech by the PB-T11. The two outputs are both of the full-sized USB Type-A variety, one being equipped with Quick Charge 3.0 tech.

As seems to be the practice with most power banks, you get a little LED torch which can be switched on by long-pressing the power button.

That power button also indicates how much charge the bank has left. It turns red to indicate a battery level below 30%, green for anything between that and 70%, and white for anything above 70%.

It feels solid and I like the fact you can charge two devices at a time.

Aukey PB-T11 power bank performance

You can recharge the PB-T11 by Lightning or microUSB connector. If you use both at the same time it will charge even faster. This covers iOS and Android users, as most will have those cables to hand.

Output

The output connectors are both USB Type-A. The charger comes with a A to C USB cable, which suits me. Again, most people will have a Type-A USB cable that terminates in either a microUSB, Lightning or Type-C connector. I know I have a draw full of USB cables.

aukey pb-t11 power bank undersideBack to those output jacks. One is coloured orange and the other green.

The first one is a Quick Charge 3.0 port (QC3.0). This offers up a wide range of voltage and amperage: 3.6V-6.5V/3A, 6.5V-9V/2A, 9V-12V/1.5A in steps of 0.2V. This allows devices to be refuelled faster – up to four times faster according to Qualcomm – without running the risk of frying any components. Always a bonus.

This technology from Qualcomm requires a compatible device in order to work correctly. That means a smartphone powered by a mainstream or high-end Qualcomm processor in most cases. A QC 3.0 device will charge to 50% in about 30 minutes.

aukey pb-t11 power bank topThe second connector is rated at 5V/2.4A, which is pretty much the standard for standalone chargers.

Both ports support Aukey’s proprietary battery technologies (AiPower Adaptive Charging Technology and Aukey EntireProtect) which aim to charge devices faster and more safely.

Charging the PB-T11

Where this might charge your phone or tablet in quick time, charging the PB-T11 takes considerably longer.

Allow at least over night. You could be looking at a minimum of 12 hours using one port. You can half that if you use both the microUSB and the Lightning port.

Charging my devices

I have managed to charge my BlackBerry KeyONE and Nvidia Shield tablet a couple of times so far. The BlackBerry is also fitted with QC3.0 smarts so would get to 50% really quickly.

aukey pb-t11 power bank recharging blackberry keyoneFinally, Aukey says that you are able to fully charge your iPhone 7 ten times or a Nexus 6P five-and-a-half, or a 9.7-inch iPad Pro two-and-a-half times.

Aukey PB-T11 power bank review conclusion

It might be chunky but the PB-T11 delivers. If you are travelling long distance or going camping, this 30,000mAh power bank is just the job. On the subject of long-distance travel, it’s worth noting that the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) states that passengers may carry a power bank up to 100Wh in their carry-on luggage, which equates to 27,027mAh.

Being able to be charged by either Lightning or microUSB is a neat addition. The QC3.0 port will see life back in your compatible tech in no time.

I would’ve liked a USB-C in/out charge port but I believe that appears on another Aukey model.

It’s a good price, and appears rugged enough to put up with life in a bag too.
