Thinkware U1000 Dashcam review

Review of the Thinkware U1000 4K and 2K Dashcam Bundle

We have been testing out the latest U1000 4K dashcam from Thinkware, and we are mightily impressed.

While at IFA earlier this year we chatted to the folks at Thinkware and they were pretty proud of their U1000 dashcam. So much so, they got us excited enough to ask to test it out.

We fitted it to our imported Honda using the 12v power adapter and hit the road.

Thinkware U1000 dashcam bundle

Thinkware U1000 review

The Thinkware U1000 2-Channel bundle comes with both the front and rear cameras, a 12V power cable, an adhesive windshield mount, cable clips, a 32GB microSD Card and a USB microSD card reader.

You also get the Thinkware Hardwiring Kit and an Anti-Glare CPL Filter (which we didn’t fit for this review so we could see how the cam managed without).

Thinkware U1000 Design

The first thing we liked about this dashcam was its design.

Unlike the previous dashcams we have tested, the U1000 is built to look like part of your car’s original equipment, rather than a suction-cupped aftermarket add-on.

Thinkware U1000 review

Here you have camera lens built-in to a unit that affixes to your windscreen using 3M tape. The dashcam is pretty discreet and, sitting behind your rear-view mirror, less likely to distract you from the road.

Thinkware U1000 review

On the control panel, you have a trio of buttons for Power, WiFi, and Microphone. The three indicator lights show if the U1000 is connected to a WiFi hotspot, is recording, and connected to GPS.

Thinkware U1000 review

There is also an additional Recording button to trigger ad hoc capture.

Cameras

At the front of the unit is the front-facing camera that boasts an 8.42MP Sony Exmor R Starvis image sensor. You can thank this for the crystal clear 4K UHD video quality at 30FPS.

Additionally, the 150° wide-angle lens view minimises blind spots so you can capture every little detail out on the road.

Also, the U1000 features Advanced Wide Dynamic Range (WDR), Intelligent Automatic Exposure and Super Night Vision 2.0. So, no need to worry if things are being captured as bright and dark environments are covered.

The Thinkware U1000 also covers your… rear.

The company actually developed a new rear camera specifically for the U1000.

Thinkware U1000 review

The U1000 rear camera is equipped with a 5.14MP Sony Exmor R Starvis image sensor. That means that the back camera records in 2K QHD.

Just like the front cam, the rear also comes with a 156° wide-angle lens view and the advanced video enhancement technologies.

From what we can tell, this could well be one of the most potent rear cameras on the market.

Cloud Cam

As you can imagine, we love added tech, and the U1000 is connected to the Cloud. All you have to do is activate the hotspot on your phone and use the Thinkware Cloud app to connect the cam.

Thinkware U1000 review

As well as storing the captured videos in the Cloud, the front unit also has a microSD card slot. Ours came with a memory card; however, we had our mobile phone working as a hotspot all the time.

Although, if we had the cam hardwired to the car, the memory card would save video triggered by someone running into our car, etc. The U1000 supports microSD cards up to 128GB.

Thinkware Cloud App

With the app, you also get neat skills such as Geo-Fence, Locate Vehicle and Driving Impact Notification.

The app’s Live View function allows you to watch what is happening in real-time, as long as it’s connected to a hotspot or WiFi. The upshot is that you can monitor your vehicle using your smartphone, no matter where you are.

With Geo-Fencing, you can set up up to 20 different geographic zones, which will send a push notification through the app if the vehicle enters or leaves a pre-configured zone.

The Locate Vehicle function will let you discover the current location of the vehicle using the app.

In the event of an impact, such as a collision, while driving, a Driving Impact push notification will be sent through Thinkware Cloud as well.

In addition to the Driving and Parking Impact Notifications, the U1000 has several driver assistance systems that can deliver audible warning alerts. The alerts rely on the U1000’s built-in GPS, which can track the vehicle’s location, speed, and direction of travel.

The alerts include Fixed Speed Camera Warning, Mobile Speed Camera Zone Warning, Average Speed Zone Warning, and the likes.

Thinkware U1000 review

Of course, this is where you can access all your saved footage, too.

You can either see front and rear camera captures in separate areas or both captures listed together.

While in this area you can also delete or download selected captures. It’s all very intuitive.

Naturally, some of these skills require the cam to be hardwired and WiFi/hotspot connection.

Installation

As the hardwiring of the kit requires a professional, we settled for using the 12v cigarette lighter for power. This does mean that we lose so of the cam’s features, such as automatically recording parked impacts, etc.

