DJI Mavic Air – newest compact drone leaked
DJI is all set to reveal its latest compact, foldable drone tomorrow. However, someone has beaten them to the line and has shown the world their DJI Mavic Air.
Yup, spoilers. But, DJI’s newest drone, purportedly called the “Mavic Air,” looks like a cross between DJI’s ultra compact and foldable Mavic Pro and the even tinier, gesture-controlled Spark.
So, with that lineage, you just know it’s going to be brilliant. Furthermore, it should prove to be a huge seller too!

Drone fan site DroneDJ has shared plenty of details about the new Mavic Air. You know what, if everything they’ve said is true, then you can add a Mavic Air to my shopping list. This drone looks ace.

The leaked deets include the new drone having four foldable legs, just like the Mavic Pro. Although, its body styling looks more like the Spark.
Up front you’ll find what could be a 32-megapixel camera with three-way gimbal. This will undoubtably be capable of recording in 4K. That puts it back to Mavic Pro skills as the Spark has to be happy with 1080p.

Being from DJI, we can expect a whole slew of clever obstacle-avoidance sensors located on the back, front and bottom of the drone.
Clever tech
The new drone will also reportedly come with a Visual Positioning System (VPS) for better flying indoors.

VPS, as Google has demonstrated, uses machine learning, computer vision, and mapping coordinates to determine when something or someone is indoors. It’s essentially the indoor version of GPS. Very cool.
However, what might be more important and impressive, for that matter, is flight time. Apparently, the Mavic Air can stay airborn for up to 21 minutes. Again, stats that equal the Mavic Pro. The Spark, in comparison, can only keep it up for 16-minutes.
There’s no hints regarding a controller, not even if it comes bundled with one or not.
Chances are DJI will sell a separate bundle with one though, it’s what they do. But, from what I can tell, it’s controlled entirely with gestures or a phone app.
Price and availability
Naturally, DJI remain tight-lipped about this. However, DroneDJ says it could retail for $699.
