R-KAID-R is possibly the ultimate portable arcade gamer
No matter how slick home consoles or gaming tablets get you can’t beat the look and feel of a real, full-sized, cabinet arcade game – the thing is that they’re not what you’d call portable. Until now.
This awesome, almost steam-punk, creation is called the R-KAID-R and should sate most of your arcade wants, right down to it being available in a variety of retro wooden finishes.
The R-KAID-R console packs in an 8-inch, 4:3, 800 x 600 resolution display and the familiar old-school controller and button layout in to an exquisite hand-crafted box.
The portable arcade supports games from the likes of MAME, Neo Geo, PC Engine / Turbo Grafx 16, Playstation 1, Atari 2600, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, ScummVM, Doom and the forever popular Duke Nukem 3D.
Together with offering the ability to add new game files instantly via a USB connection. Its creator, Swedish designer and craftsman Love Hultén, explains:
The R-Kaid-R is an exclusive toy for the dedicated gamer. It’s a creative link between the present and the past. It’s a game jewel to possess. When not in use, the machine is folded into a protective vessel, surrounded with elements of mystique and curiosity. A processed gemstone is sparkling inside, waiting to be revealed. Protected by a tailored shoulder bag made from leather, R-Kaid-R is no doubt the ultimate portable arcade setup.
The R-KAID-R portable arcade isn’t cheap and is priced at €2,499 but for more information and to make an order, check out the Love Hulten website.