Thinkware U1000 review

However, the rest of the installation was simple. If you are as fussy as us, there will be time taken about hiding cables in the roof liner, under carpets, and the like.

Thinkware does supply plenty of cable length, too. Granted, our little silver box on wheels isn’t the longest of vehicles, but we had plenty of lead to go from front to the rear cam, tracking the cable under carpets as we went.

Additionally, the cable seems to be of good quality as does the 3M tape pads used to secure the cams.

Thinkware U1000 review

It is then merely getting everything where you want it. For instance, we placed the front cam behind the rear-view mirror and the back cam just below the high-level brake light. The latter was difficult to photograph due to the heavily tinted privacy glass our ride has at the rear.

After that, download the Thinkware Cloud application and connect the front cam to your phone’s hotspot or your WiFi if it is in range. After spending time with the U1000, we are considering getting a Mi-Fi hub for the car or setting up an old phone as a hotspot to keep in the car.

Having the app also helps with positioning your cameras.

Thinkware U1000 Video Quality

I think we can all agree that this is the most crucial aspect. As you can see in the video, both front and rear cameras perform remarkably well.

We have to add here that we didn’t use the supplied filter either. That filter will reduce glare, but we wanted to see how the cam fared without.

We were really impressed by the recording quality – 4K Ultra HD y’all.

Even the rear camera outperformed some of the dashcams we’ve had through here.

The video shows the cam in glorious sunshine, good weather, rain and at night.

Downloading Clips

A quick note here, after our attempts at compiling the above video.

The Thinkware app appears to compress the video and then, should you download the videos and store them on Google Photos, they get compressed even further.

In short, if you want the full resolution, you are going to have to take the clips straight off the microSD card. But, make sure your video editor plays nice with HVEC – ours required a paid-for upgrade to accept the video taken off of the card.

Furthermore, it wasn’t until after all of that, we discovered that our editing software would only export at 1920×1080 at the most. So, sorry. No 4K video to be had in this clip, but at least you get full HD. You will have to take our word for it that the unadulterated quality you get from this cam is very good indeed.

Conclusion

The Thinkware U1000 is a fantastic bit of kit. We used the supplied cigarette lighter adapter for power so couldn’t test the added parked features.

Now we know just how could this dashcam is we are happy to see if we can buy it and get it professionally installed. We are really that impressed.

Granted, it isn’t cheap, but with the U1000 onboard, you can sit back and relax knowing that your ride is well-protected. Additionally, video from your drive is almost movie quality, so that’s pretty cool too.

Newquay to get Asgardia Spaceport

Some have been excited about the HS2 rail service; however, it’s Spaceport Cornwall that’s got our gadgety glands going.

Who here hasn’t dreamt of gallivanting into space? Well, what seemed like a distant dream and pure science fiction could soon become a reality.

Asgardia Spaceport Cornwall

With the opening of the Spaceport America in the Mojave Desert, New Mexico last week, Virgin Galactic will be bringing their interstellar enterprise to Spaceport Cornwall, based in Newquay.

Spaceport Cornwall

Thanks to the enterprising spirit of some of the world’s leading business moguls, Asgardia is seeking to boldly launch themselves to the forefront of space residency for a mass audience. A move that is proving to be the most transformative year in the 21st-century space race.

Asgardia is hoping to open the reality of space travel and residency to a far wider audience that is being offered by its competitors. With over a million followers and 300,000 signed up residents, the appetite for space residency is tangible.

Life in Space

With hugely exciting research into anti-gravity and protection from solar radiation, it is the ambition of Asgardia to facilitate for the first birth in space in the next 25 years. Once that achievement is accomplished, Asgardia will spear their research into creating a permanent home for humans in space.

Spaceport Cornwall

Dr Lena De Winne, Head of Information and Communications at Asgardia, told GadgetyNews:

Space residency must become a reality for human beings if there is any hope for the sustained longevity of the human race. We already have the technology to destroy the planet and life. The survival of the human race is too delicate to not have a vanguard in place that can secure our future. We also know that the lifespan of the sun is finite, meaning that humans one day will inevitably have to leave Earth in order to survive.

The current space race has been dominated by the billionaire moguls who are hoping to take the most wealthy and exclusive celebrities into space, but what Asgardia seeks to offer will appease all from society. Creating a new community that will not only be a vanguard of the human race but also protecting the Earth through our proposed defences against Near-Earth Objects, Asgardia will prove to be an ethical exponent of space exploration.

Once the prices become less eye-watering, we can see this being on our wishlist. How about you?

Lotus-Evija-Front-1

Lotus Electric Hypercar Announced

Lotus has just unveiled its new electric hypercar, the Evija – and it’s a bit of a looker.

British carmaker Lotus has just taken the wrappers of the first car fully developed since the company got bought by Chinese automotive group Geely and, to be frank, phwooooar!

Lotus Evija

Dubbed the Evija — pronounced “E-vi-ya” — this electric hypercar’s spec sheet implies that it’s more than an aerodynamic milk float. Furthermore, only 130 will be made once construction starts in 2020 and it will still rank as one of the fastest cars…. in the world.

Hypercar = Hypercash

Oh, and if you’re fancying one, get ready to put at least £1.5 million down as that’s the “starting price”.

For one-and-a-half-mill, you do get 1,972-horsepower generated by four electric motors, one at each wheel. Zero to sixty hits in under 3 seconds and the Lotus Evija will launch you to a top speed of over 200 miles per hour.

Lotus Evija

Those Top Trump specs can thank the fact that the car weighs just 1,680Kg. Lotus says it will be the “lightest production EV hypercar,” and that the Evija will also be the “most powerful series production road car” when it launches. Boast much?

Ever ready

Lotus Evija

Battery stamina will apparently be good for 250 miles of range, which is impressive considering the performance the company is touting. Additionally, if you use a 350kW charger, you can get 0-80% in just 12 minutes, with a full charge taking only 18 minutes. Naturally, Lotus is planning ahead, so when 800kW charging becomes available, the sportscar brand says a full charge will take just nine minutes.

But, enough of cold hard facts, just look at it! The Evija is every bit a 2020 hypercar. Yes, there is a touch of second-generation Tesla Roadster about it but, let’s face it, the original Tesla Roadster was based on a Lotus Elise.

Lotus Evija

Hyper tech

There are, of course, some nice touches. Firstly, the doors don’t have handles and can only be opened using a key fob or by a switch on the roof. The seats and the steering wheel are lined with Alcantara fabric. Also, the mirrors have been replaced by little cameras that jut out of the sides of the car. Best of all, though, frikken lasers! That’s what the headlights use to light up the road.

Lotus Evija

Naturally, the Evija is cloud-connected and can be updated over-the-air as well as record information about your track drives. Lotus is developing a companion app, but the car also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Lotus Evija

Geely, who bought a majority stake in Lotus in 2017, is no stranger to creating nippy electric cars as well as breathing fresh excitement into brands that were somewhat losing touch. The Chinese group now has Volvo under its umbrella and are also the reason why the Swedish auto cobbler has the neat Polestar offshoot.

We have high hopes for the much loved British sports car brand.

Hyundai Digital Car Key

Hyundai Wants Car Keys To Become History.

Fed up of losing your car keys? Do you share a car with other family members? Do you just want one less thing to carry? Well, car keys could become a thing of the past after a manufacturer developed an app to control a vehicle by mobile phone.

Hyundai Digital Key App

Hyundai has created the ‘Digital Key.’ The new app uses Near Field Communication to enable your phone and car to talk to each other. Using this app you are able to unlock your car and more.

Once the smartphone unlocks the vehicle, you start the engine pressing the Start/Stop button after placing your phone on the wireless charging pad in the centre console.

The app can be used by up to four authorised people who each can save their preferred driving settings.

Once the phone and car mate-up, the position of the mirrors, seats and steering wheel will adjust automatically depending on the user’s requirements.

Hyundai Digital Key

Additionally, through Bluetooth Low Energy communication, the Hyundai Digital Key can also lock and unlock the vehicle, activate the alarm and start the engine remotely.

Control Who, What and When

The level of access to different vehicle functions can be tailored to each user, for a defined period. I am assuming this could prevent your kids sneaking out in the car once you’ve called it a night.

Hyundai actually developed this technology with car-sharing schemes in mind. However, the press release says that “it could also be used to enable a courier to open the boot to deliver a parcel.”I’m not too keen but I can kinda see what they are getting at.

The Digital Key can be used to make peer-to-peer vehicle rental much easier. The Digital Key can be transferred via the smartphone app. That means no need for driver and owner to meet – similar to how Drive Now works, I guess.

The Digital Key will also have features such as an alert which can be triggered if the person renting the Hyundai exceeds the speed limit or drives outside an agreed area.

Hyundai Digital Car Key

Ho Yoo, group leader of Hyundai Motor Group’s Electronics Development Group, told GadgetyNews:

The Digital Key will benefit a very wide range of future Hyundai customers, as well as enabling innovative new schemes for vehicle sharing. We are studying other ways to harness this type of connected-car technology to greatly enhance the driving and ownership experience.

Hyundai has said it aims to gradually implement the technology in its new production cars.

Fingerprint Unlock Your Car

It follows the manufacturer’s development of smart fingerprint technology that allows drivers to unlock doors and start the vehicle.

To unlock the car, the driver places a finger on the sensor located on the door handle. The encrypted fingerprint information will be identified and delivered to the fingerprint controller inside the vehicle.

The chance of incorrectly recognising another person’s fingerprint is one in 50,000. That ratio makes it five times more effective than conventional vehicle keys, including smart keys.

Would you trust this tech? Are we still keen on keys? Let us know below.

Mio has announced its latest dash cam, the MiVue J60.

The MiVue J60 boasts a sleek design allowing the device to be discretely installed behind the rear view mirror. Not only does this look neater, but it also keeps your line of view clear through the windscreen. Despite its dimensions, it is not lacking in features.

The MiVue J60 provides full HD 1080p footage at 30 fps with 150-degrees wide-angle viewing and an F1.8 aperture.

Additionally, the J60 is packed full of safety features including Advanced Driving Assistance System [ADAS], Lane Departure Warning System [LDWS], Forward Collision Warning System [FCWS] and Fatigue Alert. That’s quite a list, but all of that tech should keep you safe as you drive.

As part of the ADAS, the MiVue J60 will give a sound alert if you start to drift away from the centre of a lane or should you pass the speed limit.

The device also comes with pre-installed safety camera data and free data updates for the lifetime of the dashcam. All handy to avoid those dreaded speeding fines.

Saigo has launched the world’s first sports utility bike (SUB). We are told that this is an entirely new category for ebikes.

The Saigo SUB is sturdy enough to be used off-road and, by combining a city-bike frame with the ruggedness of fat-bikes, it also offers a more comfortable all-around experience than a mountain bike.

The bike is aimed at those who want some pedal-assistance for commuting, running errands and weekend mountain biking trips. Additionally, you can head off the beaten track as this ebike can also handle off-road, including potholes, muddy roads and even sand.

Saigo SUB ebike

Saigo SUB ebike beach

Weighing in at just 77 lbs including those 26×4 inch tyres you can ride it as a standard pushbike using the 8-speed Shimano gears. Alternatively, you can take advantage of its powerful 500W electric motor and improved cruising range. The motor is built to be durable and efficient, yet silent with a full charging time of only five hours, or three using a quick charger.

Saigo SUB ebike tyres

Using the throttle, the in-built 48V10.4Ah battery (499.2WH) hands you a maximum range of 25 miles. However, the Torque Sensor System (TSS) feature releases additional power while pedalling to increase the maximum mileage by 30%. This is further than other ebikes can go in pedal mode.

Other features include USB connectivity to charge mobile devices, an integrated locking system that makes it easy to detach the battery for rapid charging. Furthermore, the unique OLED screen keeps you up to date on cycling data as well as providing cruise functionality.

Saigo SUB ebike line up

Saigo’s bike is equipped with an automated lighting system for ultimate road safety at night. Armed with both front and rear light sensors that incorporate a laser flashing light indicating a safe distance to ride. Also, there are turning signals, a set of two high-quality hydraulic disc brakes, and a comfortable suspension saddle.

Saigo SUB Soul App

Via the dedicated Saigo Soul iOS and Android apps you are able to monitor riding mileage, real-time power, and battery health. Through the app, you are also able to modify the parameters of your SUB including soft start level, torque working mode and throttle reaction time. An upgraded GPRS battery enables you to remotely monitor the location of your bike and easily find it, even when stolen.

Words

Ray Chow, Co-Founder of Saigo, told us:

We noticed a lifestyle trend – work and life are blending. We created the Saigo SUB line to bring the spirit of SUVs to cycling: convenient for everyday use, but rugged enough for play. We have combined state of the art technology with the latest features to create a stylish electric bicycle for off-roading or commuting to work.

Price and availability

The Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign launched on 10 October and has a target of $25,000 (which is just over £19,000) to put the ebike into mass production. It has an MSRP of $2,750, or £2,100.

Visit the Indiegogo campaign for further details on who this ebike is aimed at and what it can do: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/saigo-world-s-first-sport-utility-ebike#/

So, just open the MiVue app and access the Full HD 1080p event video for immediate viewing and sharing.

In the case of an accident or even just a ding in the carpark, the 3-Axis G Sensor will detect any sudden change of motion and the footage is automatically stored. Better still, that footage cannot be overwritten, so can accessed easily if needed as evidence.

GPS

The MiVue 7 Series range of dash cams has the added security of built in GPS which tracks a vehicle’s location and speed. The GPS module is housed inside the unit so there are no external devices needed. The GPS feature also includes speed alerts and speed camera locations.

More safety features

All the cameras in the range also boast additional safety features. You will be notified for head-light reminding, shock and motion sensing and fatigue alert.

Imaging

mivue 786The MiVue 766, 785, 786 and 788 dash cams feature Sony’s high quality CMOS sensor with near-infrared sensitivity. This allows for enhanced night-time video capture. The MiVue 792 also features a high quality STARVIS sensor that excels in capturing images in low light environments.

The 7 Series dash cams allows for a wide angled viewing range of either 130° or 140°, dependent upon the model. This, combined with the high quality sensors, ensures registration plates and small details are captured throughout the whole journey, day or night.

All the Mio MiVue 7 series devices are compatible with the MiVue A30 rear camera. The A30 also packs Sony’s low-light sensitivity CMOS sensor, full HD 1080p, all-glass lens.

chrisChris is being called the “Alexa for cars” and claims to be the world’s first digital assistant for drivers.

Chris enables drivers to receive and reply to texts and WhatsApp messages, listen to music from their phone, follow navigation instructions, and make and receive phone calls using an intelligent speech and hand gesture recognition technology on a glanceable full-colour screen display.

If this sounds a little familiar, I reported about the Garmin Speak last year, but I believe it never reached these shores.

Besides, Chris looks sleeker than the Garmin and appears to be gesture driven as well as touch. Moreover, this assistant has been designed especially for drivers.

Chris – Alexa for cars

chris speech recognitionChris offers entertainment, connectivity, and navigation capabilities for drivers. Simply attach Chris to your windscreen or dashboard and connect it with your smartphone via Bluetooth. Additionally, Chris plays nice with both iOS and Android.

The device enables drivers to receive and reply to texts and WhatsApp messages, listen to music, and follow navigation instructions. Naturally, it also allows for making and receiving phone calls.

All of this is achieved using intelligent speech and hand gesture recognition technology on a glanceable full-colour screen display.

Furthermore, unlike other emerging voice assistants, Chris is specifically designed for drivers.

That means it offers a more human-centric user experience that proactively communicates with the driver. It even works offline when there is no mobile signal.

If a WhatsApp or text message comes in Chris will read it out, listen to your reply and send it accordingly. No more secretive typing at traffic lights or peeks at the phone.

The unit is powered by advanced Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing technologies that make you feel like you’re driving with a human co-driver, delivering information to you when you need it most.

Background

New, harsher laws were introduced on March 1st.  In a recent survey conducted by the RAC 89% of the 1,727 drivers asked said they were aware of the law change, more than a quarter (26%) of those who knew of the tougher penalties admitted to regularly using their devices behind the wheel.

If these results were duplicated across the 40 million UK drivers, it could mean at least 9.2 million motorists are habitually breaking the law.

Holger G. Weiss, CEO of German Autolabs, told us

In this age of digital dependency, despite the harsh penalties and safety risks they face, a significant number of drivers persist in using mobile phones when driving. Chris offers drivers a safe, legal, hands free alternative. Through  the  combination  of  voice,  hand  gestures  and  the  display,  it  is  easy  to  use  and reliably  does  what  you  want  it  to  do.  Chris  makes  your  drive  smarter  and  safer  by  keeping  your  hands  on  the  wheel  and  your  eyes  on  the  road.”

Price and availability

German Autolabs will be launching Chris at IFA Berlin 2018 (August 30th – September 5th). It will have an RRP of £299.

tfl fender guitarThe London Tube map has been immortalised on a new special edition Stratocaster guitar through a partnership between Fender and London Underground.

The Tube map is an iconic symbol London. Designed by Harry Beck in the 1930’s, as well helping people navigate the capital, it has become an emblem of British culture. Furthermore, it was recently voted one of the top transport ‘Design Icons’ of all time. This makes it a perfect partner for another design classic – the Fender Stratocaster.
